James Brown was ten years old when his parents sent him to school. It was not far from his home, so they sent him by himself.
But, instead of going to school, he was in the habit of playing truant (逃学). He would go into the fields, or spend his time with idle (无所事事的) boys. And when he went home, he would tell his mother that he had been to school, and had said his lessons very well.
One fine morning, his mother told James to return home at once after school, then she would take him to his aunt’s. But, instead of minding her, he went off to the water. There he met plenty of idle boys. Some of these boys found that James had money, and he was led by them to hire (租) a boat, and to go with them upon the water.

When we refer to cultural differences, negative ideas like “conflicts” (冲突) or “divides” may come to our minds. Yet the young generation in the 2022 Winter Olympics is taking the lead in bridging the gap to improve global communication.
Trying a different country’s cuisines (菜肴) is a challenge for some people. But many international athletes in the Games chose to embrace (欣然接受) the differences.
Malta’s snowboarder Jenise Spiteri is an example. The 29-year-old ate a lot of Chinese snacks in the Olympic village and said the doubao (red bean bun) was her favorite. Spiteri packed a few in her jacket pocket before the women’s halfpipe competition. As she waited for her score, Spiteri took a big bite with a huge smile on her face. After this, Chinese internet users called her “Doubao Sister”. Meanwhile, she also shared the food on her social media accounts. More Maltese people have come to know the Chinese snack because of her.
The Games also saw young people help and appreciate (欣赏) others, whatever their cultural background is.
Alexandra Pozhidaeva from Russia was a performer in the opening ceremony. The 23-year-old said what impressed her most is the friendliness from the Chinese people. She recalled that when she and her teammates felt cold during the rehearsal (演习), some Chinese students from other programs gave their gloves to them even though they didn’t know each other. “At that moment, I was touched and understood the togetherness of the Olympic spirit,” said Pozhidaeva. The feeling was also repeated by 22-year-old student Zeng Kailai. When he worked as a volunteer for the Games, he received many emblems as gifts from athletes to share their appreciation for his work.

After the 2022 Spring Festival Gala, dance-poem drama Thousands of Miles of Mountains and Rivers became widely known. The drama is based on the 900-year-old Chinese painting Thousands of Miles of Mountains and Rivers. Created by Song Dynasty (960-1279) painter Wang Ximeng at 18, the painting is “amazing in its large scale (尺寸), rich coloration and the expressive details”, reported CCTV. It shows a Chinese blue-green scenery.
To show the Chinese traditional aesthetics (美学) of the painting, the dance performance regarded dancers as the mountains which are one of elements (元素) in the panting. They each had a different hairstyle, which liked a mountain rock. The clothes they wore were shades of green and blue, which is also a poetic explanation of the mountains and rivers.
When the dancers swayed elegantly, audiences seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers.

In February, the Ministry of Education announced that mobile phones should, in principle (原则上), be banned in primary and secondary schools. Now, Gao Xiaojun is interviewing some students. Let’s listen to their ideas.
Xu Xiaohe
Using phones often is a distraction (干扰) from our study. Even adults can’t control themselves, let alone kids like us. In fact, my school has never allowed us to bring our mobile phones. It aims to protect our eyesight, make sure we focus on our work and prevent us from becoming addicted (上瘾的) to the Internet and online games.
Li Zihan
I feel differently. I believe that a mobile phone ban is too simplistic for a generation (一代人) that has grown up with mobile phones. Students should be taught self-management skills, as well as learn how to use our phones effectively to help with our studies. This might be the best way to deal with technology in modern times.
Ge Ziqi
Today, phones are used everywhere, from taking a bus to buying food. If I can’t take my phone with me, I’ll have to buy my own bicycle. Because I need to use a bike-sharing app every day to travel between my home and school. So I think the problem with banning phones has more to do with life outside of school.

Happy Rain on a Spring Night
Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens each thing.
O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads;
In boat a lantern looms.
Dawn sees saturated reds;
The town’s heavy with blooms.

When Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu (712-770) wrote this poem, he was living in Chengdu. Sometimes he went to farm in the field. The poem shows his care for farmers.
The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good indeed, as it “knows” the proper time to come. Here the poet uses personification(拟人), as if the rain were smart enough to know that it should come in time for the farmer’s busy plowing (农耕) season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night without making any noise. Unlike the thunder (雷) and lightning of summer storms, the quiet spring rain makes its contributions without seeking (寻求) to be known.
In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy, indicating (暗示) that there will be enough rain during the night. Then the poet imagines: tomorrow morning, all of the flowers in the city will bloom (盛开) after the rain.

Poverty (贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty. Instead of just giving money to poor people, it has tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Ordinary people play a big role in the fight. Here are two of them.

After traveling more than seven months in space, Tianwen 1 is one step closer to Mars! Tianwen 1, China’s first Mars probe, successfully entered Mars orbit (轨道) in February, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA). It will stay in orbit for about three months before landing on the red planet.
A small step on the red planet will be a big step for human beings. Humans have launched 46 Mars exploration missions since October 1960, but only 19 of them have been successful, according to China Daily. It’s China’s first spacecraft to Mars, and the missions are rather ambitious. Tianwen 1 aims to achieve “orbiting, landing, and roving (环绕,着陆,巡视)” all in one journey, which will make the country the world’s first to achieve all three goals with one probe, mission scientists said.
Among the three tasks, touchdown on the red planet is the most difficult. The result mainly depends on the “breathtaking (惊险的) seven minutes” to make sure Tianwen 1 land safely, according to the Global Times.
February was Mars month. NASA’s Perseverance Rover (毅力号火星车) landed on Mars on Feb 19, and China’s Tianwen 1 and United Arab Emirates’ Hope Probe have arrived within orbit of the red planet. Although the three countries started their Mars journeys at almost the same time, their missions vary. Hope Probe successfully entered the orbit of Mars on Feb 9. Perseverance will collect samples (样品) of rock and soil for further research. Tianwen 1’s ultimate goal is to land a rover on Mars in May or June, and it will carry out scientific research on Mars’ soil, environment, water and so on.
“When we step into the far planets of the solar system, the magnitude (量) of the resources and timeline required will take global action,” a US official said, highlighting (强调) the importance of international cooperation (合作) in space.

D.Completing entering the orbit of Mars.
44.What can we learn about Tianwen 1?
A.It is expected to land on Mars in May or June.
B.It will spend 10 months preparing for its landing.
C.It’s one of the 46 successful Mars exploration missions.
D.It’s the world’s first probe to enter the orbit around Mars.
45.What can we infer (推测) from the US official’s words in the last paragraph?
A.Space exploration calls for global cooperation.
B.There are risks (危险) in exploring other planets.
C.Tianwen 1 will reach other planets besides Mars.
