Housemates make posters to lighten the mood amid the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. Posters featuring a character that resembles the Disney robot Baymax have been making rounds on the internet and drawing praise from netizens for lightening the mood amid the epidemic.
Made by Chen Mengying, 32, and her American housemate Stacey Klinge, 33, the posters also feature humorous phrases related to lockdown life. The duo (搭档), who live in Tianyuan housing community, say they came up with the poster after realizing how tense the mood in their community had become as it faced lockdown challenges. According to Chen and Klinge, their community, which has been under closed-loop (闭环) management since April 1, has had problems getting access to daily essentials, and this sparked several disagreements between residents and the management. Eager to help lighten the mood, the two sought to spread some cheer using their artistic skills.
Klinge says she was initially confused with her housemate’s suggestion to create a character based on dabai, a Chinese reference to pandemic workers in white protective suits. Chen says she was thinking about Baymax from the animated film Big Hero 6. Seeing how Baymax and the workers both play the role of protectors in their respective worlds, the two decided to use the character for their posters. Their posters, which contain multilingual updates about the latest pandemic measures and announcements for residents, have helped people develop a sense of optimism.
The posters have also drawn the attention of several local media outlets, which have interviewed the two. “I was seriously considering a return to the United States. But I’ve changed my mind after my fantastic experience in the community,” says Klinge. Besides creating the posters, Chen and Klinge have also been volunteering in the community since April 16 and they always focus on positive things at this difficult time.

Do you think robots could pass an eighth-grade test? Guess what they can!
The artificial (人工的) intelligence (AI) system Aristo recently passed the same eighth-grade science test that some US students take, The New York Times reported. Aristo correctly answered 90 percent of the questions on the test. This is an example of the progress that is being made in AI development. Four years ago, 700 computer scientists tried to develop AI systems that could pass these kinds of exams. None scored higher than 60 percent.
Scientists at the Allen Institute in the US developed the system. Aristo was able to pass the exam because it can not only understand language, but also use logical (逻辑的) thinking to solve difficult problems. For example, it can understand what a forest fire is and how it could affect animals.
The system used BERT, a kind of neural (神经的) network technology developed by Google, to answer the questions. BERT has “read” thousands of articles and can understand English. If it looks at a sentence with a missing word, it can correctly guess what the word is. With BERT’s help, Aristo “read” many multiple-choice (多选的) questions. Over time, it was able to find logical patterns.
Aristo’s success means that we might see new AI-based products, such as search engines and data bases for hospitals. AI systems might be able to better understand users in the future.

Space is dangerous. But human innovation has allowed people to explore this deadly environment for decades. Within the protection of a space station, astronauts have enough air, food and water to complete missions of a year or longer. But missions to further reaches of space are a different matter. Establishing a base on the moon or sending humans to Mars seems just on the horizon. That can only happen if innovative and safe ways are developed.
One company, Interstellar Labs, believes they have created a system that can solve the food problem. They have developed an advanced system that can grow plants anywhere, even in space. They call their artificial intelligence (AI) managed greenhouses BioPods, and they are designed to be very efficient. In fact, Interstellar Labs claims that BioPods reduce the amount of land and water needed to produce food by 99 percent. That is not an impossible claim. BioPods don’t use any soil to grow plants, and the vast majority of water is recycled.
Plants are grown inside BioPods using aeroponics, the practice of hanging plants in the air and spraying a mist of nutrient-rich water on their roots. According to Interstellar Labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water.
The conditions inside of a BioPod are controlled by AI, which can change anything from the lighting to the temperature and humidity. This improves growing conditions no matter what the environment is, including the emptiness of space.
The BioPods can be built in almost any environment. The pod’s structure is made with a 3D printer using raw materials in liquid form. This means that a BioPod could be built right on the surface of the moon or Mars, making transporting a large structure unnecessary.
9.Which word can replace the underlined phrase “on the horizon” in paragraph 1?
    A.Strange. B.Doubtful. C.Easy D.Approaching.
10.What can we learn about a BioPod?

11.What is an advantage of BioPod-grown plants?
A.They make the most of soil. B.They don’t need any nutrients.
C.They are of higher production. D.They aren’t strict about conditions.
12.What is the text mainly about?
A.The application of AI in agriculture. B.Human’s efforts in space exploration.
C.The methods of improving food output. D.Growing food in space pods to feed astronauts.

