When American Matt Stopera’s iPhone went missing, he thought, “Well, bad luck. These things happen.” One year later, Matt’s misfortune has turned to good fortune as he found a new friend and became an Internet celebrity in China.
You may already be familiar with this story since it spread on Weibo for weeks during the Spring Festival, but it started when Matt began seeing photos of a Chinese man in front of an orange tree on his photo stream (照片流). He wrote about it and some Chinese readers decided to see if they could find the mysterious man. They did. It turns out that “Brother Orange,” as he became known, owned a restaurant in Guangdong and the iPhone he was using, a gift from a nephew, was Matt’s old phone.
Matt and Brother Orange began messaging each other and a friendship blossomed with Matt invited to China to feast at Brother Orange’s restaurant on his delicious Hakkacuisine (客家菜). Matt was also overwhelmed by the warmth of the millions of Chinese who were following the story. When he opened a Weibo account he had 22 million followers almost overnight, many of them inviting him to their hometowns and offering to be his tour guide.
Matt’s story is another example of how powerful the Internet and social networking has become in bringing people together. But there is a darker side to this story and that involves how Matt’s missing iPhone turned up in China. Over three million smart-phones were stolen in America last year. Because of identification numbers, these phones can’t be used in America, so they are sent to other countries and many of them end up in China, where they can be re-activated. This is why Matt and Brother Orange could share the same iCloud account.
You should keep this in mind when buying a second-hand phone and check the serial number to see that it has not been stolen. Finding a friend through social networking is wonderful, but using a stolen phone isn’t really the best way to make the connection.
    4. What happened to Matt one year after he lost his phone?
    A. He was fortunate enough to get his phone back.
    B. He became a famous figure on American website.
    C. He gained friendship and became popular in China.
    D. He lost another phone because of his iCloud account.
    5. How did Matt and Brother Orange establish their friendship?
    A. Brother Orange’s photo was found on the Internet.
    B. Chinese readers tried their best to find Brother Orange.
    C. Brother Orange received an iPhone from his nephew.
    D. Brother Orange contacted Matt and invited him to China.
    6. How did Matt’s followers react to his Weibo?
    A. cautiously B. enthusiastically C. anxiously D. humorously
    7. What does the story indicate?
    A. It’s wonderful to find a friend through social net-working.
    B. A stolen phone is the best way to make connections.
    C. People should be careful when buying a second-hand phone.
    D. Matt and Brother Orange set a good example to us.
C 5. D 6. B 7. C

At Jenner Park primary School in Wales, pupils between the ages of seven and nine are writing letters to residents of a local care home. The initiative sees children and their elderly pen pals(笔友) exchange updates about their lives, helping to build relationships between generations while also giving the children an understanding of the value of writing letters by hand—an activity that's becoming less and less common.
Laura Johnson, the teacher who coordinates(协调) the scheme at Jenner Park, says: "All of our writing is for a purpose. That's the key in getting children to value handwriting. "As soon as you put an audience there, knowing that someone out there is going to be reading it—whether that's parents or another group of children—there's always the real sense of pride to go along with it," says Johnson.
The school maintains a focus on handwriting throughout the years, from dedicated handwriting classes in the prep school to a calligraphy club offered to the older groups. It has created something called the pen license. It allows younger children to move from using a pencil to pen once they've reached a certain standard. "There's a lot of excitement about reaching that pen licence stage," says Johnson.
Johnson adds that developing students' writing in this way matters for their life after school: "For us, it's important that we create citizens of the future who have a set of life skills that can make them successful." The dominance of technology is a challenge, she admits, but she also believes both tools have their place. "Obviously we're competing with technology continuously." she says." And I know there are people there saying you don't need to bother about handwriting because tech is out there. But we don't see it as competing. We're trying to get pupils to realize that there's a place for handwriting and to know when it's important to use each."
    8. Why does the school launch the initiative?
    A. To help children to find the meaning of handwriting.
    B. To encourage children to show pity for the aged.
    C. To persuade children to choose proper courses.
    D. To urge children to acknowledge the audience.
    9. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the school?
