How would you feel if your school banned phones in class?
In February, the Ministry of Education announced that mobile phones should, in principle(原则上), be banned(禁止) in primary and secondary schools. This aims to protect students’ eyesight, make sure they focus on their schoolwork and won’t become addicted(上瘾的) to the Internet and online games.
Xu Xiaohe, a 13-year-old from Zhejiang, is a supporter of the policy. “In fact, my school has never allowed us to bring our mobile phones,” Xu said “It’s a distraction(干扰)from our work. Even adults can’t control themselves, let alone kids like us.”
Li Zihan from Beijing, however, feels differently. The 13-year-old believes that a mobile phone ban is too simplistic(简单化的) for a generation that have grown up with mobile phones. "Students should be taught self-management skills, as well as learn how to use their phones well to help with their studies,” “Li said. “That might be the best way to deal with technology(技术) in modern times.”
For Ge Ziqi, the problem with banning mobile phones has more to do with life outside of school. The 13-year-old Beijinger uses a bike-sharing app every day to travel between her home and school. “Today, phones are used everywhere, from taking a bus to buying food,” she said. “If I can’t take my phone with me, I will have to buy my own bicycle.”
Some schools have come up with ideas to solve problems like Ge’s. At Shanghai Shatian School, for example, students are asked to put their phones in special lockers(储物柜) during school hours. The students call these lockers the “phone farm” or “phone tarmac”(停机坪).

“Don’t judge a book by its cover,” the old saying goes. Unluckily, as a teenager, that is often exactly what you do to yourself. Dark thoughts about your physical appearance can hang over you all the time like a rain cloud. Do I look fat in these jeans? Do others think I am too short? These thoughts can have a negative(消极的) influence on people of any shape or size, both male and female, and it is important to guard against the causes behind them.
Standards of beauty in the media can have a big influence on what you think of your physical appearance. Teens who try to copy the looks of their favourite stars are fighting a losing battle—these standards are simply impossible for most of the population to live up to. They will only end up feeling worse about themselves.
Your friends also influence the way you view your physical appearance. If you have friends who are good-looking or have a great fashion sense, it can feel like you are living in their shadow. For children of digital age, social media makes this problem even worse. Your friends may post a “never ending” series of photos online to show off their beautiful dresses or strong bodies, and it becomes easier for you to compare yourself to them. This has proved to have a negative effect on what you think of your physical appearance.
These external influences are always present, but there are certainly ways to deal with them. First of all, be careful not to follow popular beauty standards blindly. They are out of reach for 99% of us, so it is better to just forget about them.
Another tip is to remind yourself that you are unique(独一无二的). Keep in mind that your family and friends love you just the way you are. Talk about your feelings with someone you trust. Focusing on your strength also helps you build your confidence. Everyone has their own talents—you may be good at painting or playing the piano, so take pride in things you do well instead of worrying about things you cannot change.
You may often judge yourself by what is on the outside, not on the inside. However, like a book, your contents are much more important than your cover. If you can learn to see the good things about yourself—your individuality, your value to others, your achievements—you will soon begin to love yourself just the way you are.

If your ears got very cold in winter, what would you invent to keep them warm? Chester Greenwood’s cold ears were a big problem. So he invented earmuffs. Chester lived in Farmington, Maine. He liked to play outside in winter, but he could not stay outside for long. After just a few minutes, Chester’s ears would be painfully cold. They would turn bright red. Then purple, then white, then blue.
In 1873 for his fifteenth birthday, Chester got a pair of ice skates. He couldn’t wait to try them out. Just after he got on the ice, a cold wind hit his ears. He had to run back home in a hurry. By the time he got there, his ears were already blue.
The next day he tied a heavy wool scarf around his head. His ears were finally warm. But the scarf was very scratchy (粗糙扎人的). He had to turn around and go home again.
On the third day, Chester tried again. This time he made loops(圈) out of wire. Then he asked his grandmother to sew a piece of beaver fur(海狸皮毛) on one side of each loop. On the other side of the fur, she sewed a piece of black velvet(天鹅绒). She then sewed the whole thing to Chester’s cap. His ears stayed warm and comfortable the whole time when he skated.
Chester’s neighbors wanted warm ears, too. It wasn’t long before Chester’s mother and grandmother were busy making ear covers.
Greenwood’s Ear Protectors became a big money-making business. When Chester opened an earmuff factory, Farmington became the earmuff capital of the world.
Chester Greenwood invented many other things. However, he may be best known for his earmuffs which are still popular today.

