I visited Elba last June, joining Mary and John on a bicycling vacation. They made the arrangements for the car, hotel and bicycles. I studied the history of the island, which of course particularly features Napoleon.
Napoleon picked Elba as a place for peace when he was forced to give up the throne (王位)as Emperor of France in 1814. Far from being a prison island, Elba is beautiful with towering mountains, thick forests and sweeping bays and beaches.
It is also an island filled with treasure. Very early on this island, locals discovered rich deposits of iron. Soon outsiders, too, discovered the iron and 150 other valuable minerals on this little piece of land. Long before Etruscans and other Greeks set foot on it, Dorians had moved in by the tenth century BC and were mining the island. The Romans ruled next, obtaining the minerals and building grand houses overlooking the sea. From the twelfth century to the nineteenth, the island was traded back and forth and was passed to France in 1802. Then
came Napoleon, the new ruler of Elba.
I was eager to visit his house in Portoferraio. The Emperor lived with his court and his mother, but his wife, Marie Louise had ensconced herself in the splendid Viennese palace of her father, Emperor of Austria. She lived safely there and showed little interest in visiting her husband in his mini-kingdom. Apparently, Napoleon wasn't troubled much by this. He was too busy riding everywhere on horseback, building roads, modernizing agriculture and, above all, sharpening his tiny army and navy into readiness for his escape.
In the formal gardens behind the house it seemed to me that I could imagine the exiled (流放的)conqueror's anxious thoughts. He might gaze over where I stood now, toward the lighthouse of the Stella fort, the sandy bay, and across it, the green mountains of the Tuscan coast. Napoleon spent only ten months here before making his victorious return to France and the throne.
24. What did the author do for the visit to Elba?
A. He did some research on Elba. B. He arranged transportation to Elba.
C. He booked accommodation on Elba. D. He planned bicycling routes on Elba.
25. Who might be the earliest outsiders to Elba according to the text?
A. Napoleon and his army. B. Etruscans and other Greeks.
C. Romans. D. Dorians.
26. Which can replace the underlined word "ensconced" in paragraph 4?
A. Hurt. B. Settled. C. Treated. D. Limited.
27. What came to the author's mind during his visit to Napoleon's gardens?
A. Beautiful surroundings. B. Terrible living conditions.
C. Napoleon's ambition to regain power. D. Hardship of Napoleon's return to France.

The history of steam power goes all the way back to the 1700s. At the time, steam was mainly used to power many different machines and helped fuel the Industrial Revolution. Over the years, steam was replaced by other fuel systems to power everything from homes to cars and industrial equipment.
Now, some American scientists are developing steam power for one of today's most highly technical activities? space exploration.
The scientists are developing and testing a space robot model named The World Is Not Enough, which they call WINE for short. The spacecraft is designed to travel repeatedly between space rocks called asteroids and planets throughout the solar system.
The spacecraft is designed to land on these space objects. It has tools to search for and collect water that might be below the surface. WINE can then heat the water to create steam to power the spacecraft to its next space stop. WINE is equipped to gather and use solar energy as well.
The company Honeybee Robotics built the model that the researchers recently tested. The UCF team provided a reproduction of asteroid material for the test, as well as computer modeling used to design WINE.
Phil Metzger is a planetary (行星的)research scientist at UCF. Before joining the university, he spent nearly 30 years working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He worked three years on the latest project, developing the technology necessary for creating a working model.
Metzger said in a statement the test was a successful demonstration of the spacecraft's abilities. He reported it was able to dig into the simulated asteroid material and collect water. It then produced steam fuel that permitted the spacecraft to complete its own launch. Metzger said WINE spacecraft could keep traveling to many different asteroids and planets. They could carry out experiments before refueling and launching to the next stop. He said such exploration activities could be carried out anywhere there is water and the right gravitational conditions.
The scientists believe the technology could open up limitless space exploration. Currently, interplanetary space exploration trips must end when the spacecraft runs out of fuel.
28. What was steam mainly used to power in the 1700s?
A. Cars. B. Homes.
C. Different machines. D. Electrical equipment.
29. What can be learned about WINE?
A. It's a short space robot. B. It can find and collect water.
C. It's a non-stop spacecraft. D. It is only powered by steam.
30. What do we know about Phil Metzger?
A. He thought highly of the test of WINE.
B. He spent 30 years developing the spacecraft.
C. He thought space exploration could be done anywhere.
D. He was a planetary research scientist before joining UCF.
31. What's the main idea of the text?
A. A space robot will be developed and tested.
B. Steam plays an important role in every field.
C. A newly-made spacecraft never runs out of fuel.
D. Steam power will be used for space exploration.

It's natural for parents to want to praise their children, but offering this praise could actually backfire, according to New Science.
In the study, researchers at Michigan State University looked at 123 children who were about 7. The team assessed (评估)the children to determine whether they had a "growth mindset" (believing that you can work harder to get smarter), or a "fixed mindset" (believing that your intelligence is unable to change). They then asked the children to complete a fast-paced computer accuracy task while their brain activity was recorded.
Based on the data they collected, the researchers concluded that children with a "growth mindset" were much more likely to have a larger brain response after making a mistake, and in turn were more likely to improve their performance by paying closer attention to the task after making an error.
While previous research has shown that people with a “fixed mindset" don't want to admit they've made a mistake, this study found that children with a fixed mindset were able to "bounce back" after making an error, but only if they gave their full attention to the mistake. "The main implication (暗示)here is that we should pay close attention to our mistakes and use them as opportunities to learn," study author Hans Schroder told Science Daily.
For parents, the lessons are clear; If a child hands you an A+ test, don't say, "You're so smart! “Instead say, "Wow, that studying really paid off!" or "You clearly mastered this material—way to go!" Note the effort, not the intelligence.
Second, focus on using errors to work together and learn. "Many parents and teachers avoid addressing children's mistakes, telling them 'It's OK, you'll get it the next time,, without giving them the opportunity to figure out what went wrong," Dr Schroder says. "Instead, it's better to reassure the children that mistakes happen, and to pay attention and work to figure out where and how they made the mistakes.”
32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "backfire" in paragraph 1?
A. Make a loud noise. B. Leave a good impression.
C. Have an opposite result. D. Produce an explosion.
33. According to the text, which means a “growth mindset"?
A. Mary believes her mistakes are made by chance.
B. Tom manages to correct every mistake by heart.
C. John keeps an idea that he has a good gift for studying.
D. Lily thinks she can get A+ without any effort.
34. If your children get the best marks in a test, you should__.
A. praise them with some delicious food and money
B. remark them to be cleverer than other students
C. confirm their effort that they had made for the test
D. believe that they are honest and smart
35. What should parents do with the child's mistakes according to Dr Schroder?
A. Avoid talking with the child about the mistakes.
B. Compare his / her mistakes with others' and criticize him / her.
C. Ignore the mistakes and believe he / she will do better.
D. Analyze the mistakes with their child patiently.

Dear Rose,
I’m quite glad that you take great interest in traditional Chinese food and now I’m writing to introduce you a popular Chinese food—jiaozi.
As we all know, jiaozi, one of the most typical foods during the Spring Festival, is regarded as a symbol of reunion. The way of making it is no less fantastic. Firstly, we mix the flour with water to make the dough. Next, we cut the dough into small pieces, and roll them into wrappers. Finally, we wrap the fillings and boil jiaozi.
It’s easy to learn, isn’t it?Just have a try.
Yours, Li Hua
