In the cafeteria at Hengyang No.1 Middle School in Hunan Province, new banners (条幅) are put up: Who knows that each bowl of rice is the fruit of hard toil (谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦)? Clear your plate; refuse to waste food.
This is part of a nationwide campaign to cut down on food waste in China. The cafeteria’s manager told Hengyang News that they used to waste 100kg of food every day. But this amount has dropped by 75percent, as students are encouraged to take just the amount of food they need.

Computers, smartphones, and other machines are the perfect servants. They always do what they are “told”. We usually “tell” them to do things by using a mouse or keyboard. But what if we could just talk to them normally and tell them what to do?
This type of technology, known as voice control or voice recognition (识别), has been shown in films and TV shows since the 1960s. The TV show Star Trek showed some spaceships which could reply to human voice commands (命令). The film 2001: A Space Odyssey showed a computer that human astronauts could talk to. It was mainly used to play chess and repair the astronauts’ spaceship.
On the other hand, real-world voice recognition is used for more everyday tasks. For example, Apple and Amazon made two pieces of voice recognition software (软件). They can be asked to do many things, such as setting alarms and playing music and so on.
One of the nice things about voice recognition is that it can be used when we’re on the go. When you’re driving a car or walking down the street, it’s not convenient or even dangerous to pick up your smartphone and type away on the keyboard. Voice recognition allows you to focus on whatever you’re doing at the moment while still doing other tasks.
Speech recognition software is also helpful to deaf people. It can be used to “listen” to spoken words and turn them into text that deaf people can read. Some speech recognition software can even hear words spoken in one language and then translate them into another language.
4.According to Paragraph 1, how do we usually control machines in daily life?______
    A.By using body language.
    B.By talking to them.
C.By using a mouse or keyboard.
5.When was voice recognition first shown in films and TV shows?______
    A.In the 1980s. B.In the 1970s. C.In the 1960s.
6.How does voice recognition help to keep you safe while driving a car?______
A.It helps you to focus on what you are doing.
B.It allows you to type on the keyboard more conveniently.
C.It can control your car for a short while.
7.In the last paragraph, what can we infer about the speech recognition software?______
A.It can hear words spoken in English and then translate them into Chinese.
B.It can turn text into spoken words for the blind.
C.It can help you do anything that you want to do.
8.Where do you probably read the passage?______
    A.In a movie ad.
    B.In a science magazine.
    C.In a sports magazine.

Have you ever heard of “Who knows that each bowl of rice is the fruit of hard toil (苦工)?’’ It tells us not to waste food.
As we all know, every bit of food we eat comes from hard work. It’s not easy to turn a seed (种子) into the food you can eat. Recently, to help students better understand this, the No. 4 Middle School in Huzhou, Zhejiang held an activity. Under the hot sun, hundreds of students went to a field to experience farming. With the help of others, they learned how to grow rice and pick vegetables. After the activity, they better understood how hard farming was.
Many countries are facing the food-shortage problem now. According to the UN, there are 820 million people living in hunger today. Our country used to face this problem, too. In the 1960s, because there wasn’t much food, many people even died from hunger. In 1973, Yuan Longping and his team succeeded in the development of hybrid (杂交) rice. They made great progress in solving our food-shortage problem. Many scientists like Yuan are always going out of their way to solve this problem now.
When we waste food, we waste not only food but also resources (资源) for growing, transporting and cooking the food. These all take energy, time and water. Wasting food also creates greenhouse gas. So food waste is bad for the environment, too.
    Please value what you’re eating.

Parents are often surprised at their children’s ability to use technology. A five-year-old child may easily find and use apps on a smart phone. A ten-year-old child can move up through the levels of a video game easily. Their parents may think their children were born geniuses (天 才)!
Natural geniuses, however, are not common. But your parents are right if they think you are smarter than them. Most children are born smarter than their parents. This has been proved(证明)on IQ tests around the world recently. These tests have shown that over the last 100 years, each new generation (一代人)has become smarter than the older ones. In other words, you are smarter than your parents and your parents are smarter than your grandparents.
This increase in intelligence is called the “Flynn Effect(效应)”. It was named after James Flynn. Flynn is a university professor (教授)in New Zealand. He first noticed this in 1980. According to his research, with each new generation, average (平均的)IQ scores would increase by twenty percent.
But why are people getting smarter? Flynn and many other researchers believe this has something to do with technology. New technologies have further developed our brains. They have made us think better. So we may be better at completing the missing parts of a puzzle than our parents.
But being smart doesn’t make you wise. Wisdom (智慧)comes with age and experience. A high score on a computer game will not help you solve the everyday problems of life. For that, a smart kid will turn to the wisdom of his parents and grandparents.
19.How do parents often feel about their children’s ability to use technology?______
    A.Surprised. B.Worried. C.Nervous. D.Embarrassed.
20.What has been proved on IQ tests around the world these days?______