    Audience Etiquette During Sports Games
Many people would like to watch sports games. First, you need to know about audience etiquette (观众礼仪) .

Most sports games have rules for the audience written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don’t leave when a game is in progress. When you leave, remember to take away your soft drink bottles and other rubbish.
During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don’t criticize (批评) the performance of players and coaches. Be careful with your words and behavior, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience.
Clapping (鼓掌) is a special form of body language you can use to communicate with players, but you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them, but don’t go on for too long. After an excellent performance, clap warmly. If someone fails, your clapping will help encourage them. Clapping is not welcome, however, when players need to keep their attention.
Different sports have different rules for the audience. Enjoy gymnastics (体操) silently. But lots of cheers can help basketball and football players. When you watch table tennis games, flash is not allowed. Mobile phones are not allowed in shooting centers.
To behave well, you should spend time learning the game rules and related culture of each event.

There was once a large bottle of fresh, clean water. Every drop of water in the bottle felt proud of being so clear and pure. Day after day they would congratulate each other on how clean and beautiful they were.
But one day, one of the drops got bored with his clean existence (生活). He wanted to see what it would be like to be a dirty drop. The other drops tried to talk him out of the idea, but failed.
When the drop came back all dirty, he turned all the other drops in the bottle into dirty drops, too. They tried to get clean again, but couldn’t. Several months later, someone put the bottle in a fountain. A lot of clean water entered the large bottle and the drops finally regained their purity (洁净).
Now the drops all know that if they want to be clean, then each one of them will have to stay clean. Putting right the mistake of even one single drop requires a lot of hard work.
To some degree, this bottle of water is just like the Earth. If we want to live on a clean planet, each one of us will have to be a “clean drop”. Whenever someone or some country becomes a “dirty drop” and pollutes the air or the ocean, the entire Earth becomes a bit dirtier. It will be very difficult — perhaps even impossible — to make this “bottle of water” clean again.
The same may also happen to you and your class (or school). If you want your class (or school) to be among the best, then each of you will need to behave well. When someone among you does something terrible, your class or school will lose its reputation and it will be very hard to get that reputation back. Are you a “clean drop”?
45.When one of the drops wanted to become dirty, the other drops of water said to him, “________________.”
46.When the dirty drop of water came back, all the other drops in the bottle ________________.
47.If the drops want to be clean, each one of them ________________.
48.According to the writer, if the Earth was the “bottle of water”, then the “dirty drop” would be ________________ that polluted the air or the ocean.
49.If you want your class to be among the best, then each of you ________________.

Have you been quite forgetful lately? Have you been worried? If you are worried about losing keys and forgetting names, here are some ways for you.
Find out your own learning style
We all have our own ways of learning and remembering. Some of us have to say something out loud to remember it; others may have to write it down. Whatever your learning style is, accept it and find out a way that will work with it, whether it is written/audio notes (音频笔记) or some other ways.
    Repeat a lot
Do something many times, and it is possible for you to remember it.
Repeating can help you turn short-term memory into long-term memory. It can feel a little silly writing down everything, or saying something to yourself 10 times in order to get through your day, but if it’s necessary, then go ahead and do it.
    Avoid unnecessary distractions (干扰)
With each day bringing fresh bad news, we have more distractions than ever before. However, there are many ways you can cut down the number of distractions.
The first one is trying to use your mobile phone less. Some studies show Internet use is making our attention last shorter and our memory worse. Although it’s almost impossible to keep away from the Internet, using your mobile phone less can help.
The second one is to avoid doing many things at the same time. It has also been shown to influence long-term memory.
    Ways to Avoid Forgetfulness
Find out your own learning style
▲Both saying something loudly and writing down something can help you remember well.

