M6 Unit 2 What is happiness to you()-2022年高考英语一轮复习讲练测(新高考江苏)一、阅读理解阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。A(2021·浙江高三月考)Our brain doesnt know how to be happy, or even content. It simply lacks the genetic instructions to carry out that task. It knows how to do a million other less important things, from writing a letter to maintaining our balance; from appreciating the music of Bach to smelling a rose, but if you ask the brain to be happy, it simply doesnt know how to respond. This is because the genetic code is only concerned with survival and reproduction, which happiness does not necessarily have anything to do with, and therefore belongs in a different realm. Nature doesn't want us to always feel content and satisfied, let alone happy, as this would lower our guard against possible threats to our survival.Happiness, as the Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes put it, is like a feather flying in the air. It flies light, but not for very long. It is so elusive that it has also been compared to a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you, according to 19th-century American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. In any case, what is clear is that happiness is, at best, fleeting (飞逝的) and inconstant. In this blog, we will look at the myth of happiness from many perspectives and, in the process, we will touch on topics such as happy personalities, the unhappy workings of the brain, evolution, dreams, and even fairy tales. I explore all these issues in detail in my book, which shares its title with this blog. Happiness is a crucial concept. We spend all of our lives pursuing it, so it deserves a very careful analysis. We are determined by our biological design to experience mixed and messy emotions. But the silver lining is the knowledge that having difficult emotions doesnt represent a personal failure. The inevitable unhappiness that we all suffer from time to time is not a shortcoming that demands urgent repair. Far from it. This unhappiness is, in fact, what makes us human.1.Why does our brain lack the genetic instructions to be happyA. Because being happy is less important than appreciating and creating art.B. Because happiness has little to do with the continuation of a species.C. Because we tend to be more aware of the threats when we are unhappy.D. Because feeling good isnt one of our concerns in living a life.2.What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 most probably meanA. Difficult to achieve  B. Easy to expose  C. Unable to explain D. Likely to remain3.What can we learn from the passage?A. We should make happiness our top concern no matter what.B. Negative emotions always require immediate attention.C. Social failures are more likely to be troubled by negative feelings.D. We should accept difficult emotions as a natural part of life.B(2021·南昌市八一中学高三模拟)The secret to happiness is keeping busy, research has found.Keeping the mind occupied with tasksno matter how meaninglesskeeps off negative emotions, the study found. However, the bad news is that humans are seemingly born to be lazy in order to save energy, according to Professor Christoper Hsee, a behavioral scientist at Chicago University. In a study, 98 students were asked to complete two surveys. After they had completed the first, they were made to wait 15 minutes to receive the next one. They were given a choice of either handing in the first survey nearby or at a more distant location they had to walk to. Whichever option they chose, they received a chocolate bar. It turned out that approximately two-thirds(68 students)chose the lazy option. Those who had taken the walk reported feeling happier than those who had stayed put.Prof. Hsee concluded that keeping busy helped keep people happy. He said the findings, reported in the journal Psychological Science, had policy implications.Governments may increase the happiness of idle citizens by having them build bridges that are actually useless, he proposed. At the individual level, he advised, Get up and do something. Anything. Even if there really is no point to what you are doing, you will feel better for it. He added, Incidentally, thinking deeply or engaging in self-reflection counts as keeping busy, too.You do not need to be running around. You just need to be engaged, either physically or mentally.4.Keeping busy can make people happy because________.A. it can help people get rid of laziness   B. it can make people sleep betterC. it can help get rid of negative emotions   D. it can give people a sense of achievement5.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. The finding may contribute to politics.B. The officials have taken Prof. Hsees advice.C. In the study half students handed in the first survey nearby.D. Governments can increase citizens happiness by building bridges.6.What can we infer from the passage?A. Everybody is born to be happy.B. Only by keeping working all the time can you gain happiness.C. Prof. Hsees finding was published in Psychological Science.D. Keeping busy goes against human nature.7.What is the authors purpose in writing this passage?A. To explain what happiness is.     B. To advise people not to sit around.C. To advise people to do what they like to.  