“Am I beautiful now,Mama?”
My heart quickly fell to my stomach.
“What do you mean,now?”
“Now that my hair is all done,I’m beautiful, right?”
I had just put the brush down by my side when my stomach immediately somersaulted(翻滚) in guilt and fear and my mind was instantly puzzled with confusion. Why was she questioning this?Didn’t she already know?I told her how beautiful she was every morning when she rose for the new day and every night as she drifted off to sleep.I wanted to yell that this world attached too many attempts to “make pretty” and commercialized the use of product after product.
I tried to control my heart and explained to her,“Baby girl, you are beautiful every day because you are kind and smart, creative and brave. You use good manners and stand up for yourself.” I put my hand on her heart and pulled her in close.“But styling your hair doesn’t make you beautiful. And wearing certain colors or styles can’t do it either. What makes you beautiful is the person you are.Do you know where beauty really comes from?”
She thought for a minute.I gently tapped my fingers that were still resting on her heart.“From inside here. And your heart shines so brightly that it makes you incredibly beautiful.” I could feel her heart start to beat a little stronger and a smile appeared across her face.
I squeezed her tight and added,“You are so beautiful, baby girl, and I hope you never stop believing it.And I hope you never let anyone tell you differently.”
She stood up and brushed her freshly braided hair off her shoulder.
“I know,Mama.I’m beautiful because I’m ME.”
The somersaults stopped. The guilt and fear were washed away. The confusion was clarified.
“Hey Mama,” she said as she started to walk away.“You are beautiful, too.”

Many people travel to enrich and enjoy themselves. However, their travel methods may be different each year.
Lonely Planet and Forbes concluded some top trends in 2021.Here are three of them for you to take a look.
Solo travel
Traditionally, travel seems to be a group activity to have fun together and avoid loneliness. But solo travel became popular, especially among young people in 2021.
Traveling on your own means that you are the boss of everything, choosing wherever you want to go,whatever you eat and whenever you go out.For some people,it also makes them a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything.Traveling in a totally foreign land on your own can be challenging.“It opens up your mind to new things, and pushes you out of your comfort zone,” Kristina Wegscheider,a traveler from the US,told Travel Pulse.
Augmented attractions
World travel can be expensive. But virtual reality(虚拟现实)and augmented reality(增强现实),or VR and AR,are giving more possibilities to travel for little cost. With ever-improving headsets, smartphones and Wi-Fi connections, people can have a 360-degree experience of museums, theme parks and historical sites.
With these technologies, visitors can experience the surface of Mars with just a headset,or view a sea cow’s growing flesh before their eyes in a museum.
Getting off the touristy path
There are always some “must-see” spots anywhere you travel. But traveling in such places always brings problems like overcrowding and noise.
In order to have a better travel experience, many tended to visit less famous places in 2021.With less transportation and fewer things to do,visiting a little town lets people slow down and notice the little things.Take a walk, ride a bike, sip coffee a little slower, take a deep breath and explore the natural scenery.
8.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To describe the travel trends of 2021.
B.To encourage more people to travel.
C.To recommend hot travel spots.
D.To explain what makes a good trip.
9.How do VR and AR change the way we travel?
A.They allow us to visit places at a low cost.
B.They make museums the hottest destinations.
C.They challenge us to walk out of our comfort zones.
D.They make space travel a reality for ordinary people.
10.Why do many choose not to travel to the “must-see” spots?
A.Because they have seen them before.
B.Because they will spend too much money.
C.Because there are too many tourists there.
D.Because they hate local people there.
11.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
A.Problems with visiting “must-see” spots.
B.Tips for tourists who like to get close to nature.
C.Why it is important to slow down to travel.
D.Why some people prefer to visit less famous places.
D
Teenagers who travel around the world alone have been making headlines quite often.A young person alone in a dangerous situation attracts attention and sponsors.Young sailors also attract various views. For example,Jessica Watson was asked by the government to cancel her voyage, yet the Prime Minister called her “a hero for young Australians” when she returned. It seems that there is confusion about the competence and independence of young people.
The popular psychologists tell us that teenage brains are likely to make wrong judgments. But such ideas often do not apply to specific individuals.Between the ages of 14 and 18,teenagers vary greatly in their abilities. The amount of independence that each is allowed should be determined not simply by their age but by discussion with the related, responsible adults. Some teens are certainly inexperienced and can make childish mistakes, but the ones who attempt dangerous journeys normally do so by winning the confidence of hard-headed and well-qualified adult supporters.