It’s a long-awaited breakthrough(期待已久的突破)for the International Wushu Federation (协会) (IWF), which made applications to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2001, 2008 and 2011, but failed. The first two applications were refused at the very beginning. The third application made it to the final voting for taking part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games but missed out once again.
Over the years, both the International Wushu Federation and Chinese Wushu Association (CWA) have done a lot to make improvement with strong support from the State General Administration of Sport of China (中国体育总局). The Administration not only offers technical (技术的) support, often sending experts or teachers to help their Wushu training camps, but also generously provides a great deal of Wushu equipment (设备) for free.
Every year, many local Wushu groups are sent abroad to put on Wushu shows, trying to improve the influence of Wushu in foreign countries. Through their continuous efforts. A friend’s grandfather came to America from East Europe. After arriving at Ellis Island, he went into a cafeteria (自助餐厅) in Lower Manhattan to get something to eat. He sat down at an empty table and waited for someone to take his order.
Of course nobody did. Finally, a woman with a tray (餐盘) full of food sat down opposite him and told him how a cafeteria worked.
“Start out at that end,” she said, “Just go along the line and pick out what you want. At the other end they’ll tell you how much you have to pay.”
“I soon learned that’s how everything works in America.” The grandfather told a friend, “Life’s a cafeteria. You can get anything you want as long as you are ready to pay the price. You can even get success. But you’ll never get it if you wait for someone to bring it to you. You have to get up and get it yourself.”
In fact, life is like a cafeteria. Don’t wait for success to come to you. And success is in your own hands.
91.Grandfather knew ________ about the cafeteria before the woman told him about it.
92.The woman told Grandfather how ________ in a cafeteria.
93.From the passage, we can infer (推断) that it was Grandfather’s ________ to eat in a cafeteria.
94.The writer doesn’t think it right ________ in life.
95.Life is like a cafeteria because we need ________ both in a cafeteria and in life.

Science is the best way we have of finding out about the world. Scientists collect evidence(证据). They have ideas about the way things work. Science tests those ideas. Sometimes the test will show that the idea is not correct. If the idea passes the test, it adds to our understanding.
Scientists make observations(观察). They may look, or listen. They may read the work of other scientists. This gives them ideas. You can do this. You can look around you. You can ask questions. You can plan a test to find out. You can discover something new.

Scientists make predictions. They say something about the future. They might say “if I do this, then I think that will happen”. Isaac Newton was a famous scientist. When he shone white light through a glass prism, he saw a spectrum(光谱)of different colors. Newton predicted what would happen if he shone the spectrum through a second prism. He thought the colors would come together and he would see white light again. He tried it. He shone a spectrum through a second prism. He was right. The colors made white light.
He discovered that white light is made up of many colors.
It’s important to test your ideas. It’s important to plan a fair test. A scientist wondered how a tree grows. Where does all that material come from? Was it from the soil?

He planted a young tree in a pot. He weighed the pot, the dry soil and the tree at the start of his test. Years later, the tree had grown tall. It had many branches and leaves. The scientist dug it up. He weighed it. The tree weighed far more than when it was young. Then he weighed the pot and the dry soil. It weighed just a bit less. Where had all the new tree material come from? He decided that trees use water, and a gas from the air, to grow.
96.According to the passage, we know that science can help us _________.
97.We can know scientists try ________ to make observations in paragraph 2.
98.After Newton shone a spectrum of different colors through the prism, he saw ________.
99.The scientist did a test and found that trees can grow because of _________.
100.We have learned that _________ from the passage.

