For high school seniors who are admitted to multiple colleges, deciding which one to attend often requires additional research and careful consideration. The traditional decision day of May I is approaching, though some colleges have pushed that date back as campuses shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic As deadlines approach, here are some ways that parents can help, starting with their role in the decision process.
Choosing a college is an exciting but stressful process for many tens. Parents should try to be understanding instead of adding more stress. Getting into a good college isn’t about impressing the neighbors. Although it may be easier said than done, parents shouldn’t compare their ten’s college acceptances or rejections with those of their friends’ children, says Christopher Rim, founder and CEO of Command Education. Doing so just adds more stress to the college decision process, he says. “Not comparing is obviously the advice that I give,” Rim says. “Every student is without doubt so special, so unique and has different passions and interests.”
Teens have probably already spent some time looking into the academic offerings of each college they applied to, but experts say it doesn’t hurt for families to do some additional research before making a final college choice. Parents can help their teens research and think through the width and depth of academic opportunities offered at a college, Christine Chu, a premier college admissions counselor at IvyWise, a New York-based education consulting company, wrote in an email. This includes the majors and minors (副修科目) provided, course selections, accessibility of faculty, undergraduate research opportunities and study abroad programs, she said.
Anyway, if parents really want the students to have buy-in into their choice, it needs to be their choice.
4. What can we know about the traditional decision day?
A. It has been postponed owing to the pandemic.
B. It is set for parents to choose a college for their teens.
C. It has been cancelled because few students care about it.
D. It is set for students to decide which college to attend on their own.
5. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A. The reputation of a college counts among neighbors.
B. The choice of a college has something to do with neighbors.
C. Choosing a college actually concerns nobody but the student only.
D. Neighbors will applaud a student if he or she is admitted into a good university.
6. What does Christine Chu suggest in Paragraph 3?
A. Considering courses offered first.
B. Taking research chances into account.
C Reflecting on employment opportunities.
D. Thinking carefully about the future career.
7. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To inform students of how to apply for a college.
B. To stress the importance of making the right choice.
C. To urge students to make college decisions cautiously.
D. To suggest what parents can do in helping their teens select a college.
A 5. C 6. B 7. D
根据第一段“The traditional decision day of May I is approaching, though some colleges have pushed that date back as campuses shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠疫情). (传统的择校日5月1日即将到来,但由于新冠肺炎疫情导致校园停课,一些大学将择校日期推迟了。)”可知,传统的择校日由于疫情而推迟了。故选A。

根据第三段“Parents can help their teens research and think through the width and depth of academic opportunities offered at a college, Christine Chu, a premier college admissions counselor at IvyWise, a New York-based education consulting company, wrote in an email. This includes the majors and minors (副修科目) provided, course selections, accessibility of faculty, undergraduate research opportunities and study abroad programs, she said.(纽约教育咨询公司IvyWise的首席大学招生顾问Christine Chu在一封电子邮件中写道,父母可以帮助孩子研究和思考大学提供的学术机会的广度和深度。她说,这包括提供的专业副修科目、课程选择、师资力量、本科生研究机会和海外学习项目。)”可推断,她建议要考虑大学是否提供研究的机会。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“As deadlines approach, here are some ways that parents can help, starting with their role in the decision process. (随着最后期限的临近,这里有一些父母可以帮孩子的方法,从他们在决策过程中的角色开始。)”可推断,作者给高三学子的父母一些帮助孩子选择合适大学的建议。故选D。

