A one-hour special event was held online to mark the 12th United Nations “Chinese Language Day” on Tuesday. People around the world were invited to express their interest and love for the Chinese language and culture through short videos.
Chinese has a long history, which has influenced other languages in Asia, just like the way Latin has influenced languages in the West. With this history, will Chinese have a surprising future?
At present, over one billion people speak Chinese in the world ——far more than any other language’s speakers. It is the language of the country which is the world’s second largest economy (经济体). Chinese people are found studying and doing business all over the world.
In fact, Chinese is certainly going to be a world language. Why is this certain? We must look at the economic and political power of China, which is increasing every day. As we all know, world languages have always been the languages of countries with powerful economies. So we believe that the world language will include Chinese someday.
Foreign interest in Chinese has developed very quickly together with the development of the Chinese economy. Chinese has become one of the most important and popular languages around the world.

When you wave to a friend, you are using body language. When you smile at someone you mean to be friendly. When you put one finger in front of your mouth, you mean “be quiet.”
Yet, people in different countries may use different body languages.
Once an Englishman was in Italy. He could speak little Italian. One day he felt hungry and went into a restaurant. When the waiter came, the Englishman opened his mouth, put his fingers into it and took them out again and moved his lips. In this way, he meant to say, “Bring me something to eat.” But the waiter brought him a lot of things to drink, but no food.
The Englishman was sorry that he was not able to tell the waiter he was hungry. He was ready to leave the restaurant when another man came in. The man put his hands on his stomach, and this body language was good enough for the waiter. In a few minutes, the waiter brought him a large plate of bread and meat.
Finally the Englishman had his meal in the same way.

Different gestures (手势) mean different things in different countries. Sometimes a gesture that is polite in one country is not polite in another and should not be used. Different meanings of gestures can also cause problems in understanding what another person is trying to say. A gesture that many people do not understand is one that uses the thumb. Most westerners will sometimes show that they like something by holding out a closed hand with the thumb lifting in the air. This is called give someone or something “the thumbs up". Often, only one thumb is used, so it should be “the thumb up”.
The usual explanation (解释) for the origin of this gesture is not really correct. It says that in ancient Roman times, when people were pleased with the way a gladiator (角斗士) had fought, they showed their thumbs up. When they were not pleased, they gave the thumbs down. When a gladiator was given the thumbs up, the emperor allowed him to live. When a gladiator was given the thumbs down, the emperor ordered him to be killed.
The truth is, however, it was translated into a wrong meaning by mistake. If people wanted to save the gladiator they put out their hands and hid their thumbs in their hands. If they wanted the gladiator to die, they pointed their thumbs straight at him.
41.Westerners lift their thumbs when they ___________.
A.want someone to die B.like something
C.want to go to a playground D.want someone to live
42.Most people think that in ancient Rome, “thumbs up” meant that __________.

C.the fighting could continue D.the people were not pleased
43.In fact, if people wanted a gladiator to live, they __________.
A.hid their thumbs B.pointed their thumbs down
C.lifted their thumbs up D.pointed their thumbs at him
44.From the article we know that ___________.
A.different gestures have different meanings in different countries
B.a friendly gesture is always the same in different countries
C.the meaning of “thumbs up” is the same both now and the past
D.we should often use the thumbs
45.The main idea of this article is about ___________.
A.gestures around the world B.closed thumbs
C.gladiators D.the thumbs up gesture

Getting English Language Learners to Put Down the Books and Have Some Fun Even if there’s so much about English that can be learned from a book or even in a traditional classroom setting, a lot of the language can still be learned best in more relaxing situations where students are having fun. Here are some suggestions.
★ Communicate with strangers. If you live in an area filled with English speakers, get students out of the classroom. 1 Students may not speak to strangers, but they’ll hear conversations taking place and may begin to understand how the words learnt in the classroom are actually used in everyday speech.
★Let their guard down. One difficult thing for learners is confidence(自信)when they speak English. Fun activities, especially those outside of the classroom, give students a chance to feel relaxed. 2 It may take a bit of time at the beginning, but once students get into it, they’ll start to get confidence.
★ Make use of English media(媒体). Most recorded language instruction is pretty boring and it can get tiring hearing the same voice repeat the same phrases. 3 They will hear common expressions and more everyday conversations in the movie. If they’re not sure about something they hear, it can turn into a more formal lesson once back in the classroom.
★ 4 Casual(随意的)conversations give learners the chance to hear or use English in situations. They can talk all they want about expressions to use while dining out or informal words to use with friends, but it takes a trip to McDonald’s or a picnic in the park for many of those expressions to truly set in.
A.You can let students go to a movie in English.
B.Put them among other English speakers.
C.They may hate to speak English.
D.Hear or use English in situations.
E. They will speak more freely.