Livestreaming (直 播 ) through platforms such as Amazon Live and TikTok is an increasingly popular way to sell goods online. It usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, and someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by just clicking on a link.
We analyzed ( 分析 ) 99,451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases. In terms of time, that is equal to over 2 million 30-second television advertisements.
To determine the emotional ( 情绪的 ) expression of the salesperson, we used two deep learning models: a face model and an emotion model. The face model discovers the presence or absence of a face in a frame of a video stream. The emotion model then determines the probability that a face is exhibiting any of the six basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear or disgust. For example, smiling signals a high probability of happiness, while an off-putting expression usually points toward anger.
We wanted to see the effect of emotions expressed at different times in the sales cases so we counted probabilities for each emotion for all 62 million frames in our database. We then combined these probabilities with other possible aspects that might drive sales — such as price and product characteristics — to judge the effect of emotion.
We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople show more negative emotions — such as anger and disgust — the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople show high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise.
A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer’s expense.
13.What does Paragraph 1 tell about livestreaming sales?
A.It increases the prices of products.
B.It helps sellers save money on ad.
C.It makes shopping convenient for buyers.
    D.It promotes better buyer-seller relationship.

Located in the picturesque Goulburn Valley in country Victoria is the Kialla Central Primary School, attended by just 77 students, four teachers and one excellent principal (校长). After experiencing epidemic lockdown period (疫情封闭期) that forced them into remote learning for months, the boys and girls of Kialla have just one message — THANK YOU!
“We never expected such a wonderful outpouring of thanks,” principal Debbie Humphries tells Woman’s Day from the school’s playground where the students have gathered to praisethe devoted (有献身精神的) staff who supported them during these recent tough times.
“Spending time with these amazing children, we found one unique quality really shines through their exceptional kindness. From Foundation One through to Year 6, all 77 come together as one, each adding their little bit of magic to the mix,” says Debbie, 52. “Our school motto, ‘A small school doing big school things!’, summarized what we aim to do every day—to go beyond the normal course of duty, to schedule their education according to their individual strengths, and weaknesses, and give them a chance to shine and be their best.”

Stuck inside his room at an assisted living center, Bob Coleman knew he could not go out in public with the epidemic (疫). But he was not cut off from outside: he shared his love for country music over the Internet. “Hello, everybody. It’s a bright day in Tennessee,” he said into his microphone. “This is Bob Coleman, coming to you from Room3325…”.   Then Coleman began to play the music he loves-hits from country music stars. The 88-year-old carefully chooses each song.
Coleman and several other retirees have turned into DJs (流行音乐播音员), for a new online radio hour known as “Radio Recliner.” A marketing company called Luckie came up with the idea of Radio Recliner. Listeners can send song requests in honor of family or friends. For example, listeners might hear a message like this: “Hey, Granny. This is your favorite granddaughter Amy. We just wanted to call in and say we love you.” The 60-minute show started with retirees in middle Tennessee. It has since expanded, with residents of assisted-living centers in other states taking part in the project. Many jumped at the chance to work as a DJ to ease the loneliness of social distancing rules.
Mitch Bennett serves as Luckie’s chief creative officer. He says the idea was to provide a sense of community to older people. “For this generation, radio was the original social media,” Bennett said, “Dedicating a song to someone you love and having them hear it along with everyone else is a special way of connecting.”
In Georgia, 80-year-old Ed Rosenblatt, who had made full preparations for his show, said an hour he spent playing songs on Radio Recliner resulted in a flood of text messages, emails and calls from family and friends, and many of the messages were from people he had not heard from for years.

On Monday, December 5, online retailing (零售) giant Amazon announced the opening of its first physical store. Called Amazon Go, the Seattle-based store that is currently being tested by company employees, learns from regular grocery stores except for one thing — “Just Walk Out” technology. All purchases are handled electronically, which means there are no cashiers, checkouts or lines. Shoppers simply take what they need and leave.
To shop at Amazon Go, customers need to open an Amazon account and download the store’s App onto their smartphones. Upon entering the store, they scan a QR code (二维码) with their phones and begin shopping. Every item picked up gets added to the bill automatically. If the customer changes his/her mind, all he/she has to do is return the purchase back on the shelf, and it will be removed from the final bill. Once the customer leaves the store, the amount spent is automatically taken out from the Amazon account and a digital receipt is generated to remind the shopper of the trade.
To provide busy customers a pleasant shopping experience, Amazon, which has been working on this concept for four years, plans to keep the store size at a “comfortable” 1,800 square feet. In addition to typical grocery products like bread and milk, the store will stock ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch and dinner options, made by on-site chefs. There will also be chef-designed Amazon Meal boxes for those who prefer to cook the food at home.
After years of joint efforts by Amazon staff, Amazon Go finally opened in 2021. Amazon will not provide any insight into the cutting-edge “Just Walk Out” technology. The company website states, “The checkout-free shopping experience is enabled by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning.”