Not long ago, mobile phones were used mainly by business people and government officers in society. In the US, mobile phone users were about 350, 000 in 1985. Now there are 210 million mobile phone users in the US. Studies also show that over 50 percent of children in the US own their own personal mobile phones. The number of mobile phones users has also increased throughout the world. At the beginning of 2019, the number of total users jumped to 3 billion worldwide.
When people throw their mobile phones away, they usually end up in the open air. Mobile phones include some materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium. They can go into public drinking water and food and cause people and animals health problem. About 75 percent of mobile phone users don’t throw their phones away. Instead, they prefer to keep the waste ones sitting around the house as they are not worth very much. People are also afraid that others may know their information if they sell their waste phones. Less than 20 percent of them are recycled each year.
Mobile phones have valuable materials inside. The most valuable material is gold. They can be used again after recycling. If all of the waste phones in the US are recycled, it will save enough energy to offer over 194, 000 US families electricity for one year.
One method of recycling mobile phones is to take the working parts of broken phones, then combine (使结合) them with the working parts of other used mobile phones to make one ready-to-use mobile phone. Another method of mobile phone recycling is to melt (熔化) down and separate parts of the phone, getting the valuable materials, such as gold and platinum.Plastic and glass can also be recycled from used mobile phones.

“The reason why I chose to be a director was not for shooting films but for Li Huanying,” Jia Ling told The Paper.
Li Huanying, Jia’s mother, passed away when Jia was 19. To express her sadness and regret, Jia decided to make a film named Hi, Mom, which was shown on Feb 12. Based on her personal experiences, the film describes Jia traveling back to the year 1981, when she meets her mother at a young age and tries to improve her mother’s life.
The 39-year-old never imagined that her directorial work would make history. As of Feb 23, it has taken in over 4 billion yuan, according to professional box office tracker Dengta.
Hi, Mom has received many positive reviews. Many moviegoers couldn’t help but run tears for the film’s description of the close relationship between a daughter and her mother.
“Jia’s success comes as a surprise, as the work is special. She puts her love and memories of her deceased (过世的) mother into the film and lets the viewers feel her sincerity (真诚),” Shi Chuan, a chairman of the Shanghai Film Association, told the Global Times.
Indeed, the movie’s sincerity and touching moments make up for its technical features. It has reminded internet users to celebrate and love their mothers. The Cornell Note—taking System (CNS) is a way to take notes created by Walter Pauk in the 1940s. It’s a productive way of learning. The CNS can improve the quality of your learning experience, helping you make connections and get more knowledge in the shortest time.
Now, I’d like to introduce the five Rs of the CNS to you. They’re Record, Reduce, Recite, Reflect and Review. Before you use the CNS, however, you need to divide a clean piece of paper into three parts: Cue Column (线索栏), Note-taking Column and Summary (总结). Then, it’s time to take notes with five Rs.
    ➢ Step 1: Record.
During the class, write down as many meaningful facts and ideas as you can in the Note-taking Column. Don’t use complete sentences. It’s better to use key words or some special symbols, but make sure you know what they mean. And leave a space each line so that you can add more information later.

    ➢ Step 2: Reduce.
As soon after class as possible, summarize these facts and ideas in a few words in the Cue Column and then think about questions that might appear on the exam, and then write them down.
    ➢ Step 3: Recite.
Cover the Note-taking Column with a piece of paper and study the information by asking yourself questions in the Cue Column. Then, use your own words to answer these questions out loud.
    ➢ Step 4: Reflect.
Draw out opinions from your notes and use them as a starting point for your own reflections on the course and how it relates to your other courses. Reflect on the material by asking yourself some questions. And then use complete sentences to write a summary at the bottom of your notes.
    ➢ Step 5: Review.
This step can help reduce your stress of studying for exams. If you spend 10 minutes every week on a quick review of your notes, you will keep most of what you’ve studied in mind without staying up late for it.
Don’t let learning be a stress to you. Try to master the CNS instead.
    An introduction to CNS

___11___ you start: Divide the note-taking paper into three parts
    Created by Walter Pauk in the 1940s;
Can improve the quality of your learning experience; Help you learn more and ___12___.
    5Rs

Record: Use key words or special ___13___ and write down as many facts and ideas as possible.
Reduce: summarize and consider the questions that may appear in a test.
Recite: Ask the questions without looking at the notes and answer them in your own words ___14___.
Reflect: Draw out opinions and relate it to other courses. Then write a summary.
Review: Spend 10 minutes every week to review the notes and it keeps you away from ___15___ before exams.

