Food festivals are a common occurrence in the UK and take place in all sorts of places and at all sorts of times. Whatever your taste, there’s a food festival to match — no matter how specialized.
1. Meatopia
This three-day, London-based festival takes place at the end of August and is a meat lover’s paradise. In addition to a range of legally sourced meat products, from juicy burgers to tender steaks, attendees can listen to live music, watch butchery demonstrations, and attend informal meat-based workshops.
2. The National Honey Show
If you have a sweet tooth, then it could be that the National Honey Show, which started in 1921 and is the largest event of its kind, is the place for you to be. This three-day event attracts many local entries who showcase their sweet golden honey, some of which is sold globally.
3. The Orange Sauce Festival
Have you heard about a festival that is devoted only to orange sauce? Held in Cumbria, this sweet, fragrant festival has been running for 3 years. What attracts people most is a competition to find the best homemade orange sauce. There are thousands of participants from over 30 different countries across the globe, bringing their local snacks to share here.
4. The Ginger and Spice Festival
If you’d prefer something with a little more kick to it, then you could attend The Ginger (姜) and Spice Festival held in Market Drayton. Unlike other food festivals, it celebrates its town’s historic connection to Robert Clive, who returned from India with ginger. Because of this, they specialize in baking gingerbread, but also sell a range of traditional spices from mild to hot.
1. What do Meatopia and the National Honey Show have in common?
A. They are of the same duration.
B. Both of them hold workshops.
C. Both of them originated from London.
D. Both of them have a long history.
2. If you are interested in foreign food, which festival do you like best?
A. The Meatopia. B. The Ginger and Spice Festival.
C. The National Honey Show. D. The Orange Sauce Festival.
3. What is special about the Ginger and Spice Festival ?
A. It has something to do with a historic figure.
B. The ginger used in the festival is from India.
C. It sells spicy food.
D. The food is cooked by Robert Clive.

根据Meatopia中“This three-day, London-based festival takes place at the end of August …(这个在伦敦举行的为期三天的节日在八月底举行……)”和The National Honey Show中“This three-day event attracts many local entries…(这个为期三天的活动吸引了许多本地参赛者……)” 故选A。
根据The Orange Sauce Festival中“There are thousands of participants from over 30 different countries across the globe, bringing their local snacks to share here.(来自全球30多个国家的数千名参与者带着他们的当地小吃在这里分享)”可知,因为有来自全球30多个国家的数千名参与者带着他们的当地小吃在这里分享,所以如果对外国食物感兴趣,可以去The Orange Sauce Festival。
根据最后一段“Unlike other food festivals, it celebrates its town’s historic connection to Robert Clive, who returned from India with ginger. (与其他美食节不同的是,它庆祝的是该镇与罗伯特·克莱夫的历史渊源,克莱夫从印度带着姜回来)”可知,因为和历史人物有关系,所以the Ginger and Spice 美食节很特别。故选A。
B
Binge-watching (刷剧) is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession (一连串, 连续). With developments in the speed and connectivity of the internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, “binge-watching” has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back (一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said: “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?
The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good.”
4. How did the writer develop the first paragraph?
A. By giving a definition. B. By telling a story.
C. By listing some examples. D. By analyzing the cause and effect.
5. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “concurrently” in para. 2?
A. for convenience. B. at the same time.
C. in detail. D. free of charge.
6. What Lindsey said in Paragraph 4 implies that ________.
A. people can’t control their feelings
B. people can’t resist the temptation
C. people have no patience to do work
D. people are addicted to waiting for a new episode
7. What advice did the writer give at last?
A. To keep online media from stopping functioning.
B. To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.
C. To learn life lessons from the episodes.
D. To watch episodes in a moderate way.
A 5. B 6. B 7. D
根据文章第一段Binge-watching (刷剧) is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession (一连串, 连续).
Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode. 故可推断concurrently在本句中意为同时,同at the same time同义,故选B。
Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said: “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.”
So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good.”
文章中的代词it, that, he, him 或them可以指上文提到的人或物,其中it和that还可以指一件事。
Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode. 故可推断concurrently在本句中意为同时,同at the same time同义,故选B。

