Course description
In this course we explore modern literature from early pioneers such as Emily Dickinson, Hemingway, Philip Roth and Toni Morrison. We focus mainly on shorter fiction and poetry, but may also look at excerpts (摘录) from some longer works.
We consider not only the meanings of the works but also how they are written and constructed to give them their power. While we focus largely on close reading and formal analysis, we also look at the historical contexts of the works. Additionally, we pay attention to how literature sounds and how it makes us feel.
Students are expected to write a number of informal reaction pieces, contribute actively to class discussion, take part in a few short creative projects, and prepare short papers and oral presentations on works of their own choice.
Students learn how to read actively, think analytically, present their ideas clearly, and work with others—all skills that will be invaluable to them in college and in their professional and personal lives. No previous knowledge or course work is required.
Instructor: Mark Blacher
Mark Blacher holds a master’s degree in comparative literature from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In a sport known for its youthful champions, Chusovitina has become a global fan favorite. She has collected 11 medals at major global championships and 5 gymnastics skills are named after her.
Chusovitina was born on June 19, 1975, in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, and she participated in the Olympic Games for the first time in Barcelona in 1992.

Chusovitina represented Germany for the final time at the 2012 Olympics, and she has been competing for Uzbekistan ever since. After her son’s recovery, Chusovitina continued to compete, but this time it was her love of gymnastics that kept her going. “There is no secret. Every year, Arctic terns(燕鸥) migrate from the Arctic to the Antarctic, a round-trip of about 80,000 kilometers. New research finds that these far-flying birds use just a few select routes for their travels.
“The Arctic tern is well-known to people as a record holder. It holds the world record for the longest migration of any animal, and therefore interacts with a variety of ecosystems along the way,” lead author Joanna Wong says.
“They are an indicator species that can tell us so much about the different ecosystems that they travel through,” Wong continues. “If they don’t make it to their destination in one year, then you know there might be an environmental problem somewhere along their routes.”
Globally, Arctic terns are reducing. Their crossing such a long distance has made it hard for researchers to see where the problem is. “These birds are difficult to study because they are either living in polar environments, or on the go,” Wong says.
So in order to track them, Wong and her colleagues attached light-level geographical positioning devices to the legs of 53 Arctic terns. These devices are actually small computers that record surrounding light intensities(强度). “The length of daylight can tell us the latitude(纬度), while the time of solar noon can tell us the longitude. So we are able to judge positions of the birds,” Wong says.
Researchers compared the routes taken by the birds they followed and the migration timing to other Arctic terns that had previously been tracked. They determined terns in different areas all end up taking similar routes.
Some other seabirds also use the same paths, which suggests that the routes aren’t specific just to the Arctic terns and that protecting them may be beneficial to other species.
8. What are Arctic terns famous for according to the text?
A. Their title of long-distance travelers.
B. Their contribution to local ecosystems.
C. Their ability to survive in polar climates.
D. Their preference for certain migratory routes.
9. Which of the following statements about Arctic terns may Wong agree with?
A. Their final destination changes each year.
B. They choose different migratory routes each year.
C. They help us be aware of related environmental problems.
D. Their migratory journey usually takes more than one year.
10. What challenge does the researchers meet when studying Arctic terns?
A. They can hardly get access to Arctic terns.
B. They know very little about polar environments.
C. They have difficulty protecting Arctic terns’ habitats.
D. They fail to figure out Arctic terns’ migratory routes.
11. What can we learn from the study?
A. Terns around the world live at the same place.
B. The protection of Arctic terns is easy to achieve.
C. Terns’ migratory routes are affected by other seabirds.
D. It’s significant to protect Arctic terns’ migratory routes.
A 9. C 10. A 11. D
根据第二段““The Arctic tern is well-known to people as a record holder. It holds the world record for the longest migration of any animal, and therefore interacts with a variety of ecosystems along the way,” lead author Joanna Wong says.”(“北极燕鸥是众所周知的记录保持者。它保持着在任何动物迁徙时间中最长的世界纪录,因此一路上与各种生态系统相互作用,”主要作者乔安娜·王说。)可知,北极燕鸥以它们远距离旅行者的头衔而著名。故选A项。
“If they don’t make it to their destination in one year, then you know there might be an environmental problem somewhere along their routes.””(王继续说。“如果它们在一年内没有达到目的地,那么你就知道在它们的路线上可能会有环境问题。”)可知,北极燕鸥的迁徙时长可以帮我们了解沿途是否有环境问题,推断出王同意的观点是北极燕鸥帮助我们了解相关的环境问题。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““These birds are difficult to study because they are either living in polar environments, or on the go,” Wong says.”(“这些鸟很难研究,因为他们要么生活在极地环境中,要么在前进中。” 故选A项。
根据最后一段“Some other seabirds also use the same paths, which suggests that the routes aren’t specific just to the Arctic terns and that protecting them may be beneficial to other species.”(一些其它的海鸟也使用相同的路径,这表明这些路线不仅仅是北极燕鸥独有的,保护它们可能对其他物种有益。)
D
When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every mile and push myself to race for personal bests. But as I transitioned from running for sport to running for amusement as an adult, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that comes with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced the watch battery, and experts say that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.
This is the idea of unplugged(不插电的) running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout.
“People used to have an interest in their sport and got enjoyment out of the sport, but now that’s switching to the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. “They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And ultimately we know that makes them feel bad.”
Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workout if the batteries on their tracking device are dead.
In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual jogger. Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch. He stopped tracking his pace years ago and only trains based on his effort and his overall running time: Getting rid of the pace tracking on his watch, as well as switching off other technology while he runs, has helped him get more “in tune” with his body.
“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,” Hofbauer said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”
12. What happened to the author when his running watch didn’t work?
A. He lost the desire to keep running every day.
B. He experienced running as a really fun activity.
C. He was at a loss how to replace the watch battery.
D. He had great difficulty achieving his fitness goals.
13. What does Eoin Whelan think of running watches?
A. They can lead to hurtful comparisons.
B. The way people use them is different.
C. The data provided by them is not correct.
D. They can help enrich the wearers’ social life.
14. Why does the author mention Trevor Hofbauer in paragraph 5?
A. To show the popularity of running watch-free.
B. To encourage people to become professional runners.
C. To prove the positive effects of running watch-free.
D. To present professionals’ views on running watch-free.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. It is time to take off your running watch
B. The running watch is gaining more popularity
C. We should enjoy a break without a running watch
D. A running watch can slow down your running speed
B 13. A 14. C 15. A