A man bought a donkey at the market one day and took him home to see whether he could work hard or not. Now the man owned several donkeys already and he knew each one's character very well. One of the donkeys was very strong and brave. Another was quiet but hard-working. One donkey was very lazy. Many people think that being healthy is a difficult task, but that’s not actually true!

Water also clears your skin, keeps you energized. Stop drinking unhealthy drinks like soda and juice. You still feel thirsty after drinking unhealthy drinks.
Eat breakfast. Research shows that people without breakfast actually eat more! So don’t forget the first meal of the day. The healthier your breakfast is, the more energetic you’ll feel throughout the day.
Remember that not all fats are bad for you. Good fats can be found in fish, nuts and olive oil. These are necessary to a well-balanced diet.

Taking public transport, making payments online or just walking around—these daily activities can help turn Chinn’ s deserts (沙漠) into forests if you are using Ant Forest.
Ant Forest records users’ low-carbon (低碳的) activities, taking a bus to work instead of driving, for example, and gives users “green energy”. When a user’s green energy gets high enough. Ant Forest will plant a real tree for the user. In this way, both users and Ant Forest work to tum deserts into Greenland.
Ant Forest received the Earth Award in 2019 for it encourages people to live greener lifestyles and protect the environment.
Since it was carried out in August 2016, Ant Forest has planted about 122 million trees in China’s driest areas. The trees are 112,000 hectares (公顷) in area. This makes Ant Forest China’s largest tree-planting project started by a private company.
This is only part of China’s efforts to make the Earth greener. In 1978, China began a National-level forestation project- the Three North Shelterbelt Forest Program, also known as the “Great Green Wall”. The program has seen trees planted in 13 provinces and autonomous regions (自治区) in northern China to act as windbreaks (防风林). Because of these trees, sandstorms are less common in northern cities. By the end of 2017, the forest coverage rate (覆盖率) among the areas of the project had reached 13.57%, compared to 5.05% 40 years ago.
Because of China’s success in dealing with desertification (沙漠化), the UNEP praises that the country is a good example for others to follow. “China is a successful country in greening the desert and has lessons to share with the world,” said one of the UNEP office workers.
    根据上面的短文内容填空。

In April this year, the Japanese government said it would put nuclear(核) wastewater into the sea in two years. It also said it would be safe and practical to do these. But what will happen if the wastewater enters the sea? No one knows for sure. It might be dangerous.
In 2011, a big earthquake hit Fukushima, Japan. The quake caused a tsunami (海啸). A nuclear power station was broken in the tsunami and radiation (放射物) came out. Scientists used lots of water to cool the machines. But the water carried radiation. Radiation can cause lots of diseases, such as cancer. It can even change human DNA.Japan has made huge tanks to keep the harmful water away from people. But the tanks are expensive and take up a lot of room. That’s why Japan wants to dump the water into the sea.
Japan says it will clean the wastewater before dumping it. However, not all of the radiation can be taken out. It is still harmful to humans.
The wastewater will first pollute the sea around Japan and its neighboring countries, such as China and South Korea. It will go to most of the Pacific Ocean in 57 days. And in three years, it will reach the US and Canada. The sea takes up 71% of Earth’s surface. So the wastewater will go to most parts of the world. The radiation could stay in the sea for thousands of years!
    根据文章内容完成下列各题。
36.After a serious ________ hit Fukushima in 2011, a nuclear power station was ________ in the tsunami.
37.________ the machines in the nuclear power station, scientists used plenty of water. As a result, the water was ________ by the radiation from the machines.
38.So far, the harmful water hasn’t reached people ________ the huge tanks. But they have a high price and ________ a lot of room.
39.Japan is unable to ________ all the radiation from the wastewater. That is to say, the wastewater still does ________ to humans.
40.If Japan achieves its purpose, the wastewater will pollute the sea around the US and Canada in ________ years. However, the radiation would not ________ from the sea until thousands of years.
