Nt all brilliant reads are behind the paywall, sme classics are much mre accessible—click and dwnlad.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
It is a truth universally acknwledged that Pride and Prejudice is a really, really gd bk. A little bit rigid, a little bit repressed, a little bit tender, and painfully class cnscius, it’s the full English rmance package. In April 2008, I came acrss an essay a by with autism(自闭症)had written when he was 14. I was impressed. I thught there was ptential fr a dcumentary. The directr agreed. “Find the by!” he said. A cuple f mnths later, I fund him, Antn. S it began -a film abut Antn’s transfrmatin. At least, that’s what I thught at the time.
During filming, I helped put him int different hspitals and camps fr treatment and we became clse. There were lts f unfrgettable mments. I remember ne visit when we sat tgether, talking quietly and eating fd I’d made. Then it was time fr me t g. Withut saying a wrd, Antn std up and started t bang his head against the wall. BAM. BAM. Bld streamed dwn his face. At that mment, lking at the despair n Antn’s face, I recgnized myself. What I recgnized was an emtinal abundance in him that I had myself. Like Antn, I was ver the tp. If I lved smene, I lved them cmpletely. If I was upset, I let it shw. But unlike Antn, I’d learned t edit emtins as if they were a film. But lately, I was waking up in the mrning with ne terrifying thught: “Wh am I?” Antn helped me t answer this. He was the nly persn in my life wh let me lve withut any hlding back and wh lved me the same way.
The film Antn’s Right Here was released in Octber 2012 and shwn at film festivals in Russia where it received prizes at several majr Russian film festivals.
After the film was shwn by the First TV Channel -Russia’s main TV channel - letters flwed in. Autistic individuals and their families needed help. That’s when the idea f a fundatin began t take shape in my mind. The fundatin, called Antn’s Right Here, fficially pened in December 2013. It’s Russia’s first-ever centre fr adults with autism. It keeps helping peple with autism like Antn.
When we started t film, Antn was 19. He’s nw 31. I’m still very much a part f his life. With his unedited emtins, Antn reminds me every day f what it’s like t be really, unreservedly lved and t lve back in return.
    24. Why did the writer want t find Antn?
    A. She intended t make a film abut Antn.B. She saw Antn’s ptential t be a writer.

Entire twns in western Germany were destryed last week by “the fld f the century”, said Susanne Schlz in Express, and the whle cuntry is in shck. The images n TV news lked like they were cming frm a trpical mnsn zne (热带季风区), nt ur first-wrld natin. Never did we think we wuld see ur wn citizens “trapped in huses n the edge f crash, in danger f being swept away by masses f water”.
Days f severe rain gt rivers t burst their banks in the states f Rhineland-Palatinate and Nrth Rhine-Westphalia and in neighbring Belgium and the Netherlands. In the small twn f Sinzig, the River Ahr reached its highest level at abut 23 feet, flding a nursing hme and drwning 12 disabled residents wh culd nt flee.
Authrities have s far cnfirmed sme 200 deaths acrss Germany, but hundreds mre peple remain missing. While authrities say it’s t early t put a price tag n the damage, the images f flded hmes and electrical statins, damaged bridges, and cars crumpled (变皱) by fallen trees tell a tale f vast material lss. “The German language hardly knws any wrds fr the damage that has been brught abut,” said Chancellr Angela Merkel. She praised the thusands f vlunteers wh came t pump ut water, lad sandbags, and search fr survivrs.
“Disaster cntrl clearly failed,” said Peter Tiede in Bild. State and lcal authrities respnsible fr evacuatin (疏散) warnings relied n smartphne apps that many Germans dn’t have — and service was ut anyway because the strms had dwned the cell twers. Only ld-fashined alarms wrk in such emergencies, yet ur few ludspeaker vans never left the statins. Public radi, meanwhile, “was playing pp music while hundreds f peple were being washed away, huses cllapsing, villages trn dwn t the grund.” It’s simply unfrgivable. “Hw bad will it get when such a fld hits a majr city like Clgne r Hamburg instead f villages and small twns?”
    28. Hw did the whle cuntry react t the fld?
    A. They were indifferent.B. They were quite surprised.

    A. The German language is limited.B. Vlunteers are needed badly.
    C. The damage is beynd descriptin.D. New vcabulary shuld be added.
    31. What can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Authrities Shuld Be t BlameB. Majr Cities Are Ready fr Emergency
C Harmful Flds Raise Cncerns in GermanyD. Deaths Are Cnfirmed in Terrible Flds

In 2008, Michael Gdfellw, a scientist at Newcastle University, was handed a sil sample taken frm Chile’s Atacama Desert—the wrld’s driest desert, nce cnsidered a dead zne. “Quite frankly, we didn’t expect t islate (使分离) anything,” Gdfellw admits. But t his surprise, he was able t grw a diversity f bacteria frm the sample.
A 2018 review cunted a ttal f 46 new mlecules (分子) that have been islated frm the Atacama bacteria s far, many f which shw antibitic (抗菌的), antiviral r anticancer prperties (特征). It was the type f bacteria living in the Atacama that prved particularly exciting: actinbacteria (放线菌).
Take streptmyces griseus fr example, a species f actinbacteria yu might find in sil. A sample f streptmyces, when placed amng mycbacterium tuberculsis (结核杆菌), will release a chemical which stps its bacterial neighbrs frm grwing the prteins they need t survive. When scientists at Rutgers University managed t islate this chemical in 1944, they accidentally fund the first antibitic treatment fr tuberculsis, saving cuntless lives.
Tday, there is general agreement n the need fr the develpment f new antibitics because ur mst trusted drugs began t fail—bacteria have learnt hw t survive ur antibitic attacks. Smetimes, a ptentially useful chemical can be fund right in envirnments arund us. But many scientists argue that we shuld als be explring the natural wrld fr nvel bichemistry, an apprach knwn as “biprspecting”.
“70% t 75% f all antibitics cme frm nature,” ntes Marcel Jaspars, a natural prduct chemist at the University f Aberdeen. “It strikes me that we shuld be lking mre deeply int hw nature makes these mlecules and hw we can actually find antibitics.”
    32. What did Gdfellw think f the sample at first?
    A. It was lifeless.B. It was man-made.C. It was f great value.D. It was f dubtful rigin.
    33. Why des the authr mentin scientists’ achievement in 1944?
    A. T cmpare tw species f actinbacteria.B. T explain the majr cause f tuberculsis.
    C. T explain the purpse f antibitic treatments.D. T shw the ptential f the Atacama actinbacteria.
    34. Which f the fllwing best describes Jaspars’ attitude t “biprspecting”?
    A. Dubtful.B. Supprtive.C. Tlerant.D. Cnservative.
    35. What des the passage mainly talk abut?
    A. Antibitics are bund t fail.B. Effective treatments cme frm nature.
    C. Fun facts are listed abut the Atacama Desert.D. The desert sil culd save lives.