根据第一段中“And it wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that comes with running for the pure joy of it.(直到几年前我的手表没电了,我才第一次体会到跑步带来的那种纯粹的快乐)”可知,当作者的手表不走了,他把跑步当作一项真正有趣的活动。
根据第三段最后两句“They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And in the end we know that makes them feel bad.(他们会和更好的人攀比,和跑得更快或跑得更久的人攀比。最终,我们知道那样会让他们更难受)”约恩·惠兰认为运动追踪手表会带来相互攀比的问题,会让运动者感觉很糟糕;及根据第四段“Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workouts if the batteries on their tracking devices are dead.(惠兰还指出,人们如果过度依赖智能手表或运动追踪手表,一旦手表电池没电了,很可能就会丧失运动的动力)”可知,对运动手表的过度依赖会让人们失去内在的运动动力。 故选A项。
根据第五段中“In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual jogger. Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch. He stopped tracking his pace years ago and only trains based on his effort and his overall running time: Getting rid of the pace tracking on his watch, as well as switching off other technology while he runs, has helped him get more “in tune” with his body.(此外,有证据表明,不戴手表跑步不仅对普通慢跑者有益。
由此可知本文主要论述不戴运动手表跑步是有益的,所以A项“It is time to take off your running watch(是时候取下你的手表了)”是本文最好的标题。故选A项。

空前“Thus, we have sought advice from some experts on where to start.(因此,我们已经向一些专家寻求建议,从哪里开始。)”
空后“If you’re interested in skill training, or basic manners, such as teaching your dog to sit, stay and lie down, that’s the field of a dog trainer. If your dog has a behavior problem-anxiety, aggressiveness, fearfulness-then what you need is a dog behavioral consultant.(如果你对技能训练或基本礼仪感兴趣,比如教你的狗坐、呆和躺,那就是驯狗师的领域。如果你的狗狗有行为问题——焦虑、攻击性、恐惧——那么你需要的是狗狗行为咨询师。)”介绍了两种水平的训练,因此空格处应引起下文,指出有两种水平的训练,D选项“Usually there are two levels of dog training(通常狗的训练分为两种)”说明了有两种水平的训练,因此D选项引起下文,符合语境,故选D。
【18题详解】
空后“If you don’t want to pay a lot of money for dog training, you can choose free or low-cost resources you can find online.(如果你不想花很多钱训练狗,你可以选择免费或低成本的资源,你可以在网上找到。)”
空格处是本段小标题,由空后的“Generally speaking, many trainers fall into two broad categories. The first is positive reinforcement (强化) trainers, which means giving your dog something good to train. The second is balanced trainers who are willing to make a series of corrections using positive reinforcement methods.(一般来说,许多培训师可以分为两大类。第一种是积极强化训练师,这意味着给你的狗狗一些好东西来训练。第二种是愿意使用正强化方法进行一系列纠正的平衡训练者。)”可知,本段主要讲的是训练的方法,A选项“Understand the methods(理解方法)”说明了要理解训练的方法,概括了本段主要内容,可作为小标题,故选A。
【20题详解】
空前“Your dog may bark at your guests.(你的狗可能会对你的客人吠叫。)”

Driving Less Is a Practical Way of Car Free
In the world today, billions of cars are traveling the world's roads. More cars mean more pollution. To highlight this problem, Car Free Day, an international event, is celebrated on September 22 every year, with the aim of increasing people's awareness of environmental protection and encourage people to use public transport, cycle or walk.
Living in such a fast-paced society, avoiding driving cars completely is unpractical. But we can still do our part by driving less. We can choose to ride a bike to our destination if it's within 10 km. Walking to our destination within 1 km is also a good choice.
If you are a responsible person, participating in this meaningful activity is a good opportunity to make contributions to helping create a more harmonious world. Let’s work together to make it.