But it’s also wrong to think that any 16-year-old can desire to get achievements as unusual as Jessica Watson’s.Watson calls herself “an ordinary girl who has a dream”.Her intention is to encourage teenagers but this idea can have the opposite effect of making them feel not good enough because great achievements are beyond them.Should all teens have such dreams?Actually, individuals face varying circumstances that restrict their dreams.
Teenagers who travel around the world alone should not be judged by preconceived (事先形成的) views about young people.Nor should young “ordinary” teenagers feel stressed to long for extraordinary personal goals. In fact,I believe the example of solo sailing overstresses individualism. The teenage years are when most of us “ordinary” people learn that we can achieve great things in cooperation with others.
12.What can we learn about Jessica Watson?
A.She was criticized by the government.
B.She eventually canceled her voyage.
C.She has traveled around Australia.
D.She made a successful voyage.
13.What can be inferred about teenagers from the text?
A.They have similar abilities.
B.They make decisions on their own.
C.They always make wrong judgments.
D.They need support of responsible adults.
14.Who does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Parents. B.Teenagers.
C.Psychologists. D.Adults.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Divided Opinions on Young Adventurers
B.Problems Faced by Adventurous Teens
C.Various Ways to Become Independent
D.Pressure to Achieve Personal Goals
How to protect your privacy when you travel
It hasn’t been an easy year for the privacy of travelers,at least so far.Data leaks, surveillance(监视)worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious. 16 Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard your privacy on land and in the air. These tips can help you deal with these troubles.
17 “It’s not clever to declare on Meta that you’re traveling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty,” says Danny McLoughlin.“That puts your security at risk.” Wait until you return to start posting vacation photos.
Some homeowners renting their residences may install security cameras.Travelers should find out if the hosts are required to disclose the presence of surveillance devices. If the rental comes with cameras, ensure they aren’t in a sensitive area by conducting a careful sweep. 18
Although you can’t control how a hotel or airline handles—or mishandles—your data, you can take reasonable steps to ensure the information it has won’t get you into trouble. 19
But some of the worst data leaks happen when you’re staying at a hotel. For example,a hotel clerk sometimes asks for your name and then announces your room number after you’ve checked in.You had better hand the employee your ID when he or she asks for your name and ask the employee to write your room number on a piece of paper. Why? 20 Just to be sure, never leave the customer copy behind. You can destroy it later, but keep it under your control.
A.It’s never been better.
B.Perhaps they should be.
C.Travelers say they’re taking privacy seriously.
D.Never broadcast your journey on social media.
E.There are other people on the other side of the wall.
F.Some travelers only offer the bare minimum, such as a P.O.box instead of a home address.
G.Report anything doubtful to the host immediately—and if you don’t like what you hear, leave.

Twenty years ago,Chase Poust was only 7.On Sunday morning just before Memorial Day,he,his dad Steven, and his 4-year-old sister Abigail, were out for a family boating trip on Florida’s St.Johns River.Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck(甲板) fishing.
It was a perfect outing— it was so peaceful and the colors of the deep blue sky,the light green river water and the mild late May sunshine mixed to create a magic scene.Off the shore lay quietly several cottages.Everything was sound until a strong current emerged and loosened Abigail’s grasp and she let go of the boat.Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away,Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her.At the same time,Chase screamed at his father desperately.
Without thinking twice,Steven jumped into the water and swam towards the two kids with all his efforts. But after realizing he couldn’t keep up with both kids,he was faced with a heartbroken decision. He told them he loved them very much because he wasn’t sure what’s going to happen.Steven tried his best to stick with both of his children. He wore himself out.But his little daughter was washed away from him.Directing Chase to swim to shore for help,Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old,but rather than attempting to swim all out,Chase wisely paced himself.Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired,he’d rest and then set off again. The current was going the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore,so it was very hard to swim that way for Chase.