If job seekers knew companies were using AI to fill open positions, would it stop them from applying for the job? The answer, according to a recent study, is yes — sometimes.
The researchers found that in certain instances, like the screening (筛选) of applications, participants usually accepted some degree of automation. But in other instances, like interviews, automation could stop job seekers from applying for a position.
Companies facing recent labor shortages are increasingly turning to AI as a way to facilitate and speed up the hiring process. AI can be used in tasks such as screening job candidates, checking professional licenses, and interviewing candidates.
The new research suggests that using AI in hiring could be quite opposite. For instance, in one part of the study, participants were shown fictional job postings and then asked if they intended to apply for the position. The researchers found that if the job posting said that AI was used both to screen applicants and to conduct interviews, participants’ intention to apply for the position averaged 2.77 on a six-point scale. If AI was used only for the screening process, participants’ intention to apply averaged 3.73.
In another experiment, the researchers also found that study participants saw pros and cons in the use of AI in interviewing. When told the hiring would be fully automated, some participants expected the whole hiring process to be more consistent (始终如一的) in its judgments. But others tended to believe that they had less voice in the final outcome. Overall, the study results suggest this concern tends to outweigh the appreciation of AI’s lack of bias (偏见) at the interviewing stage.
A mixed approach may be a way to get the best of both worlds. Participants may have been more open to automation earlier in the hiring process because they could see some benefits from using AI — such as less-biased decisions. But during the later stages applicants expect personal interaction, to give them an opportunity to sell themselves and to learn more about the company.
29.Why do companies increasingly turn to AI in hiring?
A.To attract more applicants. B.To boost hiring process.
C.To pick out top candidates. D.To solve labor shortages.
30.In which part do participants prefer automation?
    A.Screening job candidates. B.Interviewing candidates.
C.Grading professional licenses. D.Predicting final outcomes.
31.What does the underlined part refer to in Paragraph 5?
A.Less AI involvement. B.Lack of consistent judgments.
C.Less-biased decisions. D.Lack of personal interaction.
32.What’s the main idea of the text?
    A.Hi-tech is a two-edged sword.
B.AI finds its way to hiring process.
    C.Automation may discourage job seekers.
D.A mixed approach should be adopted in hiring.

Salar de Uyuni is a world-famous area of Bolivia. The extremely dry land is flat and white and covered with salt from the earth, which makes many visitors go to the special place each year.
A young boy is having fun by taking unusual pictures of all the visitors, with a little help from a toy dinosaur. Eleven-year old Piter Condori takes photos of visitors standing on the salt flats and places the small dinosaur in a part of the frame. He does it in a way that makes it look as if the toy were running toward the people. Piter charges the tourists a little bit of money for each photo. At the end of each day, he takes home about $15 to help his family pay for food or to help his brothers and sisters buy toys. Food prices have shot up recently, making it harder for Piter’s family to buy everything it needs.
Piter’s father, Diego, works in the salt business. “We didn’t even have enough money to eat, so we have devoted ourselves to working in tourism as a family,” Diego said, stressing that it was hard for his business during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also said his family had a small amount of money saved which nearly ran out during the last two years. At the moment, Piter’s mother sells hand-made art to the salt flat’s visitors and his brothers and sisters help, too.
The Condori family is the same as many others in Bolivia. The South American nation depends strongly on tourism. One Bolivian tourism organization said visitors have decreased by 90 percent. The 2, 000 people who work in tourism have asked the government to remove some COVID-19 related restrictions.

D.A suggestion on taking attractive photos.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people in lockdown felt lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic,” said John Dattilo, a professor at Pennsylvania State University.
Together with an international team of researchers, Dattilo studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic. According to their new study, reducing loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration and skill. “When people are absorbed in what they are doing, they enter a state called FLOW,” Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex computer program but your skill level is low, then you’re likely to feel stressed instead of achieving flow. On the contrary, if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and flow will not appear, either. If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed and focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.” However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“Loneliness is very connected to our health,” Dattilo explained. “Psychological, emotional, and cognitive health are all challenged when people are lonely. Loneliness is associated with depression and other mental health challenges. People tend to thrive on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”
37.What is the purpose of the research?
A.To study how to reduce loneliness. B.To fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
C.To treat some mental illnesses. D.To help people live a normal life.
38.What is a key point of the state of flow?
    A.Enjoyment. B.Relaxation. C.Concentration. D.Loneliness.
39.Which of the following can help a student get into a state of flow?
    A.Doing housework. B.Chatting online.
    C.Watching television. D.Composing a story.
40.What do the underlined words “thrive on” mean in the last paragraph?
    A.Enjoy. B.Grow. C.Avoid. D.Balance.

