展开Gd afternn, ladies and gentlemen. Thank yu all fr cming t this lecture. Over the curse f my career, I have seen many wnderful scientific develpments, but nne are as game-changing as genme editing. I am full f excitement abut the pssibilities this scientific advance can bring and I hpe t share my excitement with yu tday.

As many f yu may already knw, genes play a critical rle in shaping ur lives. Everything frm the clr f ur eyes t ur talent fr maths depends n genes. The cmplete set f genes inside a cell r a living being is called a genme. Our wn persnal genme carries all the infrmatin needed t make us grw and develp. It als cntains infrmatin that helps determine ur lifespan and affects ur chances f cntracting certain diseases. Sme peple, fr example, carry a gene that makes them mre likely t catch a certain virus r develp a particular frm f cancer.

Geneticists have been trying t identify which genes relate t which diseases, as they believe genme editing is an effective means f disease treatment and preventin. It allws geneticists t make changes t the genme by crrecting, adding, deleting r replacing specific parts f the genetic material. In the near future, geneticists hpe t apply this technlgy t treat a wide range f healthprblems. Sn we may be able t use such treatments t restre a blind persn’s visin r give smene wh was brn deaf an excellent sense f hearing. Ultimately, this new technlgy might even make it pssible t prevent diseases frm ever develping by crrecting abnrmal genes early n. Genme editing, serving as a new weapn in the fight against diseases, will lead t a fundamental change in ur apprach t health care.

As the technlgy cntinues t develp at a fast pace, hwever, questins arise abut hw t use it apprpriately. Shuld we restrict ur use f this technlgy t the treatment and preventin f diseases? Shuld we prhibit geneticists frm using it t enhance healthy bdies? One day sn we will be able t use genme editing t increase the human resistance t clds and flus, t make peple taller, t help their muscles develp faster, t sharpen all f their senses r t make them mre intelligent. We will als be able t select specific characteristics fr children befre they are brn, creating what sme have called “designer babies”. Hwever, is this a gd thing? What cnsequences might it have? Philsphers, geneticists and gvernment fficials have all started t wrestle with such mral issues. We have t figure ut hw t keep the technlgy frm running wild. This means putting apprpriate cntrls in place t make sure that genme editing will wrk t ur advantage. Withut them, genme editing culd be as dangerus as a car ut f cntrl.