An hour later,Chase swam to the shore, anyhow. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Luckily,Steven and Abigail were found and rescued. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
根据BIRD WALK中的“Suitable for ages 5 and up”;NATURE HIKE下的“Suitable for ages 8 and up”;POMPERAUG RIVER EXPLORATION下的“Suitable for ages 8 and up”以及OWL PROWL下的“Suitable for ages 10 and up”可知,BIRD WALK适合Brown夫妇带着5岁的女儿参加,故选A项。
根据POMPERAUG RIVER EXPLORATION中的“Once the animals are caught,we will observe and identify them and learn how they can help show the health of the river before we put them back to the wild.”
根据第五段中的“my stomach immediately somersaulted in guilt and fear and my mind was instantly puzzled with confusion”可知,对女儿的问题作者感觉很震惊。
根据第四段女儿所述“‘Now that my hair is all done.I’m beautiful,right?’”
根据第七段作者所述“‘From inside here. And your heart shines so brightly that it makes you incredibly beautiful.’”
根据全文故事叙述及女儿的回答“‘I know,Mama.I’m beautiful because I’m ME.’” 再根据最后一句“‘Hey Mama,’she said as she started to walk away.‘You are beautiful,too.’”
根据第二段“Lonely Planet and Forbes concluded some top trends in 2021.Here are three of them for you to take a look.” 故选A项。
根据Augmented attractions部分第一段中的“World travel can be expensive. But virtual reality and augmented reality,or VR and AR,are giving more possibilities to travel for little cost.” 故选A项。
Getting off the touristy path部分第一段“There are always some ‘must-see’ spots anywhere you travel. But traveling in such places always brings problems like overcrowding and noise.”
由此可知,“必看”的地方会存在“过度拥挤(人多)”和噪音等问题;结合最后一段第一句“In order to have a better travel experience, many tended to visit less famous places in 2021.”
根据第一段第四句“For example,Jessica Watson was asked by the government to cancel her voyage, yet the Prime Minister called her ‘a hero for young Australians’ when she returned.”
根据第二段最后两句“The amount of independence that each is allowed should be determined not simply by their age...by winning the confidence of hard-headed and well-qualified adult supporters.”
根据第三段画线词所在句子以及上文 “But it’s also wrong to think that any 16-year-old can desire to get achievements as unusual as Jessica Watson’s.”
故选A项。
16.B 空格位于段中,根据空格处上一句“Data leaks, surveillance worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious.”
根据空格处下一句“‘It’s not clever to declare on Meta that you’re traveling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty,’says Danny McLoughlin.”
18.G 根据空格处上一句“If the rental comes with cameras,ensure they aren’t in a sensitive area by conducting a careful sweep.” G项中的“the host”与本句中的“the rental”呼应。
根据空格处上一句“Although you can’t control how a hotel or airline handles—or mishandles—your data, you can take reasonable steps to ensure the information it has won’t get you into trouble.” F项中的“such as a P.O.box instead of a home address”与本句中的“the information”呼应,所以F项“有些旅客只提供最低限度的信息,例如邮政信箱,而不是家庭住址。”
20.E 根据本段中的“You had better hand...on a piece of paper.”
22.A 根据上文的we were to take naps可知,七岁那年的夏天作者去果园的树上午休。故选A项。
24.C 根据后面的“the orchard,our house,fields,barns and fences”可知,在树上“我”有广阔的视野。
in disguise“伪装”;as well“也”;in vain“徒劳的”;as usual“像往常一样”,故选D项。
29.A 根据后文的on a thick branch可知,这只猫头鹰落在了一根粗壮的树枝上。
adapt to“适应”;fade out“淡出;渐弱”;get stuck“被困住”;get offended“被冒犯”。
31.B 根据下文的“among branches until she noticed me”可知,猫头鹰在树枝间来回飞动。now and then “时而”;back and forth“前前后后”;day in and day out“天天;夜以继日”;trial and error“反复试验”,故选B项。
34.A 根据前面的“She had been gone so long”可知,猫头鹰已经飞走很长时间了,作者认为猫头鹰不会回来了。give up“放弃”;cut up“切碎”;cast down“使沮丧;使下降”;break down“崩溃”,故选 A项。
35.B 根据上文中的“Unexpectedly,the owl reappeared in January”可知,猫头鹰返回来了。
由时间状语over the last few decades可知,此处应使用现在完成时。
be accessible to是固定搭配,意为“可为……
as a result of为固定短语,意为“由于……;出于……