根据第一段最后一句“That can only happen if innovative and safe ways are developed.”(只有开发出创新和安全的方法,才能做到这一点。)
根据第二段中“They have developed an advanced system that can grow plants anywhere, even in space. They call their artificial intelligence (AI) managed greenhouses BioPods, and they are designed to be very efficient. ”(他们已经开发出一种先进的系统,可以在任何地方种植植物,甚至在太空中。他们把自己的人工智能(AI)管理的温室称为“BioPods”,而且设计得非常高效。)可知,BioPods是新研发的一种先进的温室系统。故选B。
11.细节理解题。根据第三段中“According to Interstellar Labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water.”(根据星际实验室的数据,BioPod种植的植物比传统种植的植物多产300倍,只需要少量的水。)
But human innovation has allowed people to explore this deadly environment for decades. Within the protection of a space station, astronauts have enough air, food and water to complete missions of a year or longer. ”(太空很危险。但是人类的创新已经让人们探索这个致命的环境几十年了。在空间站的保护下,宇航员有足够的空气、食物和水来完成一年或更长时间的任务。)提到了人类在探索太空中,空间站可以为宇航员的生存提供根本的保障。第二段中“One company, Interstellar Labs, believes they have created a system that can solve the food problem. ”(一家名为星际实验室的公司相信他们已经创建了一个系统来解决食物问题。他们已经开发出一种先进的系统,可以在任何地方种植植物,甚至在太空中。他们把自己的人工智能(AI)管理的温室称为“ BioPods”,而且设计得非常高效。事实上,星际实验室声称BioPods可以将生产食物所需的土地和水资源减少99% 。)讲述了一家名为星际实验室的公司研发了一个先进的温室系统 BioPods,这个系统的优越性是可以将生产食物所需的土地和水资源减少99%);第三段中“According to Interstellar Labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water.”(根据星际实验室的数据,BioPod种植的植物比传统种植的植物多产300倍,只需要少量的水。)

根据文章第一段“It usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, and someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by just clicking on a link.(它通常持续5到10分钟,有人会宣传产品。
根据文章最后一段“A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller.(根据我们的研究,一个可能的解释是,微笑可能令人厌恶,因为它缺乏真实的感情,会降低对卖家的信任)”可推知,顾客对销售者的微笑感觉是他们感觉被骗了。故选C项。

根据第2题的分析可知,学校拥有敬业的员工和个性化的课程,学生对学校表示感谢,再根据第四段的“Annika, who is honored to captain the school with her good mate Harry, is convinced Miss H and the Kialla staff are real-life angels, without the wings! (安妮卡,很荣幸地与她的好伙伴哈利作为校队长,她相信哈利和基拉中心小学的工作人员是没有翅膀的真实天使!)”可知,基拉中心小学的工作人员得到了高度的评价,因此学校的教育对孩子们的生活和学习产生了很大的影响。故选C。

Many jumped at the chance to work as a DJ to ease the loneliness of social distancing rules.(自那时以来,该项目已经扩大,其他州的辅助生活中心的居民也参与了该项目。许多人抓住了做DJ的机会,以缓解社交距离规则带来的孤独感)”以及倒数第二段的“He says the idea was to provide a sense of community to older people. 故选A。
It’s a bright day in Tennessee,” he said into his microphone.(“大家好,今天是田纳西州的晴天,”他对着麦克风说)”推知,这些老人是乐观的;根据最后一段的“In Georgia, 80-year-old Ed Rosenblatt, who had made full preparations for his show, said an hour he spent playing songs on Radio Recliner resulted in a flood of text messages, emails and calls from family and friends, and many of the messages were from people he had not heard from for years.(在佐治亚州,80岁的艾德·罗森布拉特为他的节目做了充分的准备。

根据第二段“To shop at Amazon Go, customers need to open an Amazon account and download the store’s App onto their smartphones. C项“How to shop at Amazon Go. (如何在Amazon Go里购物。)”能概括本段大意。故选C。
27.推理判断题。根据第三段第一句中的“To provide busy customers a pleasant shopping experience, Amazon, which has been working on this concept for four years, plans to keep the store size at a “comfortable” 1,800 square feet.

If job seekers knew companies were using AI to fill open positions, would it stop them from applying for the job?
