M: Minerva Public Library staff look forward to seeing students again this fall, and are happy to help them find library materials for schoolwork or for their own enjoyment. However, during COVID-19, there are new library rules to help ensure the safety of library staff, adult readers, and students. All students are required to wear masks while in the library, and food and drinks are not permitted. Seating is very limited and, in order to maintain social distancing, students are not allowed to sit on the floor in public areas of the building. Library occupancy is limited and, once that limit is reached, additional readers can’t come into the building. Because of these limitations, the library can’t be an after-school student hangout or a waiting room for rides, and parents should make other arrangements for their children. The library appreciates the cooperation of parents, caregivers, and students in following these rules to keep the library a safe and welcoming place for all readers.

Cikgu Azam worked in an IT department. At the same time, he had a side job where he prepared activities for school children with special needs.
In 2007, during a program, he succeeded in helping a boy with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). “While I was assisting him, I could see the tears of joy coming from his parents who were there with us as well,” he said. “If you had more expert knowledge, you’d help more people,” his friends told him. With that, he went back to school to get a degree in special education.
In 2009, he became a special education teacher in a school. Trained to help students with cerebral palsy, when he came to the school in the first year, he was surprised to learn that he would also be teaching blind students.
However, he did not back down in the face of such pressure, Cikgu took the time to educate himself on what would best help his students.
“It’s disappointing to see they are so used to their closed environment. It’s not because they are disabled, but because they don’t have the courage to explore the outside world that has caused them to be depressed.” He changed this by helping them run, simply putting his hands on their shoulders to guide them. One of his students, Nur Yusrina Alisya, won several awards in sporting events.
But as he’s gotten older, it’s difficult to keep up with them. “So, one day, I saw one student pushing a foldable trolley (推车) and the idea suddenly came to mind,” he said. Ever since then, Cikgu has made it his mission to create an even better device. He’s built Caballus RAFVI which is named after a blind but brave horse. “My students need it so they can participate in sporting activities. I’ll try to improve it,” he said. “I’m going to stick with my job though I’m getting older.”
24. What made Cikgu get a degree in special education?
A. The IT department’s requirements.
B. His success in helping a boy.
C. The boy’s parents assisting him.
D. The encouragement of his friends.
25. How did Cikgu find his first year in the special education school?
A. Challenging. B. Disturbing.
C. Promising. D. Refreshing.
26. What did Cikgu think the students lack?
A. Healthy bodies. B. Self-confidence.
C. Daily exercise. D. Families’ concern.
27. What can we infer about Cikgu from the last paragraph?
A. He’ll retire immediately. B. He’s looking after horses.
C. He’s a potential inventor. D. He’ll participate in a sport.
D 25. A 26. B 27. C
根据第二段的最后两句“‘If you had more expert knowledge, you’d help more people,’ his friends told him. With that he went back to school to get a degree in special education.”(“如果你具备专业知识,你就能帮助更多的人。”
根据第三段的第二、三句“Trained to help students with cerebral palsy, when he came to the school in the first year, he was surprised to learn that he would also be teaching blind students. However, he did not back down in the face of such pressure.”(他接受的培训是帮助患有脑瘫的学生,但他第一年到学校时惊讶地发现他也要给失明的学生授课。 故选A项。
根据第四段的第二句“It’s not because they are disabled, but because they don’t have the courage to explore the outside world that has caused them to be depressed.”(并不是因为他们身患残疾,而是因为他们没有勇气去探索外面的世界,致使他们沮丧。)
根据最后一段的“one day, I saw one student pushing a foldable trolley (推车) and the idea suddenly came to mind(有一天,我看到一个学生推着一辆可折叠的手推车,我突然想到了这个想法)”以及 “Ever since then, Cikgu has made it his mission to create an even better device. He’s built Caballus RAFVI which is named after a blind but brave horse.(从那以后,Cikgu把创造更好的设备作为他的使命。

Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhino (犀牛), died at 45 (elderly in rhino age) on Monday at Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy, about 130 kilometers north of Nairobi. The animal’s health had been in a bad state for the past month and recently worsened so much that he could no longer stand, so his treatment team decided to euthanize (使安乐死) him.
Born in Shambe, South Sudan, the rhino was captured two years after living in the wild and brought to the Dvur Królovė Zoo in the Czech Republic. He was moved to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy 34 years later.
This very special animal was beloved by many worldwide—and his death is a terrible warning of humanity’s threat to animals. Hunters in the 20th century wiped out most of this white rhino subspecies population, mainly for their horns, which were used in traditional Chinese health treatments. More than 2,000 of the animals lived in the wild in the 1960s, but their numbers had dropped to a couple of dozen by the end of the century. The only remaining northern white rhinos today are two captive (关在笼子里的) females—Sudan’s daughter Najin and granddaughter, Fatu. Neither is able to give birth naturally.
Now researchers are hoping to keep this kind of animal alive by artificially fertilizing Najin and Fatu’s eggs with sperm (精子) frozen from male northern white rhinos and then implanting the fertilized eggs into a female southern white rhino—a subspecies that was also threatened but has since grown quickly because of conservation efforts. Last year, as part of a campaign to raise money for such fertilization attempts, which experts say could cost as much as US $9 million, Sudan acquired a Tinder social medial account where people can donate money by swiping right on their phone screen. As of late Tuesday, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy had yet to update its website, which still read, “Visit the last three northern white rhinos”—a ticking alarm clock to which some humans are desperately trying to add time.
28. What is Ol Pejeta Conservancy?
A. A forest. B. A river.
C. An animal hospital. D. A nature reserve.
29. Why did Sudan’s treatment team plan to euthanize him?
A. He was too old. B. He couldn’t stand.
C. The team had no money to cure him. D. The team wanted to stop his pain.
30. What can we learn about white rhinos from the passage?
A. Their horns have great artistic value in China.
B. The two captive white rhinos can now give natural birth.
C. They were hunted in large numbers in the 20th century,
D. Their number had dropped to 2,000 by the end of the 20th century.
31. What do we know about artificial fertilization from the last paragraph?
A. It needs a huge amount of money to carry out.
B. It was first carried out in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
C. It is a safe but slow way to produce white rhino subspecies.
D. It has been used in many other young rhinos besides Najin and Fatu.
D 29. D 30. C 31. A

He was moved to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy 34 years later.(这只犀牛出生于南苏丹的沙姆贝,在野外生活两年后被捕获,并被带到捷克共和国的Dvur Królovė动物园。
根据第一段“The animal’s health had been in a bad state for the past month and recently worsened so much that he could no longer stand, so his treatment team decided to euthanize him.(在过去的一个月里,这只动物的健康状况一直很糟糕,最近病情严重恶化,以至于它再也站不住了,所以他的治疗团队决定对它实施安乐死。)”
根据第三段“Hunters in the 20th century wiped out most of this white rhino subspecies population, mainly for their horns, which were used in traditional Chinese health treatments.(20世纪的猎人消灭了大多数白犀牛亚种,主要是因为它们的角,这被用于中国传统的健康治疗。)”

The twilight (朦胧的) time between full wakefulness and being sound asleep may be packed with creative potential. Rumor has it that Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, used to prefer such moments between wakefulness and sleep. Supposedly, he used to fall asleep in a chair holding two steel balls. As he fell asleep, the balls fell into metal pans. The resulting sound woke him. Then, he could write down his inventive ideas before he fell into a deep sleep and forgot them.
Researchers tested Edison’s method of developing creativity with 103 healthy people. Volunteers came to the lab to solve a tricky number problem. After doing the task 60 times, they earned a 20-minute break in a quiet, dark room. They relaxed in chairs, each holding a light drinking bottle, something like the steel balls that Edison used. Participants were told to close their eyes and rest or sleep if they desired. Meanwhile, machines monitored their brain waves. About half of the participants stayed awake. Twenty-four fell asleep and stayed in the shallow short stage of sleep called N1. Fourteen others progressed to N2, a deeper stage of sleep.
After their rest, participants returned to their number problem. The researchers saw a clear difference between the groups. People with a shallow early sleep were 2.7 times as likely to spot the hidden trick as people who stayed awake. Shallow sleepers were 5.8 times as likely to spot the trick as people who reached the deeper N2 stage.
Such differences in such experiments are rare, says Delphine Oudiette, a cognitive neuroscientist. “The results raise an interesting possibility. It may help people to learn to reach that twilight stage of sleep on demand. It seems Edison was onto something about the creative powers of nodding off. But don’t put too much faith in his habits. He also is said to have considered sleep ‘a criminal waste of time’.”
32. Why is Thomas Edison mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To imply the inspiration of the study. B. To explain how habits can help.
C. To support the idea theoretically. D. To lay scientific basis of the study.
33. What can be known about the drinking bottle?
A. It belonged to Thomas Edison. B. It was made of a kind of steel.
C. It may serve as an alarm o’clock. D. It was in the shape of a metal pan.
34. What did the study find?
A. Being awake is as creative as being asleep.
B. Wakefulness differs from sleep in many aspects.
C. Being asleep is more productive than wakefulness.
D. Shallow sleepers may be better problem solvers later.
35. How does Oudiette like the study?
A. Ridiculous. B. Doubtful. C. Realistic. D. Useful.
A 33. C 34. D 35. D
根据第一段“Rumor has it that Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, used to prefer such moments between wakefulness and sleep.”(有传言说,著名的发明家托马斯·爱迪生过去喜欢在清醒和睡眠之间的这段时间)以及第二段“Researchers tested Edison’s method of developing creativity with 103 healthy people.”(研究人员用103名健康人测试了爱迪生培养创造力的方法)可知,第一段提及托马斯·爱迪生的特殊习惯旨在引出后文研究人员进行试验的依据,即他提供了研究的灵感,故选A。
根据第一段“Supposedly, he used to fall asleep in a chair holding two steel balls. As he fell asleep, the balls fell into metal pans. The resulting sound woke him.”(他过去常常在一把椅子上拿着两个钢球睡着。
从第三段“People with a shallow early sleep were 2.7 times as likely to spot the hidden trick as people who stayed awake. Shallow sleepers were 5.8 times as likely to spot the trick as people who reached the deeper N2 stage.”(早睡较浅的人发现隐藏秘密的可能性是醒着的人的2.7倍。
根据最后一段Oudiette的话“The results raise an interesting possibility. It may help people to learn to reach that twilight stage of sleep on demand.”(研究结果提出了一种有趣的可能性。