Bees play an essential role in the ecosystem. They not only collect nectar (花蜜) to make honey but also help with pollinating (授粉) your plants. Sadly, bees are slowly becoming an endangered species on earth, with their numbers dwindling significantly. You, however, can help increase the populations of bees, too.
While bees may be attracted to flowers in your garden, using chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides can adversely impact a bee colony (群). Unknown to many, most of these pesticides will affect or kill both good and harmful insects. In addition, bees might not know if you have already used such chemicals on your plants.
Bees are always on the hunt for good nectar; hence they won’t pass a good opportunity. In addition to practicing organic farming, introducing plants that bees find naturally attractive, such as catmint and scabious, can help attract them to your garden. The bees will thus feed on both their favorites and other flowers in the garden, too. Moreover, bees tend to fly over long distances, searching for nectar, a new hive, or even a favorite flower during summer and in spring. Long flights can be particularly exhausting and famishing. According to Bee Conservation Trust, giving the bees a drink will go a long way in saving the colony. The trust recommends mixing equal volumes of water and white sugar, then place the mixture in an open bowl, upturned bottle caps, or a bird drinker.
Beekeeping is such an honorable job, with many people taking it up as a hobby and at last a full-time job. One of the benefits of this hobby is that you get your own freshly produced honey, free from nasty chemicals. Almost everyone can become a beekeeper. All you need is a little training from the local beekeeping associations for tips on how to do it safely.
8. What does the underlined word “dwindling” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Keeping stable. B. Setting down.
C. Changing quickly. D. Becoming less.
9 Why is a mixture of water and white sugar given to bees during their long flights?
A. To help bees find gardens.
B. To help rescue the bees.
C. To help bees search for nectar.
D. To help ease the dryness of bees.
10. Which word best describes beekeeping as a job?
A. Boring. B. Dangerous. C. Rewarding. D. Well-paid.
11. What can we know from the text?
A. Plants like catmint and scabious have no appeal to bees.
B. Using pesticides can have a negative effect on a bee colony.
C. Bees are becoming endangered mainly because of nectar shortage.
D. Bees fly over long distances just to pollinate their favorite flowers.
D 9. B 10. C 11. B

根据第三段中“Long flights can be particularly exhausting and famishing. According to Bee Conservation Trust, giving the bees a drink will go a long way in saving the colony. The trust recommends mixing equal volumes of water and white sugar, then place the mixture in an open bowl, upturned bottle caps, or a bird drinker.(长途飞行特别让人精疲力尽,饥肠辘辘。根据蜜蜂保护基金会的说法,给蜜蜂喝饮料对拯救蜂群大有帮助。该信托机构建议将等量的水和白糖混合,然后将混合物放入一个打开的碗、倒置的瓶盖或鸟饮器中)”可知,在蜜蜂的长途飞行中,给它们喝水和白糖的混合物是为了拯救长途奔波的蜂群。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Beekeeping is such an honorable job, with many people taking it up as a hobby and at last a full-time job. One of the benefits of this hobby is that you get your own freshly produced honey, free from nasty chemicals. (养蜂是一项光荣的工作,许多人最初把它作为一种爱好,最后却成为一份全职工作。这个爱好的好处之一是你可以得到自己新鲜生产的蜂蜜,不含有害的化学物质)”可推知,养蜂是一份有意义、有回报的工作。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“While bees may be attracted to flowers in your garden, using chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides can adversely impact a bee colony (群). Unknown to many, most of these pesticides will affect or kill both good and harmful insects.(虽然蜜蜂可能会被你花园里的花朵吸引,但使用除草剂和杀虫剂等化学物质会对蜂群产生不利影响。许多人不知道,这些农药大多会影响或杀死有益昆虫和有害昆虫)”可知,使用杀虫剂会对蜂群产生不利影响。故选B项。

After orbiting the earth for six months, the three crew members of China’s Shenzhou XIII mission departed from the Tiangong space station and returned to the mother planet on Saturday morning.
Major General Zhai Zhigang, who was the mission commander, and his crewmates spent 183 days in an orbit about 400 kilometers above the earth since their Shenzhou XIII spacecraft was launched on Oct 16 by a Long March 2F carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. They were the second inhabitants of China’s permanent space station named Tiangong. More importantly, the crew has set a new record for China’s longest spaceflight, almost doubling the previous record of 92 days created by their peers in the Shenzhou XII mission who travelled with Tiangong from mid-June to mid. September last year.
During the Shenzhou XIII mission, the astronauts carried out two spacewalks that totaled more than 12 hours. They went up components on the station’s robotic arm and used it to practice extravehicular (舱外的) maneuvers, checked the arm’s capabilities and its compatibility with the crew’s needs, examined the safety and performance of support devices for extravehicular activity and also tested the functions of their extravehicular suits. The crew members also carried out two science lectures for Chinese students. In those lectures, which were livestreamed worldwide by China Media Group, the astronauts showed viewers how they live and work inside the huge space station and showed physical phenomena only possible in microgravity such as “disappearing buoyancy” and a “water ball”. In one experiment, Wang used a Bing Dwen Dwen toy to display how objects fly in weightless environment.
The Shenzhou XIII’s space-based lessons marked the start of the Tiangong Class series, China’s first extraterrestrial (地球外的) lecture series that aims to popularize space science and inspire youngsters to pursue their “science and space dreams”.
12. In what way does the Shenzhou XIII mission achieve a record-breaking performance?
A. The duration of spaceflight.
B. The value of the mission.
C. The way of orbiting the earth.
D. The importance of the space station.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The space life of the astronauts.
B. The theme of the science lectures.
C. The specific tasks of the taikonauts.
D. The efforts astronauts have made.
14. What does the educational value of Shenzhou XIII’s lessons lie in?
A. To show more details about space life.
B. To encourage more people to be astronauts.
C. To promote the development of China’s space program.
D. To motivate the younger generation to explore space science.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Science Lectures by Shenzhou XIII Crew Members
B. China’s Space Exploration Sets an Example for the Globe

