Many years ago, my mother read from the book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey to me. I remember as if it were yesterday, hearing her voice at my side on a cold wintry night. My mother’s voice changed my world.
Long before I could read on my own, she shared with me the strength and beauty of McCloskey’s language a story of a little girl and her mother out in nature, co-existing with a mother bear and her own baby. The power of the story, of language and of my mother all came together. And it happened many times after that, over and over. The read aloud made me a reader.
Years later, I was reading aloud a picture book to a small child in a classroom. His life, so far, had not been easy. His childhood was troubled by poverty and loneliness. In that moment, in the joy of the read aloud, he had an idea that started something big.
What he said was this: “Mrs. Allyn, let’s make sure everyone knows how good this feels. Let’s have a holiday for the read aloud.” Therefore, my organization, LitWorld, created a grassroots movement World Read Aloud Day in 2010 to honor this young boy’s wish for everyone to be able to have a read aloud every day.
Since the day he shared that good idea with us, World Read Aloud Day has become a worldwide event reaching over one million people in more than 65 countries around the world. This year we are over 600 cities strong, a number that is growing every day.
Children who grow up as readers become engaged citizens of the global world, and every child deserves the right to read. When I say that reading aloud will change the world, I know it sounds simple. But one of the many great things about giving kids access to the power of stories and sharing them together is that it is simple. It is also cheap and easily done. And the impact is huge.
56. How did the author’s parent change her life?
A. By reading aloud to her. B. By listening to her reading.
C. By buying many books for her. D. By encouraging her to read aloud.
57. According to Paragraph 3, the author was probably the little boy’s .
A. mother B. teacher C. best friend D. favorite writer
58. What does the small child’s idea in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. To start a holiday. B. To reduce poverty.
C. To found LitWorld. D. To overcome loneliness.
59. What can we know about World Read Aloud Day from Paragraph 5?
A. Its origin. B. Its future. C. Its purpose. D. Its development.
60. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Sticking to reading isn’t easy.
B. Reading gives a high rate of return.
C. Reading aloud isn’t actually simple.
D. Kids should try to change the world.

American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.
First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don't say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say "I dunno" instead of "I don't know." Or they may say "Whaddya say?" instead of "What did you say?" However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
Also, some letters have different sounds. For example, the Americans say the "'a" in half like the "a" in cat. But the British say the "a" in half like the "o" in soft. Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you "'phone them up". In America, you "'give them a call". When you are saying goodbye in England you might say "Cheerio! "In America you might say "See you later. "
There're also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb "do" when they ask a question. They say "Do you have a storybook? " But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say "Have you a storybook?"
All these differences can be confusing if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.
61.What does the author think of the differences between American and British English?
A. American and British English are the same languages.
B. American and British English are quite different.
C. Although American English came from the British English, there are still some important differences.
D. There are slight differences between American and British English.
62. What does the underlined word "separately" mean?
A. together. B. one by one. C. in common. D. in different ways.
63. What does the underlined sentence "The same thing is true of some British words in America. "' mean ?
A. The words of American and British English are the same.
B. The spelling of American and British English are the same.
C. Although they don't sound the same, the words are the same.
D. Some British English words are not used in American English.
64. How many ways are used to talk about the differences between American and British English in the passage?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
65. Why has English changed over time?
A. Geography plays an important role in the changing.
B. Different people have different living habits.
C. Different people have different jobs.
D. The income of the native English speakers is different.
D
How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child — things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents, he is not so free to do what he wishes to do;he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
66. According to the second paragraph, the writer thinks that _______.
A. only children are interested in life
B. life for a child is comparatively easy
C. a child is always loved whatever he does
D. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
67. After a child grows up, he ________.
A. will have little time playing
B. has to be successful in finding a job
C. can still ask for help in time of trouble
D. should be able to take care of himself
68. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People are often satisfied with their life.
B. Life is less interesting for old people.
C. Adults are freer to do what they want to do.
D. Adults should no longer rely on others.
69. The main idea of the passage is _________.
A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C. childhood is the more enjoyable time in one’s life
D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life
70. The paragraph following this passage will most probably discuss _________.
A. examples of successful young men
B. how to build up one’s position in society

第一节:阅读表达 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题.
Some years ago industries had more freedom than they now,and they did not need to be as careful as they must today. They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed. They took little notice of the health and safety of the people who worked for them.Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them and conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers.
Of course, sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which showed the need for changes. Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes produced information which governments could not ignore. At such times, there were inquiries into the causes of the disasters or the problems.New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquiries; however, the new rules came too late to protect the people who died or who became seriously ill.
Today many governments have special departments which protect customers and workers. In the U.S,for example, there is a department which tests new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems. It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow.Another department controls the foods and drugs that companies sell.A third department looks at the places where people work, and then reports any companies that are breaking the laws which protect the health and safety of workers.Of course, new government departments and new laws cannot prevent every accident or illness, but they are having some good results. Our work places are safer and cleaner than before. The planes and cars which we use for travel are better.Producers are thinking more about the safety and health of the people who buy and use their products.

Dear Chris,
Good news for you! Traditional Chinese Culture Exhibition is due to be held in the City Museum from 11 December to 25 December. A wide range of Chinese art forms will be presented, varying from embroidery to calligraphy. Since you’re intrigued by the Chinese paper cutting recently, I sincerely invite you to the exhibition.
As you know, paper cutting is the perfect combination of designing, paining and skills. With the diverse colors and the varied shapes, it enjoys both practical value and appreciation value. In the exhibition, some famous artists and even experts will cut the paper on the spot, and with their help and guidance, you can give it a try in person to make images out of paper. Apart from that, we can also make some friends with the same interest who may help us have a deeper insight into the traditional Chinese culture.
I’m sure it’ll be an unforgettable and rewarding experience. Looking forward to your reply.
