It is Britain’s most cruel running race-268 miles non-stop along the Pennine Way. Jasmin Paris, who is still breastfeeding her daughter, beat 136 other competitors from 15 countries, 125 men included, to win the Montane Spine Race. She broke the men’s record by over 12 hours.

To train for the race, Paris had to get up at 4,when she would head out for runs in the hills around her home while her family were still in bed. She also went on plenty of long hikes with her baby.

She was on the course for 83 hours and 12 minutes, pausing to power nap and eat for only seven hours. She had to carry everything she needed and had to navigate using a map and compass, mostly alone and in the dark. But she was relentless. Almost 20 hours after she had finished, only two men had completed the race, with everyone else either still on the course or retired.

Top British ultra runner and former Spine Race finisher Damian Hall says, “Her performance was extraordinary-one of the great British ultra-running performances.” Olympian Jo Pavey says Paris’s performance was “awesome and inspiring.”

Since finishing, Paris has caught lots of attention, with television appearances and Chelsea Clinton tweeting about her victory. “This has been harder than the race,” she says. “At least then I just had one job to do: keep putting one foot in front of the other.” All she craves now is a good night’s sleep.

    4. How many runners took part in the Montane Spine Race according to the text?

    A. 137 B. 125 C. 136 D. 268.

    5. What did Paris think harder than running?

    A. Training for the face. B. Taking care of her young baby.

    C. Inspiring and determined D. Generous and hard-working

    C

Technology is developing fast. A gadget as small as a smartphone now has more processing power than rockets to the moon once had. New tech brings many advantages, making our lives easier and opening up new opportunities. One piece of such kit that’s been really taking off recently is the drone.

This pilotless mini aircraft, originally developed for aerial photography and warfare, is now bringing us benefits closer to home. In the last few years, tech companies such as Amazon, Alphabet and Uber have promised us delivery drones bringing goods to our doorsteps in a matter of minutes. Progress in developing them has, however, been slow.

Drones are helping to connect with and enhance the lives of people in remote locations. In the UK, the Royanl Mail wants a fleet of 500 drones to help deliver the mail to far-flung communities. Wincracers, the company developing the drones, say they can fly in fog and produce 30% fewer emissions than comparable piloted aircraft. And in Coventry in the UK, construction has started on an air hub, which will act as a base for police and delivery drones. Urban-Air Port Limited is working with car-maker Hyundai on the mini-airport, known as sky port.

Drones could also play a part in improving the health of millions of people. In Zanzíbar, for example, they’re being used to spray wetlands against malaria. And writing for BBC Future website, Harriet Constable describes an incredible development project by the University of South Australia. The plan is for drones to eventually be able to survey populations for disease by reading the blood oxygen levels of humans from the air. They’ll also be able to scan for other vital signs, like coughing and a high temperature.

“It seems the sky is the limit for what drone technology can achieve. The only thing that sometimes keeps it grounded is regulation.” Writing for the BBC, Jessica Brown says, “If our skies are to become as crowded as our streets, airspace rules need updating to prevent accidents. There are also related problems, such as noise pollution.”

    8. For what were drones first used?

    A. Aerial photography and warfare B. Bringing goods to people in need

    C. Checking for disease in a community D. Spraying farm chemicals onto plants

    9. Where does the UK’s Royal Mail want to deliver mail to by drone?

    A. The foggy areas B. An air hub

    C. A skyporl D. Distant or remote places

    10. What attitude does Jessica Brown have toward drones?

    A. Doubtful B. Opposed C. Supportive D. Pessimistic

    11. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Advances in aviation B. Delivering by drones

    C. High-tech and human life D. Solutions to air crisis

    D

A team of Japanese scientists has discovered genes that enable rice to survive high water, providing hope for better rice production in lowland areas that are affected by flooding.

The genes, called SNORKEL genes, help rice grow longer stems to deal with higher water levels. Deepwater rice generally produces low-yield (低产的) rice plants. But the researchers report they have succeeded in introducing the genes to rice varieties that are higher-yield.

According to the report, as water levels rise, accumulation of the plant hormone (激素) ethylene (乙烯) makes the SNORKEL genes start working, making stem growth more rapid. When the researchers introduced the genes into rice that does not normally survive in deep water, they were able to rescue the plants from drowning.

Motoyuki Ashikari, who headed the project, said his team is hoping to use the gene on long grain rice widely used in Southeast Asia to help stabilize production in flood areas where rice with the food-resistant gene is low in production — about one-third to one-quarter that of regular rice. “Scientifically the gene that we found is rare but clear proof of a biological ability to adapt to a difficult environment,” he said. “It’s a genetic strategy specifically to survive flooding.”

High water levels in rice field can be a serious problem. In some areas, rains can cause water levels to rise dangerously high during the growing season and flash flooding can fully cover plants for days or even weeks.

Rice is a main food for billions, and while productivity has increased dramatically since the 1960s, yields must be doubled to meet projected requirements by 2050. More than 30 percent of Asian and 40 percent of African rice land is either lowland field or deep water field.

Laurentius of Utrecht University said the study is significant because high-yield rice varieties cannot survive extremes of floods. “The introduction of these genes into high-yield varieties, using advanced breeding strategies, promises to improve the quality and quantity of rice.” he said.

    12. What can readers know about SNORKEL genes?

    A. They make rice become ripe within a shorter time.

    B. They make rice grow tall enough to survive in deep water.

    C. They help rice grow stronger whatever the areas and the climate.

    D. They prevent rice from being attacked by various insects.

    13. What will happen to the rice with the special gene, according to the text?

    A. It will be helpful for Northeast Asia.

    B. It will be softer than regular rice.

C It will be widely planted all over the world.

    D. It will increase the production of rice.

    14. What does the underlined word “projected” in Paragraph 6th probably mean?

    A. Loose. B. Remarkable. C. Planned. D. Complicated.

    15. What is the purpose of the text?

    A. To introduce a scientific research finding.

    B. To analyze a scientific experiment result,

    C. To discuss a plant developing effort.

    D. To guide the development of agriculture.