What are the cultural differences between China and the West? You might be able to find the answer in Cao Siyu’s comics(漫画). Cao, 32, was born in Beijing, but left home at 20 and has studied and lived in the US, the UK, and France for 12 years. Having seen so many cultures, Cao wanted to use her drawing sills to show the differences she has experienced. So she created the cartoon series Tiny Eyes Comics.
“My experience shows that although travel is much easier and faster today, the distance(距离) between cultures hasn’t shortened,” Cao said. She hopes to build bridges and break down misunderstandings between different cultures. One of her cartoons shows water forms in different countries. Three glasses of water are shown. The glass of water from the US has ice; the one from France is full of sparkling water(气泡水); the one from China is steaming(冒热气的).
Cao also uses her cartoons to show different ways of thinking and social customs. During the COVID﹣19 pandemic, she used her comics to explain why Chinese people prefer to wear masks while western people don’t. “Her simple pictures have played a big part in reflecting Chinese culture,” Italian magazine Grazia reported.
Many foreign readers say that Cao’s comics help them understand China, while Chinese living abroad have felt that they are seen and understood.
She said that this voice has been the biggest motivation (动力) for her to keep creating.

Asked about the foods that sell best in the whole world, do you often hear about CocaCola and McDonald’s Big Macs from America? But think again, because the most successful worldwide food is instant noodles (方便面).
A new book called Noodle Stories that was written 55 years after the birth of the instant noodles in Japan, mentioned that there were more than 100 billion cups of instant noodles worldwide in 2012—that’s about 14 cups for every person on Earth. As for noodles themselves, they were invented more than 2,000 years ago to become a worldwide staple(主食).
______ The oldest historical mention of noodles appeared in the third century AD in China. The earliest Chinese noodles were little pieces of dough (面团) thrown into boiling water. This kind of noodles, called mianpian, are still eaten in China today. Another early mention of noodles appeared in the fifth century AD in Jerusalem.
Momofuku Ando invented instant noodles in Japan in 1958. Few people know that instant noodles play an important role in hunger and disaster (灾害) relief. It’s well-known that they are regarded as junk food, but they are a real “hunger killer”. According to an online news report, the fat in instant noodles that is mixed with the delicious soup keeps one feeling full for longer. And that helps explain why “ramen”, as they are called in Japanese, have become a staple on the world’s food aid (援助) lists.

Tony and George were painting freely. Each of them had a bottle of blue paint(油漆) and a bottle of yellow paint.
Suddenly George said, “Look, Tony, I made green!”
“How did you do it?” asked Tony.
“I put yellow paint on top of my blue paint — yellow and blue put together make green!” shouted George. Other children came around to watch and wanted to do it themselves.
This is an example of discovery learning or hands—on learning.
People remember things better when they learn them by doing. Here is an example. How will you learn to play football?
Buy a book and read about how to play football or buy a video about football? Or go to the playground and ask a person to teach you?
Which way will help you learn the game best? Learning on the playground is the best way for most people because they try the game and learn the rules as they play. They learn in a hands—on way.
Hands—on learning is good for children. The learner takes an active part in it instead of just sitting and listening. This is the way that we want our children to learn. In order to learn best, children must take an active part in hands—on activities every day. Some good examples of hands—on activities are working puzzles, painting, playing simple board games together and so on.

The International Climate Champions (ICC) project began in 2007. It gives young people of school age a chance to speak publicly on climate change and to encourage action to reduce its effects. Each country involved selects three teenagers to be Climate Champions, who take part in local and international activities.
Climate Champion Irene Sanna lives on the Italian island of Sardinia. Irene is interested in solar energy, and also believes that Sardinia should use the waves around its coast to produce electricity. That would reduce the need to import oil and gas for lighting, heating and cooking. “Energy conservation is our future. We must make plans to save our coast, which still has no pollution. We must protect the animals, birds and fish in danger from global warming. And we must recycle.”
Chinese student Ding Yinghan is the Beijing Climate Champion. Ding feels it is unfair to say that just one country-his own-is causing climate change. He says the air pollution that leads to global warming comes from many parts of the world, including poorer countries that are now growing more quickly. He believes the only way to prevent the situation getting even worse is for rich and poor countries to work together.
Sophia Angelis, a junior student in Lake Arrowhead, California, is a US Champion. She’s against young people’s general lack of interest in politics and feels they need to discuss the problems that really matter to their generation. She has written about the need for action on poverty and her articles have been published in her local newspaper. Sophia strongly believes that climate change is an important issue for her generation. For her, changes in the way teenagers behave are an important way of influencing choices that are made by parents.
In 2008, the Climate Champions attended the International Conference of Environment Ministers in the Japanese city of Kobe. At present, 13 countries are involved in the ICC, and more countries are expected to join soon.
13.Different Climate Champions are mentioned in this article except the one from ________.
    A.China B.Japan C.Italy D.America
14.What does Irene say about the sea?
A.The water near the island is now dirty. B.Many types of fish have disappeared.
C.There is oil and gas under the water. D.It can provide power for the island.
15.What does Ding believe about the climate change?
A.It is certain to get much worse. B.Air pollution does not cause it.
C.It is wrong to blame China for it. D.It is caused only by rich countries.
16.Sophia thinks that young people should ________.
A.publish their own newspapers B.change old people’s habits
C.follow the example of their parents D.avoid talking about politics
17.In which section of the newspaper can we most probably find this article?

