China’s first panda-themed tourist train left Chengdu Railway Station for Zunyi, Guizhou Province on March 28th.
The three-day trip costs 1,280 yuan, including food, accommodation (住宿) and tickets to places of interest in Guizhou.
Serving as a mobile star-rated hotel, the train is filled with giant pandas’ pictures both inside and outside and can carry 252 passengers. It has 8 sleeping cars, a dining car and a recreation car. The sleeping cars have rooms for two or four passengers, and each room has a washroom with a toilet and a shower. The dining car, besides serving local food, can also be used as a meeting room if needed. The recreation car provides a place where passengers can sing, dance and play mahjong (麻将).
The mahjong room might be the biggest attraction(吸引力) for passengers from Sichuan. There’s a famous joke — a passenger on a plane to Chengdu can sleep soundly, only to be woken up by the sound of mahjong played in the city before landing. In fact, Chengdu is well-known for its love of mahjong as well as other attractions, such as the giant panda, Sichuan opera and Sichuan food. “So it’s no surprise that passengers will be able to play mahjong on a train leaving Chengdu,” Zhong Jun, from Meishan, Sichuan, said during a trial run (测试运行) of the train on March 24.

Last week was Road Safety Week at Jason’s school. All the students had to take part in a talk on road safety which was given by a police officer. The following is what the police officer said.
“Most traffic accidents shouldn’t happen. They happen because people are careless. A frequent cause of traffic accidents is speed. Some people drive too quickly. This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid (避免) hitting other vehicles (车辆) or people. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk.”
“It’s not only drivers who cause accidents, however. People on foot-pedestrians, and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.
“Do any of you ride a bike? Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren’t any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.”
