Raccn dgs (貉),an animal native t Shanghai, have been sptted in nearly half f surveyed residential cmplexes in a suburban district f Shanghai,an investigatin invlving mass participatin f city residents fund.
Amng the 50 surveyed residential cmplexes in Sngjiang District, 22 have tracks f raccn dg activity, with the number ranging between I and 50, and an average f 10.82 per residential cmmunity, cmpared t 6.02 per residential cmmunity ten years ag. The average ppulatin density(密度) f the animal is 1.08 per hectare(公顷). Seven residential cmplexes have recrded mre than 10 raccn dgs.
"We fund that cat fd and rubbish wuld significantly change the ppulatin density f the animal, leading t an abnrmal increase," said Wang Fang, a researcher at Fudan University's Schl f Life Sciences."Imprper management f waste and cat fd leads t ne extra raccn dg per hectare, dubling the nrmal figure. Meanwhile, the space f residential cmplexes and building layuts have n direct cnnectin with the ppulatin density f the animal."
Since 2019,a prgram was launched by the Shanghai Frestry Statin, a cnservatin bilgy research team at Fudan University and the Shan Shui Cnservatin Center. It fcuses n the research and prtectin f raccn dgs, and the imprvement f bilgical diversity. Varius methds such as n site visits, mnitring f infrared cameras(红外摄像机), the analysis f fd habits, and GPS tracking are taken.
Fr the first time, a prgram invlving the public, with participants nicknamed "citizen scientists," started in June t study the mvement f the animal and ppulatin,as well as peple's attitude tward them. Meanwhile, it drew mre than 300 applicatins. In the future, the study will be expanded with mre "citizen scientists” invited ,the Shanghai Greenery and Pubic Sanitatin Bureau said.