根据后文“In this way you can put all the faults and the problems on others. That’s nice and convenient. Actually, it’s just an attempt to refuse to take responsibility for your own faults, doing absolutely nothing about it.(这样你就可以把所有的过错和问题都推给别人。
根据上文“There really is no benefit in blaming people or circumstances. By ignoring your own contribution to the situation or insisting that others are to blame, you are refusing to take control of your life.(责备别人或环境真的没有好处。
根据上文“So it’s better to try to control your reactions rather than blame others.(所以最好是控制自己的反应,而不是责怪别人)”以及后文“Essentially, you must stop letting other people’s actions affect you. Think about your own response and take charge. Respond by taking action to address what can be addressed.(从根本上说,你必须停止让别人的行为影响你。
根据上文“Essentially, you must stop letting other people’s actions affect you. Think about your own response and take charge. Respond by taking action to address what can be addressed.(从根本上说,你必须停止让别人的行为影响你。
根据上文“Never again allow yourself to say “I can’t help it. It wasn’t my fault.” George Bernard Shaw said, “People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are.(永远不要再允许自己说“我没办法。 萧伯纳说过:“人们总是把自己的处境归咎于环境)”以及后文“I admire people who look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.(我钦佩那些寻找他们想要的机会的人,如果他们找不到机会,就自己创造机会)”可知,后文提到钦佩寻找想要机会的人,可见萧伯纳并不相信环境。

分析句子成分,主语是those,that don’t是省略的定语从句,修饰前面的those;谓语动词是burden,和those是被动关系。
故填without。
“It’s reported that...” 故填that。
故填which。
故填though/however。

Dear Jane,
Glad to hear from you and welcome you to China in July. You are eager to learn about Chinese social customs. The following are some of them.
Firstly, we greet each other by saying “Hello” or asking such questions as “Where are you going?” “Have you had dinner?” to show good manners. Next, when receiving a gift, we usually say thanks to show politeness and then put it away instead of opening the package as in your country. Finally, at dinner parties, we usually chat loudly and touch glasses when drinking to someone's health or success.
Anyhow, Customs vary from country to country. If you “Do as the Romans do when in Rome”, you’ll enjoy more of your stay here. I hope what’s mentioned above might be helpful. Wish you a good journey to China!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

In late December, the cow path near our house in Tennessee was still covered with leaves, but I knew snow would be falling soon enough. My younger brother, Buddy Earl, and I were on an important mission: Go to Uncle Tommie’s place and get a goose(鹅). The hiking over Little Mountain and getting there would be worth it. Uncle Tommie raised the best geese around, and he’d offered to give us one for Christmas dinner.
Uncle Tommie met us at the door. “I’m not rushing you boys,” he said, “but as light snow started, you’d better get the goose and head home.” It didn’t take me long to pick up a goose from his yard. Buddy and I said a quick thank you and goodbye. The snow came down harder, wind blowing every way.
“I’m as cold as ice. How about you?” asked Buddy.
I tapped the goose’s head. “I wish we had feathers to keep us warm like you,” I said. “Or heavier coats.”
“Doug, I’m freezing,” Buddy said. I could hardly hear him over the wind and my own chattering teeth. “I think we should go back.” The idea was attractive, but we were closer to home than to Uncle Tommie’s house. We had to push on.
I held the goose closer to my chest. The bird was the only warm thing about me. I stepped in front of my brother. “Buddy, open your coat!” “Are you crazy?” He asked. “I’ll lose the little warmth I have.” When he saw I was serious, he slowly unzipped (拉开……的拉链) his coat and opened it. I placed the warm goose inside his coat and zipped it back up. “Make sure you keep the goose’s head out so it can breathe.” Buddy sighed happily. My plan was working.
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
“Doug, it is time for you to open your coat.”
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing our surviving experience, my parents hesitated about what to do with the goose.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “Doug, it is time for you to open your coat.” Buddy handed the goose to me. Its feathered body was as warm as angel feathers inside my coat. Putting my freezing hands on its body, I felt a rush of warmth sweeping over me. We passed the goose back and forth between us all the way home, battling biting cold. After what seemed like ages, we got home. Upon arrival, we couldn’t wait to explain to our parents how the goose had kept us from freezing. (76 words)
Hearing our surviving experience, my parents hesitated about what to do with the goose. “What should we have for Christmas dinner?” They looked at us with a concerned look. “Anything but the goose. He has saved our lives.” Buddy and I exclaimed. Shifting gazes between us and the goose which was honking as if he were pleading too. “Fine. Then we’ll do without it,” my parents announced. “Hooray!” we sprang to our feet. That Christmas, we didn’t have a grand feast, but came upon a hero in our life. (75 words)