D. To show people how to take life correctly.C(2021·四川高三二模)On a scale of 0 to 10, Id say my happiness ranks at about 6. Im glad to know Im a 6, because, as a famous management saying puts it, You can't manage what you dont measure. If you want to improve an aspect of your life, you need to be able to assess progress toward your goal-and that means measuring it. The goal of this column is to help you manage and improve your happiness. A number of people have asked me whether quantitative happiness measures are really accurate and reliable-and its a reasonable question. So lets take a look behind the curtain. But not just for intellectual curiosity; as you will see, understanding the measurement of happiness can itself make you better at improving your own well-being-and avoid some critical errors. The best method scientists have to understand with confidence how something affects something else is a randomized, controlled trial. Think of the tests currently under way to find a vaccine for COvID-19. They take a long time because the drug companies with trial vaccines are conducting experiments that randomly assign people to a treatment group they get the vaccine and a control group(they get a placebo), and then waiting to seif the drug is effective and safe by comparing the two groups after enough time has passed. In the research on happiness, this usually isnt possible. Want to know if people are truly happiest in Denmark, as some studies suggest, and test it with a randomized experiment? You would need to randomly take two groups out of their homes, move one group to Copenhagen, and the other to, say, Dayton, Ohio- but make sure they think it might be Copenhagen and never get the truth. Follow up a few years later to see who is happiest. Obviously, thats ridiculous. So with randomized controlled trials largely not available to them, happiness researchers instead rely on self-reported happiness surveys, where large groups of people anonymously report their levels of life satisfaction. Then, the researchers use fairly complex statistical techniques to mimic(模拟)a controlled experiment in order to show how different aspects of peoples lives affect-or at least are associated with-their happiness.8.What does the underlined word it in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?A. An aspect of life  B. Ones goal   C. Happiness   D. Progress.9.Why is the test of CovID-19 vaccine mentioned in Paragraph 3?A. To introduce a latest medical breakthrough.B. To show the difficulty in finding the vaccine.C. To illustrate the process of randomized experiments.D. To prove the impossibility of randomized researches on happiness.10.Why is it hard to conduct research on happiness with randomized experiments?A. The experiment takes a long time.    B. It is difficult to analyze the data collected.C. It is impossible to carry out the process strictly. D. The subjects are unwilling to share their feelings.11.Where is this text taken from?A. A magazine   B. A diary   C. A science report  D. A textbook.D(2021·黑龙江实验中学高三月考)Happiness is an abstract concept. When one thinks of a typical happy person, smiling, laughing and cheering are what usually comes to mind. However, if people stop smiling or laughing, it doesnt necessarily mean that they are unhappy. Happiness has many different levels, and it is difficult to place the word in one concrete category. Many people believe as people grow older, they will feel more happiness. However, I just find they are not always so. When asking my twelve-year-old sister what made her happy, she initially told me that sleeping made her happy, and then she looked at me for a reaction. When I had none, she changed her answer to food, then to fashion, and then finally to family. Each time she glanced at me, looking for affirmation(肯定)that she had given a right answer. My younger cousin, who is even younger than my sister, gave me an answer that surprised me. It wasnt eating candy or watching TV that made her happy. It was love. Considering the clear differences between my sister and cousin in their answers, I came to see that age doesnt always largely contribute to happiness.Asking my grandmother what brings her happiness, she immediately answered her family without hesitation. This is something I expected, as my grandma is always a family-centered person. This also aligns with her culture, being from Italy and growing up during the 50s, where family values were at its highest point in society.Asking myself this question, I think carefully about my answers. Sure, my family, friends and pets make me happy, but so do reading, writing and watching movies. This is why I have come to the conclusion that I have no answer to my own question. There is no one single thing that makes me the happiest, because, like everybody, my mood depends on many factors. Happiness depends on external factors, as well as ones personality and age. This is why I have come to the conclusion that the journey of happiness cannot truly be defined, and that there isnt one thing above all that makes everyone the happiest.12.What do we know about happiness from Paragraph 1?A. It is pursued by nearly all people.B. Its difficult to describe it with words.C. Its highest level is often expressed with laughing.D. It may have nothing to do with ones expressions.13.Comparing her sisters and cousins answers, the author realized that ________.A. happiness comes from very small things  B. age wont always bring people happinessC. little kids can sometimes give us inspiration  D. some abstract things can make people happier14.What does the underlined phrase aligns with in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A. Is consistent with  B. Is beneficial to  C. Breaks away from D. Gets out of15.What conclusion does the author draw about happiness?A. Happiness is hard to achieve.     B. Happiness is determined by many factors.C. The happiest people are often open-minded.  D. Ones family gives him the most happiness.二、七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(2021·江西高三二模)If winning the lottery may not make us happy, what will?
