An Arizona aquarium is celebrating the hatching of three endangered African penguin chicks, saying the tiny additions are genetically ( 从基因方面) valuable as zo0s and aquariums around the world work to ensure the species ’survival through breeding (培育) programs and conservation efforts.
Officials at OdySea Aquarium made the announcement Friday, posting video of the cute birds on social media. They hatched a few weeks ago and will remain behind the scenes with their parents until they're ready for a public appearance.
African penguins have suffered a massive population decline over the decades and are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. So any successful hatching is cause for celebration, said Jess Peranteau, director of animal care and education at the aquarium.
“As the population of the African penguin continues to rapidly decline - down 23% in the past two years alone -OdySea Aquarium remains committed to the survival of the species in partnership with other Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” Peranteau said in a statement. The breeding program established by the association aims to build up a gene bank for the species.
Officials say two of the three new chicks in Scottsdale were born to parents Mojo and Lemieux-a power couple of sorts that was selected for pairing as part of the breeding program. The third chick was born to first-time parents Bubbles and Weasley.
Aquarium workers will regularly conduct “chick checks",brief exams to monitor their growth and development and ensure they are hitting all necessary milestones. The three chicks have yet to be named, and their sex hasn't yet been determined. For now they're known by their numbers, 42,43 and 44. In all, OdySea Aquarium now has 40 African penguins and has recorded 13 successful hatchings.

One Alahama school was extremely creative in encouraging students to read more and to help improve the school district’s literacy. They added an Inchy's Bookworm Vending Machine ( 售货机) an actual vending machine that allows students to add a special coin and get a brand new book.
Sixth-grade reading teacher Kristy White said students have been inspired to earn coins so they can get a new book. Every classroom has coins, and students can earn them by improving in their reading or math skills or exhibiting good behavior.
Kristy said it only takes one coin to use the machine. Nice! What's even nicer is there are books for all grade levels and students even make suggestions for titles they'd like to see available. Funding for the vending machine came from community support through donations and grants.
Lucy Williamson was the first student to use the machine. The sixth-grader said she can see the growing excitement of her fellows and she looks forward to getting even more books. “This has some different books that the library doesn't have and I'm able to keep the book longer because it's mine so I have more time to read it,” Lucy said. She also shared that she rereads books often, so being able to choose a book that she can take home is a real plus.
Beyond reading, the vending machine has also encouraged students to behave better. And when a student gets a coin, everyone celebrates the win. “The students are thrilled when they are the student who gets the coin that week or one of the students, they come down here and the students cheer for them," Kristy said.
We're cheering for them, too! This is such a unique way to motivate students. Reading is so fundamental that it really serves as the foundation for all other learning. This vending machine is just one way to help students succeed.
12. What does the underlined word "literacy" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Communication skills.
B. Academic performance.
C. Professional knowledge.
D. Reading and writing ability.
13. What can we know about the vending machine?
A. It charges students for the special coins.
B. It encourages students' positive growth.
C. It turns a blind eye to students' proposals.
D. It aims to raise money for local community.
14. Why did Lucy commit herself to using the vending machine?
A. To enrich her extra-curricular life.
B. To escape from the school library.
C. To enjoy selecting and rereading books.
D. To gain respect and praise from her fellows.
15. Which is the suitable title for the text?
A. Kristy White: a Creative Reading Teacher
B. Lucy Williamson: a Model Pupil at School
C. A Unique Way to Inspire Students to Read
D. The Importance of Offering Reading Courses

The first time we set eyes on “Big Red”, father, mother and I were on our way home. As we passed the Eaton's department store's window, we stopped as usual to have a look and do a bit of dreaming.
The beautifully decorated window display held the best toys ever. There were dolls much too pretty to play with. And they all lay beneath a surprisingly fantastic dress. Mother's eyes were glued to its shining red satin (缎子) .
“My goodness," she whispered. "Look, at that!" Then, mother looked down at her own coat -she had worn the heavy grey wool coat every winter for as long as I could remember. Mom was forever doing chores-washing laundry, tending the pigs and working in the garden-so she always wore housedresses and an apron ( 围裙) to protect the front. She did have one or two “special” dresses saved for church on Sundays. Also, she managed to make almost all of our clothes. They weren't fancy, but they were comfortable.
“What a silly dress!" She shook her head. “Who on earth would want such a big dress?" As we continued down the street, mother turned her head for one more look. “My goodness! You'd think they'd display something a person could use!"
Mother's Day was nearing, and the red dress was soon forgotten. Mother, of all people, was not one to spend money on items that were not practical. “There are things we need more than this. ”She'd always say. Choosing a gift for Mother's Day for her was quite hard. When Dad and I asked, she thought carefully then asked for some tea towels, face cloths or a new basin.
On our last trip to town before Mother's Day, we were driving up Main Street when Mother suddenly shouted in surprise: “Look!" She pointed excitedly as Dad drove past Eaton's. “That big red dress is gone,” she said in disbelief. “Who'd be fool enough to buy such a dress?" Mother questioned, shaking her head. I was almost certain that I noticed a trace of longing (一丝渴望) in her voice.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the morning of Mother's Day, Mother got a large box that read “Eaton's Finest Basin” on its wrapping paper.
“Oh Frank…” She choked up and couldn't say a word, tears welling up in her eyes.

An activity called Swap Now was held in the stadium of our school last Friday to efficiently deal with old items or those not in use.
Both teachers and students who had signed up took an active part and brought things they didn't need or use anymore. They introduced their items and communicated with those who wanted them. The value of unused things was enhanced through the activity.
Swap Now turned out a success, creating a fashion of sharing in our school. Those involved were very glad and realized that the activity not only benefited our environment but also aroused our awareness of building an economical society.