    A. Its after-class activities. B. Its practice in handwriting.
    C. Its academic achievements. D. Its innovation in technology.
    10. What can we infer from the last paragraph about handwriting?
    A. It will win against technology. B. It will give way to technology.
    C. It will co-exist with technology. D. It will cause confusion to people.
    11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Handwriting promotes the pen pal scheme
    B. Slow communication reduces misunderstanding
    C. Creative ideas for dealing with challenges gain popularity
    D. Putting pen to paper contributes to a love of the written word
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第一段“The initiative sees children and their elderly pen pals(笔友)exchange updates about their lives, helping to build relationships between generations while also giving the children an understanding of the value of writing letters by hand—an activity that's becoming less and less common.”(这项倡议看到了孩子们和他们的老笔友交流关于他们生活的最新信息,帮助建立代际关系,同时也让孩子们了解手写信件的价值——这种活动越来越不常见了。)以及第二段“All of our writing is for a purpose. That's the key in getting children to value handwriting.”(我们所有的写作都是有目的的。 故选A项。
根据第三段“The school maintains a focus on handwriting throughout the years, from dedicated handwriting classes in the prep school to a calligraphy club offered to the older groups. It has created something called the pen license. It allows younger children to move from using a pencil to pen once they've reached a certain standard.”(学校多年来一直专注于书法,从预备学校专门的书法课程到为老年群体提供的书法俱乐部。
根据最后一段“The dominance of technology is a challenge, she admits, but she also believes both tools have their place." Obviously we're competing with technology continuously. (她承认,技术的主导地位是一个挑战,但她也认为这两种工具都有自己的位置。“显然,我们在不断与技术竞争)”可推知,手写将与技术共存。故选C项。

Batman may not have any superpowers, but his inspiration certainly does.
More than 1,400 bat species live around the world, except in Antarctica and a few remote islands. Over their 50 million years of evolution, bats have developed clever solutions to life’s challenges, from a built-in sonar (声呐) system for finding food to fast, flexible wings that produce the fastest level-flight speed of any animal on Earth.
“There is still a lot to learn, but it is clear that bats really do have superpowers,” says Rodrigo Medellín, an ecologist. “Bats are showing us how to live a better life, for instance, by serving as models for healthy living and long lives.”
As a general rule in biology, smaller animals have shorter lives than larger ones. But bats are rule breakers: they’re the longest-lived mammals (哺乳动物) relative to their body size. Recently, scientists looked inside bats’ cells for the secrets to their exceptionally long lives. They focused on telomeres (端粒), which are the protective structures found at the ends of chromosomes (染色体). In most animals, telomeres tend to get shorter with age. But the telomeres of the longest-lived group of bats, Myotis, do not appear to shrink (收缩) with age. Understanding why bats live so long may help humans live longer one day.
In addition to living longer, bats remain healthy throughout their lives, with very low risk of developing cancer. Furthermore, bats can carry deadly viruses without getting sick. So further research into their unique immune (免疫的) systems may actually give insight into how people can live with viruses and not get sick.
Beyond their own abilities, bats also support many other parts of their ecosystems. Three out of every four bat species eat insects. Many are pests that cause damage to important agricultural crops, such as cotton. Scientists estimate that insect-eating bats may save U.S. farmers about 1 billion per year. In addition, many bat species help improve plant health and diversity.
“Bats are unsung heroes of biodiversity,” says Medellín. “It’s about time we appreciated them.”
