Whenever my nine-year-old daughter approached me, eyes wide, with a note book and a pen, telling
me she wanted to engage in a game of school, something inside me froze. There was a mental block so huge that it felt like I was being asked by Elon Musk to make a presentation about artificial intelligence. So, nine times out of ten,I made an excuse.
Why is it so hard to play with my child? I realize this is because I have no idea how to play. I have
many happy memories of my youth, but absolutely none involves playing dolls or building blocks with my parents. I don't blame them because they were never played with as children either. When I ask them what their own childhoods were like, my dad tells me a story about being locked in a cupboard, while my mum recalls the box of buttons she was told to amuse herself with.
There are studies showing how important play is for a child's growth and no end of people
campaigning for our young to get more of it at school. The poet Michael Rosen, in his Book of Play, argues play is not an extra and all of us, whatever age, could do with more silliness in our lives.
As Rosen explains, “The need for adults to be productive members of society means we end up
thinking of things that make us laugh,or which are fun to do, as not being very significant or having very little value.” This is exactly why we need to play more. It lightens the load of life and allows us to get back to a childlike state of wonder.
Play is vital to health. And it is why I've started playing school games with my daughter. I managed an
entire hour and a half the other day---and afterwards, I felt happy. A good 20 years younger.
24.How did the author use to respond to her daughter's request for a game?
A. She pretended to be surprised. B. She apologized for being busy.
C.She chose to avoid involvement. D. She turned to artificial intelligence.
25.What does the author focus on while giving an explanation in Paragraph 2?
A. The game category. B. Memory strategies. C. The generation gap. D. Childhood experiences 26.Which of the following would Rosen probably agree with?
第 3 页 共 8 页
A. Laughter is the best medicine. B. Play is not only intended for children.
C.Thinking like a kid free people of stress. D. Staying curious makes a productive worker.
27.What does the author want to convey in the text?
A.Children grow up well in a fun environment.
B.Family interaction strengthens the parent-child tie
C.Parents owe it to their children to play more with them.
D.Playing dolls and building blocks are happy memories for children.

Scientists today are concerned about the growing number of species in the world that may soon become extinct. The United Nations, along with many governments, are trying to save these endangered species. To help resolve this issue, scientists have been trying to learn why species become endangered.
In the United States, loss of habitats is the main reason for species becoming endangered. As
populations grow and cities or towns expand, nature is destroyed and the ecosystem is affected. Even small changes in one part of an ecosystem can have a big impact on another part of it. For example, deforestation may result in a change in ground temperature, which may kill off a certain kind of plant in the forest. Animals that eat this plant may suddenly find that there is no available food so they starve to death.
Another possible cause of endangered or extinct species is climate change and rising sea levels. As the
Earth gets warmer, this has profound effects on animal and plant life everywhere. For example, rising sea levels make coastal areas unfit for birds to live in.Warmer temperatures melt the ice where polar bears live,
wrecking their habitat and making it harder for them to find food. The rising seas also make it harder for
polar bears to swim from the cold waters to frozen packs of ice so many of them drown.
There are several ways that people are trying to help endangered species recover. Ecologists study different species and try to find out more information about them and help. In Finland, for example, scientists found that a decrease in the number of bogs(沼泽)was responsible for the falling butterfly
population. Once they understood this, they could manage the butterfly population and help it recover. Governments are also passing laws to protect endangered animals. One example of this is an area near Hawaii with a seriously low fish population. The United States government has made it illegal for fishing boats to enter this area.
28. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. Most endangered species are located in the United States.
B.Cities and towns in the United States are growing too fast.
C. Ecosystem changes can result in habitat loss and animal death.
D. More trees need to be planted to prevent animals from dying out.
29.What does the underlined word “wrecking”in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Conserving. B. Damaging. C. Providing. D. Dominating.
30.Which is the best title for this text?
A.Saving Endangered Species B.A List of Endangered Species
C. The Causes of Global Warming D. How Polar Bear Became Extinct
31.What will the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Some other ways to help endangered species recover.
B.A brief discussion of polar bears and their diet habits.
C. The impact of fishing laws on the development of Hawaii.
D. Various opinions and debates concerning the cause of global warming. 第 4 页 共 8 页

