Much of our thinking about health is based on wishful thinking. But science provides clear and simple advice for a healthy life. Graham Lawton explores the evidence. Graham proves that you don’t have to be a health and fitness extremist to be reasonably healthy. He has rounded up the latest and strictest health research and changed it into useful advice on all the big health issues: diet, weight loss, exercise, sleep, ageing and so on.
Graham, New Scientist feature writer, is not the common health expert. He sometimes eats fast food. He has a gym membership but rarely uses it. And he takes medicine to keep his blood pressure under control. He neither has a diet plan nor a 6-week program to keep fit and thin.
But he does have a much better weapon: science. In a talk, Graham explains the basic science, tells people some of the secrets of science, teaches people to use the ability of judgement to tell the good from the bad, and helps them to see beyond the headlines. The talk allows people to eat healthily, lose weight, and sort the truth out from science facts.
But he loves outdoor sports. Last year Graham cycled over 1,200 miles and ran the same distance of 15 marathons. He often goes swimming outdoors and walks up eight flights of stairs to his desk instead of taking the lift. He eats his five copies of fruit and vegetables a day, keeps enough water in his body, and doesn’t eat much meat. Despite all the bad habits, his good ones seem to be winning. Graham is 50, but his “biological age” was recently measured as 45.
24.What can we learn about Graham?
A. He has an extremely strict diet.
B. He has some bad eating habits.
C. He looks down on common health experts.
D. He always bases health on wishful thinking.
25. What’s Graham’s talk in paragraph 3 about?
A. Functions of medicine. B.Words as weapons.
C. Health and science. D. Ability and confidence.
26. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about Graham?
A. His health books. B. His indoor sports.
C. His way of thinking D. His healthy lifestyle.
27. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Professional Ways to Do Sports
B. The Secrets of Living a Healthy Life
C. The Unique Path to Scientific Success
D. The Importance of Exercise for Health

What makes a word real? Who has the power to make those kinds of official decisions about words? Those are the questions many people have in mind. When most people say a word isn’t real, what they mean is that it doesn’t appear in a dictionary. That, of course, raises some other questions, including, who writes dictionaries?
Now, dictionaries are good resources, but they are changeable. If you ask dictionary editors, what they’ll tell you is that they’re just trying to keep up with people as people change the language. They’re watching what people say and what people write and trying to figure out what's going to stick and what’s not going to stick.
Every January, dictionary editors go to the American Dialect Society Meeting every year, where among other things, they decide on the word of the year. There are about 200 or 300 people who come. Some of them are the best known linguists(语言学家)in the United States. In the past, some of the winners have been “staycation” to describe a vacation spent at home and “tweet” to describe a post made on the social networking service Twitter.
So how does a word get into a dictionary? It gets in because people use it and people keep using it, and dictionary editors are paying attention to people. If a community of speakers is using a word and knows what it means, it’s real. That word might be informal and that word might be a word that you think is illogical (不合逻辑的) or unnecessary, but as long as people are using the word, it is real. I hope that what you can do is to find language change not annoying but fun and interesting, just the way dictionary editors do. I hope you can enjoy being part of the creativity that is continually remaking our language and keeping it alive.
28.Why do dictionaries change over time?
A.Dictionary editors change every year. B.Linguists often make up new words.
C.Speakers keep changing language. D.Words in the dictionary are out of date.
29. Who has the right to decide the word of the year?
A. Dictionary editors. B. American Officials.
C. New words inventors. D. Famous linguists.
30. What does the underlined word “staycation” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Taking a holiday while working. B. Going on a vacation at home.
C. Staying at home for the moment. D. Working online at home.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards language changing?
A. Worried. B. Confused. C. Uninterested. D. Positive.
D
There have been few positives during the Covid pandemic(流行病)but British academics may have spotted one: People look more attractive in protective masks(口罩).
Dr Michael Lewis, an expert in faces, said research before the pandemic had found that medical face masks reduced attractiveness because they were related to illness.
“We wanted to test whether this had changed since face coverings became popular.” he said. “Our study suggests faces are considered most attractive when covered by medical face masks. This may be because we’re used to healthcare workers wearing blue masks and now we associate these with people in caring or medical professions.”
The first part of the research was carried out in February 2021 by which time the British population had become used to wearing masks in some places. Forty-three women were asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 10—the attractiveness of images of male faces without a mask, wearing a plain cloth mask, a blue medical face mask, and holding a plain black book covering the area a face mask would hide.
The participants said those wearing a cloth mask were much more attractive than the ones with no masks or whose faces were partly covered by the book. But the surgical (外科的) mask made the wearer look even better. Lewis said it was also possible that masks made people more attractive because they directed attention to the eyes. He said other studies had found that covering the left or right half of a face also made people look more attractive, partly because the brain fills in the missing gaps and beautify the overall effect.
The results of the first study has been published in the journal Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications. A second study has been carried out, in which a group of men look at women in masks; it has yet to be published but Lewis said the results were probably the same.
32. Why were protective masks not welcome before the pandemic?
A. Because they were related to disease.
B. Because the masks wore uncomfortably.
C. Because only doctors had the right to wear them.
D. Because some wearers couldn’t take a smooth breath.
33. Who looked more attractive according to the participants?
A. Those with cloth masks.
B. Those without any covering.
C. Those with surgical masks.
D. Those with “book” masks.
34. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Masks help during the pandemic.
B. Men need to wear masks.
C. Find ways to become charming.
D. Face masks make you attractive.
35.Where is the text probably from?
A. A book on biology. B. A newspaper.
C. A fashion magazine. D. A guidebook.

A. following跟随;B. quickening加快;C. taking带去;D. slowing减速。
A. calm平静的;B. amazing惊讶的;C. fruitful多产的;D. hard艰难的。由后句中作者的叙述“My teenage daughter had left home for university, my job of 23 years was no more(我的女儿离开家去上大学了,我干了23年的工作也没了)”不难推断,这一年对于作者来说是不顺的。故选D项。
A. gradually逐渐;B. obviously明显地;C. suddenly突然地;D. seriously严重地。
A. far from远非,完全不;B. free from免于;C. more than超过;D. other than除了。 故选A项。
A. powerful强大的;B. puzzled迷惑的;C. sad悲伤的;D. anxious焦急的。
A. Before在..之前;B.When当...时;C. After在...之后;D.Until直到。 故选A项。
A. demanded要求; B. complained抱怨;C. whistled吹口哨;D.shouted叫喊。
A. looking看;B. returning回来; C. thinking想,思考; D. saying说。故选B项。
A. offering提供;B. showing展示;C. sending发送;D. delivering运送。 故选A项。
A. break out情绪的突然发作,后接doing;B. burst into情绪的突然发作, 后接名词;C. hold back阻止,抑制;D. slow down 减速。
结合上文, “an elderly flower seller”, “Grandfather, help me!”。故选D项。
A. However然而;B. Meanwhile同时;C. Moreover此外;D. Thus因此。
故选A项。
A. envy妒忌;B. pity遗憾;C. duty义务;D. hope希望。
