    Lesson 11: To China, with Love

    设计说明

    首先用医生正在做手术的图片,让学生自由谈论以下问题:怎样才能成为一名好医生? 为什么一些医生去贫困地区工作? 由此激发学生对这一职业的思考。接着利用思维导图复习Lesson 10的课文。呈现本课生词,并让学生熟读,接下来,结合句子,让学生在语境中理解生词的含义,并进一步了解本课介绍的主人公诺尔曼白求恩。让学生听课文并找出重要的短语,再把短语翻译出来。通过读课文,让学生进入Let’s Do It! No. 1的练习,判断所给句子正确与否。要求学生细读课文,并回答问题,完成有关白求恩的清单。然后,让学生练习重要词汇,完成 Let’s Do It! No. 3的练习。另外,通过结对练习及写作任务,让学生谈论并写出他们眼中的伟人。通过各种活动的设置,既能锻炼学生解决问题的能力,又能培养他们的高尚品格。最后,处理本课剩余的练习题,巩固本节课所学内容

    教学目标

    通过本课节的教学,学生达成以下目标:

    1. 知识目标

    掌握单词:remain, decision, worst, condition, government, medical        

    接触单词:graduate, anti-, aid, operate

    短语:T.B., remain in use, be well known for, Anti-Japanese War, make a decision, first aid, day after day, set up

    2. 能力目标

    (1)认识国际友人诺尔曼·白求恩,知道他在抗日战争期间,为中国人民做出的巨大贡献。

    (2)能用英语描述伟人的故事。

    3. 情感目标

    培养学生的国际主义精神。

    重点难点

    1. 重点本节课重点单词、短语。

    2. 难点能用英语描述伟人的故事。

    PPT 课件;医生工作的图片;与本课节相关的音频

    教学过程

    Step 1  Warming up

    1. Free talk.

      Show the class a picture of doctors doing operations.

    Say: What makes a good doctor? Why do some doctors go to work in poor areas?

     2. Homework check.

      Show the mind map to the class and get the students to retell the passage in Lesson 10.

       

    Step 2  Presentation 

    1. Teach the new words graduate, remain, anti-, decision, aid, worst, condition, operate, government, and medical.

    2. Then get some of the students to read the words in front of the class.

    3. Use some words to show some information about Norman Bethune.

    1. Norman Bethune graduated from the University of Toronto. 

    2. He invented tools that remain in use today.

    3. He did his best to help the Chinese people in the Anti-Japanese War.

    4. In 1938, he made a decision to go to northern China.

    5. He showed people how to give first aid.

    6. He worked hard in the worst possible conditions to help others.

    7. He operated for long hours.

    8. The government set up Bethune Medical School.

    4. Let the students work in groups and find out the meaning of the sentences.

    Step 3  Listening and finding

    1. Get the class to listen to the passage and find the main phrases.

    2. Then play the recording for the class to listen.

    3. After listening, ask them to translate the phrases into Chinese.

    Step 4  Reading and writing

    1. Get the class to look through the sentences in Lets Do It! No. 1. Make sure the class can understand them. Then ask the class to read the passage in order to find the answers.

    1. Bethune was an American doctor.

    2. He finished university in 1916.

    3. He came to northern China to help people in the war.

    4. The Chinese government set up a school to remember him.

    2. Elicit answers from the class.

    Step 5  Careful reading

    Task 1:

    1. Read and answer.

    2. Elicit answers by asking individual students to read the sentences out.

    national Peace Hospital in Shijiazhuang.

    Task 2: Read and complete. (Lets Do It! No. 2)

    3. Who was the first on the list of rich-in-soul people in China in 2010?

    4. What was the cause of Bethune’s death?

    Step 8  Digging in

    T: Did you know that Bethune was not only an excellent doctor, but also an inventor and a political activist? He invented medical instruments and proposed reforms of medical care and health services in Canada. Now, try to find more facts about great people.

    Step 9  Pair work

    1. Ask the students to work in pairs and discuss: Who do you think is rich-in-soul? Talk about him/her with your partner.

    2. Give them a sample:

    A: Who do you think is rich-in-soul in China?

    B: I think…

    A: Why do you think so?

    B: Oh, he/she is awesome! Because he/she…

    Step 10  Writing

    1. Let them write an article about great people. The title is I want to be just like him/her .

    2. Give them some tips:

    1. Choose one person that is rich-in-soul.

    2. Tell us what you can learn from him/her.

    3. Tell us the reason why you want to be like him/her.

    Step 11  Language points

    1. In 1916, Norman Bethune graduated from the University of Toronto. 1916诺尔曼·白求恩从多伦多大学毕业。

    graduate v. 毕业

    graduate from... 从……毕业

    My brother graduated from Harvard last year.

    去年,我哥哥毕业于哈佛大学。

    2. He also invented tools that remain in use today.

    他还发明了今天仍然在使用的工具。

    remain v. 仍然是;保持不变    

    remain是连系动词,后接形容词、名词或介词短语等作表语。remain通常不用于进行时。remain in use意为“仍在使用”。

    The three men remained silent. 这三个人保持沉默。

    These machines remain in use. 这些机器仍在使用。

    3. In 1938, he made a decision to go to northern China because he knew many people were dying in the war. 1938年,他决定去中国的北部,因为他知道在战争中很多人正濒临死亡。

    decision  n.决定

    make a decision做决定     make a decision to do sth. 决定做某事

    Have you made a decision? 你做决定了吗?

    We made a decision to go there on foot. 我们决定步行去那儿。

    4. People remember how hard he worked day after day in the worst possible conditions to help others. 人们记得他日复一日地在最糟糕的条件下努力工作来帮助他人。

    (1) day after day 日复一日   强调动作的重复性

    day by day 一天一天地       强调动作的逐渐性

    The nurse looked after the patient day after day.

    这位护士日复一日地照顾这位病人。

    Day by day, he became better after the operation.

    手术后,他一天天好了起来。

    (2) worst 最坏的;最糟的       此处为形容词bad的最高级。

    Its the worst restaurant that Ive been to. 这是我去过的最糟糕的餐馆。

    拓展worst 还可作副词badly的最高级,意为“最坏地;最糟地”,作状语。

    Who did worst in the exam? 这次考试谁做得最糟?

    5. To remember him, the government set up Bethune Medical School and Bethune International Peace Hospital in Shijiazhuang. 为了纪念他,政府在石家庄成立了白求恩医学院和白求恩国际和平医院。

    (1) to remember him 为了纪念他 此处to remember him是动词不定式短语作目的状语。    

    To remember him, we have dragon boat races.

    为了纪念他,我们举行龙舟比赛。

    I save money to buy a computer. 我省钱为了买一台电脑。

    (2) set up 建立;设立;创办    

    指具体或抽象事物的建造或建立。

    They raised a lot of money to set up a new school.

    他们筹集了很多钱来建立一所新学校。

    In September 2006, he set up a tea company.

    20069月,他创办了一家茶叶公司。