① It is common to surf the Internet at home now. However, a recent survey showed over 90% of parents are not clear what websites their children visit. I strongly believe that a training project should be started to help parents to improve their internet and computer skills. Then they can better monitor and guide their children.
② Providing training would get parents to pay more attention to their children’s online activities. This is one advantage. If parents had a better understanding of the internet and websites, they would see the need to make sure that their children use it properly and responsibly.
③ Providing training to parents would allow parents to help their children with their schoolwork as well. These days, some homework of online courses needs to be done on computer. If parents have poor computer skills, they will be of little or no help with the homework. That can make parents very upset. Some people argue that it is good that students can work independently on computers. However, it is clear that students, especially young students often need this kind of home support.
④ Improving parents’ Internet and computer skills might also be a good way for parents to improve their relationships with their children. These days, children spend a lot of their free time on computers. If parents want to be part of their free time, they need to see that playing on computers can be a fun family activity. Joining their children can help parents bridge the gap between them and their children.
⑤ Most people believe that children need to be helped and guided to use the Internet in a proper and responsible way. Therefore, training is extremely important.

These years people show all kinds of things on the Internet—good food, nice clothes, wonderful vacations and so on. Now showing the number of steps is becoming popular, too. Why?
People are finding it important to be in good health. To keep healthy, many people go to work on foot. When they start walking, they open the step counter app in their phones to record how many steps they walk that day. After a day’s walk, some people show the number on WeChat or Weibo. This can make them learn from each other and keep exercising.

“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”. Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong…” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they want to finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I’ve to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: “Someone’s at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s part of the game of language.
34.When a person disagrees with someone, it is polite to say “________”
A.You are wrong. I disagree. B.I’m not sure.
    C.I’m sure I disagree. D.I don’t agree with you.

C.I have to go now. D.I don’t want to talk any more.

    A.giving an excuse B.hurting someone’s feelings
C.talking to a person at the door D.going to another place
37.The rule of the game of language is probably ________.
A.“Always say what you mean.” B.“Don’t disagree with people.”

Earth is about 75% water. But most of that water is salty. Only about 2.5% of Earth’s water is fresh water — the kind we can drink and that plants need to grow. Much of Earth’s fresh water is locked up in ice caps. In all, just 1% of Earth’s water can be used for washing, drinking, cooking, and watering crops.
In some countries, people don’t usually worry about having enough clean, fresh water. People just turn on a faucet(水龙头) and there it is. In some countries, though, water is scarce(稀缺的). People in Africa, Asia, and Latin America have serious water shortages.
What causes water shortages? In some places, well water is being used faster than wells can refill. In other places, droughts — long periods without enough rain—mean there is not enough water. Some parts of the United States are now having water problems because of drought. Evaporation(蒸发) is a big problem in some parts of the world. When the sun shines on water, the water turns into vapor(水蒸气) and rises into the air. The water is gone before it can do any good. The ground becomes dry. Nothing can grow. Not all fresh water is safe to drink. Water in wells, lakes, and rivers may have bad things that cause illness. When water is dirty, it can be dangerous to drink. Dirty water is making children sick. It is dangerous to get a drink or even wash your hands.
But the news isn’t all bad. Mansoor Ali, who works for the United Nations, says water problems can be solved. Kids and adults are learning how to protect water and how to use it wisely.

At the moment of 9:43 a. m, on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2020, at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center (卫星发射中心) in Sichuan Province, the last satellite of the third-generation network (第三代导航系统) was sent into space. It is the 55th member in the family of BeiDou. It belongs to China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS北斗卫星导航系统). So far, 59 satellites, including the first four test ones, have been launched from Xichang. With the development of China, we have already owned three other famous satellite launch centers—Jiuquan, Taiyuan and Wenchang.
After a period of tests in space, this new satellite has started to work with other Beidou satellites together. It is designed to work for at least 12 years. So far, China has completed the third-generation network of China’s BDS. It was a new milestone in the nation’s space research work.