17-year-old Dasia Taylor was named one of 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the nation’s most famous Science and math competition for high school seniors.
Dasia’s sutures (缝合线) work by changing color if the patients’ pH level changes, indicating an infection. pH is one of the most common parts of wound healing, Dasia said. It changes very quickly, so it’s one of the fastest ways to recognize infection.
So, she started experimenting with root vegetables. “I found that beet changed color at the perfect pH point,” says Taylor. “That’s perfect for an infected wound. And so, I was like, ‘Oh, okay. So beet is where it’s at’.” Beet provided the perfect dye for her invention, changing from bright red to dark purple when a surgical wound becomes infected. After more than a year of research, Taylor is working on getting her sutures patented.
She imagines these sutures being used in developing countries where they can save lives and money. “The goal of my project is to reduce the number of deadly surgical site infections in developing countries because developing countries suffer from the most number of deaths due to surgical site infections,” she said. “I was like there is no way that that should be happening. The equity part of my brain and all the work that I do around equity was like ‘That shouldn’t be happening. They should have the resources to save their citizens in their country.’ So, my goal is to work on that and make sure that it can actually discover those types of infections and stuff.” After graduation, Dasia hopes to attend Howard University, study political science and finally become a lawyer.
8. How can a patient quickly know if a wound is infected?
A. By observing the pH test paper.
B. Through the doctors’ examination.
C. By looking at sutures’ color changing.
D. By observing how the wound changes.
9. What did Dasia discover in her experiment?
A. Beet has the same pH level. B. Beet can change color at different times.
C. Beet therapy is good for wound healing. D. Beet can be used to help her with the invention.
10. What can we learn about Dasia?
A. She has won the invention patent.
B. She became the winner of the Regeneron STS.
C. She made contributions to surgical infection recognition.
D. She helped save lots of lives and money in developing countries.
11. What will Dasia’s future career probably involve?
A. Medical and health work. B. Medical device development.
C. Something about the legal aid. D. Medical and science research.
C 9. D 10. C 11. C

D
You may not realize it, but when you stare at your partner's eyes, there's a good chance that you’re looking at a modified reflection of yourself. Researchers have found that people choose partners who tend to be of similar size, shape, and race as themselves ... and they may even have facial features in common.
Take Lot Geels from Amsterdam and her American husband, Brock Mosovsky, for example. “We have similar blonde hair and blue eyes,” says Lot. “Neither of us is very tall. We're both built athletically and we’re both mainly of European origin.
Even if you don't look like your partner, you likely share nonphysical characteristics, according to a growing field of research, like education level, socioeconomic status, religion, personality features, and even core values.
Lot and Brock fall into this type as well. “We both have PhDs and work in research,” she says. “We both live an active lifestyle, mainly rock climbing and skiing. Our world views are pretty simi-lar, and we're both hard-working, social and friendly people.”
Researchers have been studying the phenomenon of people with similarities pairing up—known as positive assortative coupling—for decades. If you’re sure that “opposites attract”, you may be surprised by research findings, which prove that like attracts like. However, if you believe that “likes attract”, you probably understand why people surprisingly seek life partners who remind them, on some comforting level, of themselves.
“There's an element of predictability when you date somebody of a similar background,” says Ty Tashiro, the author of The Science of Happily Ever After. “They’re less threatening, less scary. They'll be more of a familiar person from the start. Familiarity is something we find attractive.”
12 What can we infer about Lot and Brock?
A. They have the same hair and eyes. B. They both come from wealthy families.
C. They are attracted by each other’s similarities. D. They both have the same cultural background.
13. Which of the following is close to the underlined expression “positive assortative”?
A. Of the preferred type. B. Of the different type.
C. Of the similar type. D. Of the original type.
14. Why do people try to find similar people as partners according to Ty Tashiro?
A. They are comfortable to stay with. B. They are more threatening and scarier.
C. They can develop the same hobbies and interests. D. They have the same status and back ground.
15. What message does the author try to convey?
A. Love me, love my dog. B. Birds of a feather flock together.
C. A good wife makes a good husband. D. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
C 13. C 14. A 15. B