You have worked hard, suffered years of sacrifice to achieve your dream, and you can finally sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labors. ____16____ Let’s examine 3 possible reasons why you are not happy and suggest some solutions which perhaps guide you towards happiness.
Being given a false image of happiness.
We all have our own view of happiness. We know what will make us happy. ____17____ We have been seduced into thinking that material gains are all that makes happiness. Feeling envious.
____18____ When you see someone with a better car, a better house, or even a more attractive partner, it is easy to feel you have failed if you don’t have the same. Envy will never bring you happiness. Envy just feeds into your negative view of life.
____19____
If you fail to find happiness as you follow your road to success, it will be due to your inner felling of inadequacy (不足). When you reach one goal and do not feel happy, you are going to convince yourself that that goal was not a proper goal, or not a big enough goal, and you must reach the next goal before finding happiness. ____20____
What should you do to get happiness back? Rid yourself of the burdens from the past and replace bad memories with positive thoughts and actions. Adopt an optimistic, joyful approach to life, and take care to avoid negativity.
A. Never being satisfied.
B Always trusting yourself.
C. Yet happiness still escapes from you.

上文“We know what will make us happy. (我们知道什么会让我们幸福。)”指出我们都知道幸福是什么,下文“We have been seduced into thinking that material gains are all that makes happiness. Perhaps it’s having a big, expensive cars, and a bank account with lots of money.(我们被诱惑,认为物质利益是快乐的全部。
可知,本段主要围绕妒忌来展开,下文“When you see someone with a better car, a better house, or even a more attractive partner, it is easy to feel you have failed if you don’t have the same.(当你看到有人拥有更好的汽车、更好的房子、甚至更有吸引力的伴侣时,如果你没有同样的东西,你很容易就会觉得自己失败了。)”
此空是本段小标题,即介绍你不快乐的一个原因,根据本段内容“If you fail to find happiness as you follow your road to success, it will be due to your inner felling of inadequacy (不足). When you reach one goal and do not feel happy, you are going to convince yourself that that goal was not a proper goal, or not a big enough goal, and you must reach the next goal before finding happiness.(如果你在通往成功的道路上找不到幸福,那是因为你内心的不足。当你达到一个目标却感到不快乐时,你会说服自己那个目标不是一个合适的目标,或者那个目标不够大,你必须在找到快乐之前达到下一个目标。)”可知,本段主要介绍因为你不快乐是因为你总是感觉不到满足,所以A项“Never being satisfied.(永不满足)”概括本段内容,故选A。
【20题详解】
上文“When you reach one goal and do not feel happy, you are going to convince yourself that that goal was not a proper goal, or not a big enough goal, and you must reach the next goal before finding happiness. (当你达到一个目标却感到不快乐时,你会说服自己那个目标不是一个合适的目标,或者那个目标不够大,你必须在找到快乐之前达到下一个目标。)”具体介绍了你不满足会导致你不开心的过程,空处应该承接上文,对上文做出总结,说明这么作的后果。F项“This process will just continue, leaving you unhappy.(这个过程会继续下去,让你不开心)”符合,故选F。

Dear Mike,
I am writing to tell you something about the square dance in China. In the morning or after dinner, people, especially elderly women, will gather in squares to dance to popular music. More and more young people are also joining in now.
There are many reasons behind its popularity. First of all, China has made great progress in its social and economic development in the past decades, and people have more time and energy to enjoy themselves. Besides, doing the square dance is a good way for people to keep fit.
However, just as each coin has two sides, this kind of dance has also led to some problems. For example, dancers play loud music and occupy lots of public places, which annoy many other people. Maybe square dancers need to make some changes.
Yours,
Li Hua
