Jhn Frederick Kensett was brn n March 22, 1816 in Cheshire, Cnnecticut. He attended schl at Cheshire Academy, and studied carving with his immigrant father, Thmas Kensett, and later with his uncle. He wrked as a carver in the New Haven area until abut 1838, after which he went t wrk as a banknte (纸币) carver in New Yrk City. He didn't knw his carving experience wuld benefit him later, which wuld make him well prepared fr his fllwing career. In 1840, Kensett traveled t Eurpe in rder t study painting. He sketched (画素描) and painted thrughut Eurpe, imprving his talents.
During this perid, Kensett develped an affectin fr the 17h-century Dutch landscape painting. He returned t the United States in 1847.
After establishing his studi and settling in New Yrk, Kensett traveled extensively thrughut the Nrtheast and the Clrad Rckies as well as making several trips back t Eurpe.
Kensett is best knwn fr his landscape f New Yrk and New England and seascapes (海景画) f castal New Jersey, Lng Island and New England. He is mst clsely assciated with the S- called “secnd generatin” f the Hudsn River Schl. In 1851 Kensett painted a mnumental canvas (巨幅油画) f Munt Washingtn that has becme a sign f White Muntain art.
Kensett's style evlved gradually, frm the traditinal Hudsn River Schl manner in the 1850s int the mre imprved Luminist style in his later years. By the early 1870s Kensett was spending much time at his hme n Cntentment Island, n Lng Island Sund near Darien, Cnnecticut.
It was during this time that Kensett painted sme f his finest wrks. Many f these were seascapes, the majr example being Eatn s Neck, Lng lsland (1872) nw in the cllectin f the Metrplitan Museum f Art in New Yrk.
The artist was widely praised and financially successful during his lifetime. In turn, he was generus in supprt f the arts and artists. He was a full member f the Natinal Academy f Design, the funder and president f the Artist' Fund Sciety, and a funder f the Metrplitan Museum f Art. On December 14, 1872, Kensett died f heart failure at his New Yrk studi.