For generations, depression has been seen as an illness, disorder or even weakness. Such an idea makes sense because depression causes suffering and even death. But what if we've got it all wrong?
The common wisdom is that depression starts in the mind with abnormal thinking. That leads to
symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, or tiredness. Now, models like the Polyvagal Theory suggest that we’ve got it backward. It’s the body that detects danger and initiates a defense strategy meant to help us survive. That biological strategy is called immobilization, and it demonstrates in the mind and the body with a set of symptoms we call depression.
When we think of depression as unnecessary suffering, we are telling people with depression that they
are not part of the group, they are not right and they don’t belong. That robs them of hope. But when we begin to understand that depression, at least initially, happens for a good reason we lift the shame. Instead, people with depression are courageous survivors, not damaged sick people.
The autonomic nervous system(ANS) is constantly scanning our internal and external environment for
signs of danger. If our ANS detects a threat or even a simple lack of safety, its next strategy is the fight or flight response, which we often feel as anxiety. Sometimes the threat is so bad or goes on for so long, that the nervous system decides there is no way to fight or to flee. At that point, there is only one option left: immobilization.
The immobilization response is the original biological defense in higher animals. It dulls pain and
makes us feel disconnected. Think of some reptiles(爬行动物),which shut down their bodies to avoid cold temperatures and the lack of food and water. In humans, people often describe feeling “out of their bodies” during extremely unpleasant events which has a defensive effect of reducing the emotional shock. This is important because some things are so terrible, we don’t want people to be fully present when they happen. What incredible capacity of our biology to find a way in hard times!
32.Why does the author mention the Polyvagal Theory?
A. To offer a standard for identifying depression.
B. To raise people's awareness of mental problems.
C. To make sense of how depression affects people.
D. To correct a commonly held idea about depression.
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Depression can bring people in crisis hope.
B. People may feel it wrong to have depression.
C. Depression is an unnecessary human emotion.
D. People often feel proud of fighting depression.
34.What is “immobilization” in the text?
A. Building up anxiety. B. Rising to challenges.
C. Shutting down action. D. Pulling through a crisis.
35.In which order does our body react to an extremely unpleasant situation?
①seek to work out solutions ②become aware of a threat
③experience emotional shock ④start defensive disconnection
A.②③④① B.④②①③ C.②①③④ D.④①②③

Rafael is my parents' friend who owns a bakery with the yummiest (最美味的) treats imaginable. He happened to stop by when my friends Mareya and Daniel, my little sister Indi and I were drawing with chalk in front of my house. He said our drawings were cool, while trying not to step on them as he walked toward the door to find my dad. We expressed our thanks and continued to draw.
A little while later, when he came back out with my dad, Rafael said he had been thinking about our
wonderful drawings, and that he'd really love our help. He was going to sell cookies, and the profits would
go to an organization that worked to save the rain-forests. When asked if he wanted us to help taste the cookies, Rafael laughed and said “Of course”. But he said he also needed some artwork for the bags. He
wondered if we would be up for making some sketches (草图) on paper that he could consider for the label.
We said yes right away. I mean, who wouldn't want to help the rain-forests — and sample some of Rafael's
delicious cookies? Rafael had to leave for a meeting but promised to be back by four o'clock. “Don't worry about making the pictures perfect,” he said as he left. “Just have fun drawing.”
After we read a little bit about the rain-forests, my mom helped get us set up with art supplies and
background music. And away we drew! Finally, about five minutes before four o'clock, we decided to stop and look at one another's work. To our great surprise, Daniel made an incredible drawing. When asked why
he never told us he could draw like that, Daniel just smiled. He said he was glad we liked it and that he
thought all of ours were really awesome too.
