According to a story, when the first ancient pioneers set out from northern and central China, hoping to live in southern China, they met many difficulties. In the mountains and forests of southern China, they found dangerous animals, snakes and countless insects. A wise and respected old man came up with the idea of a building, hanging on wooden columns (柱子). Then people built these tall buildings, and soon they were safe from the danger of living things below.
These are the first diaojiaolou, dating back more than 500 years. They are widely spread in some southern provinces, but their appearances are different in different places. Although the old stories behind diaojiaolou may not seem true, we can clearly see one of its main benefits: protecting themselves from wild animals.
Most diaojiaolou are square wooden structures (结构) supported by wooden columns. They are usually 8 meters or 12 meters tall. The upper floors are supported by thick wooden columns, which are further strengthened (加强) by stone blocks at the bottom. For a few days, Scott Jurek thought he would fail. He was running on the Appalachian Trail (小路), a 2,168-mile trail and hoping to break a speed record.
But near the end of the long, hard journey, he feared he would stop. “I wanted to give up because I didn’t think I could break the record,” Jurek said. “I’m totally tired.” In the beginning, Jurek was running 14 hours a day and less than 50 miles a day. There is a special kind of tree in the world: there is not a single leaf on it, only green branches (树干) . If you cut or break them, some white milk will run out. Milk bush (灌木) often makes many people interested in it because of the strange name and shape.

A hero is one who is super (超级的) natural, and has super powers— that’s what some people might think. But I think differently because to me a hero is a real person, and a heroic act for me is when a person goes out of his way to help someone else without being told to.