    12. What can be learned about bats from the text?
    A. They fly the fastest of all land animals.
    B. They are at low risk of falling sick with a virus.
    C. They live mainly on the islands of Antarctica.
    D. They are the longest-lived animals given their size.
    13. What did scientists recently find?
    A. Animals’ telomeres rarely shrink with age.
    B. Myotis’s telomeres do not shorten as they age.
    C. Smaller animals usually live shorter lives than larger ones.
    D. More research into bat telomeres could help people live more healthily.
    14. What is the author’s intention in writing the last paragraph but one?
    A. To show what bats feed on.
    B. To call on people to protect bats.
    C. To explain how bats benefit the farmers.
    D. To highlight the importance of bats to the ecosystem.
    15. What would be a suitable title for this text?
    A. Bats Offer Clues to Treating Diseases
    B. How Bats Deal with Life’s Challenges
    C. Scientists Unlock the Secrets to Long Lives
    D. Why Bats Are Superheroes of the Animal World
B 13. B 14. D 15. D
根据倒数第三段“Furthermore, bats can carry deadly viruses without getting sick.So further research into their unique immune(免疫的) systems may actually give insight into how people can live with viruses and not get sick. (此外,蝙蝠可以携带致命病毒而不会生病。因此,对它们独特的免疫系统的进一步研究可能会让我们深入了解人类如何与病毒共存而不生病)”可知,蝙蝠有独特的免疫系统,虽然携带致命病毒但不会生病。因此,从课文中了解到关于蝙蝠的是B项“They are at low risk of falling sick with a virus.(它们感染病毒的风险很低)”符合题意,故选B项。
根据第四段“But the telomeres of the longest-lived group of bats, Myotis, do not appear to shrink (收缩) with age.(但寿命最长的蝙蝠Myotis的端粒似乎不会随着年龄的增长而收缩)”可知,Myotis的端粒似乎不会随着年龄的增长而收缩。
根据倒数第二段“Beyond their own abilities, bats also support many other parts of their ecosystems…In addition, many bat species help improve plant health and diversity.( 除了自身能力之外,蝙蝠还支持其生态系统的许多其他部分……此外,许多蝙蝠物种有助于改善植物健康和多样性)”和最后一段““Bats are unsung heroes of biodiversity,” says Medellín. “It’s about time we appreciated them.”(“蝙蝠是生物多样性的无名英雄,”麦德林说,“现在是我们欣赏它们的时候了。”)”可知,蝙蝠对生态系统非常重要,因此,作者写最后一段的意图是D项“To highlight the importance of bats to the ecosystem. (强调蝙蝠对生态系统的重要性)”符合题意,故选D项。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据倒数第二段“Beyond their own abilities, bats also support many other parts of their ecosystems…In addition, many bat species help improve plant health and diversity.( 除了自身能力之外,蝙蝠还支持其生态系统的许多其他部分…… 因此,这篇文章的合适标题是D项“Why Bats Are Superheroes of the Animal World(为什么蝙蝠是动物世界的超级英雄)”符合题意,故选D项。

They’d been planning this forever. From her birth, most likely. Mya's mother, Helena loved hosting parties. And Aunt Beatrice loved birthdays. Together, they'd make her Sweet Sixteen a hundred times bigger, bolder, and brighter than it needed to be. They selected a theme every year and stuck to it. Her fourteenth had been the “Snow White” and her ninth had been the “Frozen”. They never told her what the theme was the day before. She'd just wake up her birthday morning, a brand new birthday outfit (一套服装) laid neatly on her dresser (an outfit related to the theme, of course) and she would open her door to see the adventure that lay ahead of her that day.
Mya had a few guesses as to what this year’s theme would be. A play on the words “Sweet Sixteen” was likely — a candy themed party, perhaps? But she’d had a baking party a few years ago — and Helena was anything but repetitive. Mya didn't have any interest in cars, so she doubted a sports-car party was on the menu. She’d tried to look through her mother’s purchase history online, but her mother had been careful enough to delete everything recent. So the only clue left was the birthday outfit she would receive the next morning.
May 1st, Mya woke. The bright sunlight begged her eyes to open and she loved the day that her birthday took place. It was always nice out on May 1st and it never rained. This morning was no different than her previous birthdays. She sat up in her bed and looked to her dresser before slipping out of bed and inspecting the outfit. She unfolded it and held it against her body, seeing how it was like. It reached down, just above the ankle. Mya dressed, eyed herself in the mirror and found it was not so much a pretty outfit as she had received before. It was totally one for blue-collar workers!
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a knock.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With everything done, her face shone with a sweet smile.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a knock. Helena walked in. “What is my birthday theme this year, mum?” Mya asked. “Labor!” Helena answered in a firm voice. “But I was expecting a party!” her voice sounded shaky. Oh, how could she forget she was born on Labor’s Day! Mya’s feet brought her small steps to follow Helena to the van. On arriving at a farm, she noticed the vast land of wheat spreading over the horizon that made a splendid view itself. Their job was to remove the weeds.
With everything done, her face shone with a sweet smile. Several drops of sweat traced a path on her red and pink cheeks and she turned to Helena: “this is not bad, mum and I feel I’ve grown up enough to help you with something.” Helena pulled Mya into her arms and planted a big kiss on her forehead. The sun in May was shining brighter than ever like a fire ball. Picturing the good harvest of this year, they hit the road with a happy birthday song echoing in the van.
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a knock. “Is the birthday girl up?” Helena asked. Mya opened her bedroom door and surprisingly found they looked the same! Looking at Mya’s surprised face, Helena grinned and led her to the kitchen. There was no meal on the table. “Let’s prepare for the party together this time.” Aunt Beatrice said gladly dressed in the same outfit. It suddenly occurred to Mya that the theme this year was supposed to be “Sweet Labor, Sweet Sixteen”.
With everything done, her face shone with a sweet smile. Looking around the living room, Mya felt the happiness brought by labor the first time. “Happy Birthday!” Mya turned around in surprise. All of her friends jumped out of any hiding spots with everyone wearing the same outfit. They enjoyed the party and cleaned up together afterwards. Tired as Mya was, she pulled Helena and Beatrice into a hug tightly, saying “this is the best sweet sixteen ever.”
