The only thing better than reading a good book is reading it with others. In a book club, a group of people choose a book that everyone will read separately and then discuss together. 1 It’s also a lot of fun to talk about what you’re reading with friends.
There are no rules of starting a book club. 2 It’s good to think ahead about how you’d like the book club to run and when and where you’ll meet.
3 Think of eight to twelve people around your age. Perhaps encourage your friends to invite people who they know well but you haven’t met. A book club can help you make friends.
Second, having a subject can make the club receive more attention. You might want to read fantasy stories or science fiction(小说). 4 If you take it in turns to choose the books you read, you might discover some great new books and authors too.
Finally, make sure you read the book before the meeting. 5
Actions speak louder than words. Try to start a book club of your own.
A.First, invite some friends to be your members.
B.Reading is not only something you enjoy by yourself.
C.A subject makes it easier to decide which books to read.
D.And then come to the meeting with questions to discuss.

You have lots of things you’d like to do. But sometimes it’s hard to get to the finish line—just like your goal. How can you break your bad habits and develop good ones? 1 Here are a few opinions we often get from kids, followed by ideas that might help.
●I can’t get away from screens.
2 If you usually spend time lying on the sofa and watching TV programs or a video when you’re bored, go somewhere else instead. Take a book to your room or your violin to the backyard. Or ask if you can help cook in the kitchen.
● 3
Start with “showing up”. Then take one small step or do one tiny task, followed by another and another. For example, how do I practice the piano? First sit at it. Then play one note at a time.
Starting with a super-simple step often helps. Why? It is easy, quick, and gets you in action. 4
●I have no time.
Take a look at the choices you make about how you spend time. Do those choices show what’s important to you? Can you spare 10 minutes a day to work on a goal? Let’s suppose you want to be a singer. 5 Talk with a parent about why your goal counts. Discuss whether you can let go of something less important to free up time to achieve it.
A.Then keep taking steps.
B.I can’t start such a huge goal.
C.And how can you try to reach your goals?
D.To change a habit, try changing where you spend your time.
E.Is it more important to practice singing than play video games?

We should not use more water than we actually need. If we do, we will not have enough water in the future. 1 It is not a difficult question to answer. If we remove more fresh water than nature replaces, we have taken too much.
Many cities run campaigns(运动)to get people to stop wasting water. They show them ways they can cut back on water use. 2 What’s more, they carry out programs that offer money to reduce water use. For example, they give people shower heads and toilets that use less water. 3
Another threat(威胁)to our water supply is pollution. When our sources of fresh water get polluted, we can no longer use this water. This also endangers(危及)the animals that depend on the water.
4 We can save lots of water by not letting taps(水龙头)run while we brush our teeth or by turning off taps right after washing hands. By collecting cold water when we’re taking warm showers, we can also save water. 5 In this way, we can make full use of water.
A.However, just how much is too much?
B.There are several things we can do to save water.
C.Finally, they make laws to control the use of water.

It was nearly dinner time when my 5-year-old daughter rushed into the house. Tears rolled down as she held out two hurt arms. 1 I told her that children of her age usually rode with training wheels. She refused my advice and as soon as the bandages (绷带) were stuck on her arms, she headed back out the door.
2 I wanted to run out there and make her stop, but I couldn’t. I would have to let go. After all, she had agreed to wear her brother’s helmet and knee pads (护膝).
Finally, I couldn’t stand and went outside to see if I could help. 3 She shouted back at me, “Mommy, I got it. Let go!” I remembered when I first learned to ride a two-wheeler at her age. I remembered how I knew I could do it if I just kept trying. Suddenly I understood why she would never give up.
4 I rushed outside and saw that she was riding down the driveway with both her hands held high in the air. “Look, Mom, no hands!” she said, laughing as she rode by.

Seeing blood in a horror movie might make you cover your eyes, but real blood isn’t scary at all. 1 That’s why blood donors are considered lifesavers.
Blood donors are those giving blood—usually about 200ml at a time—to blood banks or blood donation(捐赠) centers. 2 For example, someone may have lost blood in accidents, or have a serious illness that requires his blood to be replaced. Hospitals and blood banks store the blood and try to keep enough on hand.
3 Medical workers ask donors several questions to make sure the blood is safe to use. Then the donors relax, often reading a magazine or talking as their blood is drawn. Afterward, the donors may receive some juice or water and maybe fruit to give them energy. The process is simple, not scary. 4
To give blood, a person must be at least 18 years old and must meet certain other requirements. Students of all ages, though, can learn more about the donation process by visiting a local blood donation center. 5 It is also an easy way to help a community.
A.Donating blood is not difficult.
B.Then the blood can be used for people in need.
C.In fact, blood is the gift of life and keeps us alive.
D.Donating blood is not only one of the easiest ways to save lives.

Do you know the reason why we feel tired in the middle of a class? Maybe you would say it is because the teacher’s class is boring. 1 Perhaps this is something you have not paid enough attention to or not yet noticed.
Purpose of sleep

The Value of Negative Results
We all avoid failure(失败), and most of us fear it. However, without failure, progress would be impossible. What does success usually come after? Failure. It seems that one cannot exist(存在) without the other.
Accepting failure is not easy for many, though. We are often unwilling to accept failure because our professional fame depends on success. 1 In the past ten years, for example, some scientific magazines have published reports of failed tests. It is believed that scientists can learn from “negative(负面的)” results and that this can finally lead to positive results.
2 The ABN AMRO Bank started an Institute(机构) of Brilliant Failures to learn more about what works and what doesn’t in banking. Similarly, Eli Lilly and Company had failure parties to study the drugs(药物) that don’t work.
In fact, one of the business world’s most famous failures became one of its biggest successes, in part because the product’s makers learned from their mistakes. 3 The product, though unique(独特的) at the time, was expensive and heavy;besides, some of its most important features(特点) didn’t work properly. As a result, it became one of Apple’s biggest failures, and in 1998, the company stopped selling it. However, Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, believed in the product and he began to find out ways of improving it. In time, this led to the production of the iPhone and the iPad, two of the company’s most successful products.
4 Not only should we try to learn from it;if we want to succeed, we must also be persistent(执着的).Though Apple stopped selling the Newton in 1998, the first iPhone wasn’t available until 2007. It took a lot of research and hard work to go from the Apple Newton to iPhone, but in the end, the effort became successful.
All in all, there is a lot we can learn by studying mistakes. Perhaps the most important lesson is that failure and success are two sides of the same coin. 5
A.One truly cannot exist without the other.
B.In the early 1990s, Apple created a phone called the Apple Newton.
C.The business world already understands the value of negative results.
D.However, things are slowly changing, especially in business and science.
E.The story of the Apple Newton can teach us an important lesson about failure.

When procrastination becomes a habit, it can make our lives terrible. However, everyone can avoid it by taking a few simple steps today!

3 .
If your workplace is full of distractions(使人分心的事), you’ll need to make some changes. You may need to remove your phone or TV from your workplace. If people often stop by for a talk, you may need to move to a different place.
Follow the five-minute rule.
The hardest part about any task is getting started. That’s why so many people avoid their work until the last minute. Doing so usually leads to added stress. One solution to this problem is to schedule a time daily to work on your big project. Work on it for only five minutes. Then decide whether or not to continue. Surprisingly, once you’ve begun, 4 .

Storytelling
Storytelling has caught the human imagination for thousands of years. People everywhere have told stories to amuse, to teach, to remember, and just to pass the time. People started telling stories long before writing was invented. 1 But people all over the world still tell one another stories out loud. A person who can tell a good story nearly always finds listeners.
Before people developed writing, storytelling was the most important way to pass along information. Anything a culture wanted to protect—its beliefs, its history, and its traditions—had to be told out loud. Each generation would tell the culture’s stories to the next. 2 Knowledge passed on in this method is called the spoken tradition. Even cultures that know how to write still pass along some information in this way.
3 In other cultures only special storytellers were trusted to do this important job. A culture’s best storytellers had good memories. They could also make the stories very interesting, so people would listen and remember them. Sometimes people would sing the stories or tell them in the form of poems. 4
However, stories told aloud change over time as different people tell them. A storyteller might change a story in order to make it better. Or a teller may simply not remember all the details of a story. Unlike written stories, the spoken tradition is not created by any one person. 5 Sometimes the stories are collected and written down long after they have beencreated.
A.In this way the stories were passed along.
B.In some cultures everyone would pass along the stories.
C.Songs and poems can both make stories easier to remember.
D.Instead, a whole culture helps shape the changing stories throughout history.
E.Today stories are also written down in books and acted out in movies, TV shows, and plays.

“The only constant(不变) in life is change,”Heraclitus said in about 500 B.C. That could be truer today. 1 Technology is out of date almost by the time you buy it. We get plenty of information every day. Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” In fact, there is more information in a newspaper than he would have experienced in his whole life.
Why are we afraid of change? 2 After all, who knows what new dangers might appear? However, change is also the only way of development. Nobody can stop it in life. Luckily, our brains become stronger when meeting the unknown. 3 To be more imaginative and creative, you should look for and find environments you have no experience with.
4 For example, try a new restaurant, or go to a play or a concert you normally wouldn’t attend. Small changes can help you gradually get used to uncertainties(不确定). So when bigger things happen, you’ll be more fully prepared for them.
People who fear change often stick to a certain lifestyle. They believe they can control the future by doing so. 5 If you can move from just accepting it to actively finding it out and dealing with it, you will be successful.
A.Dealing with the unexpected needs imagination and creativity.
B.That’s because our brains want to protect us.
C.But change comes whether you ask for it or not.
D.We live in a world that is changing every minute.
E.You can learn how to face the changes in daily life.

Close friends, think alike?
“What! You, too?I believed I was the only one.” Have you ever said something like this to someone? 1
It seems that similarity often helps form friendship. The Greek thinker Aristotle once said, “People regard friendship as a matter of similarity; they say that we love those who are like ourselves.” 2 Scientists from University of California said friends have similar behaviors, Scientific American reported.
The scientists invited 42 university students to take part in a test. Each student watched the same set of videos, which included a comedy, a discussion and a soccer match. 3 According to their scans, friends who watched the same video reacted in similar ways. Similar parts of their brains lit up while watching the videos, especially parts that are connected with motivation(动机), learning and memory. 4
“Seeing one’s friends have similar behaviors will reinforce(强化)one’s own values, opinions, and interests,”lead scientist Carolyn Parkinson told Business Insider. 5 Scientists from the University of Leipzig, Germany, found that friendship is also based on how physically close you are to someone. The scientists did a test with first-year college students the first time they met in class. In this test, students who sat in neighboring seats were more likely to become friends.
A.Now, there is some science behind this idea.
B.If so, you may have ended up becoming friends with this person.
C.At the same time, scientists scanned their brains and recorded their brain activity.
D.But brain similarity is not the only thing that can result in friendship.
E.However, people who weren’t friends had different reactions to the same videos.
