On Aug 7, Xu Shixiao and her partner, Sun Mengya, won gold in the first women's canoe(划艇)double 500 m event at the Tokyo Games. It was also the first Olympic goldmedal for China in the event.
Yet Xu's journey to the Olympics was bumpy—she faced lots of difficulties.
In 2013, the news that women's canoeing was still not an Olympic event dealt her a heavy blow. At that time, Xu's coach suggested her either changing to another sport or retiring(退役).
It was impossible for her to change the sport at age 21. Xu gave up her career and found her first job as a saleswoman. The next year, she was promoted as a human resources manager.
When Xu went to work as usual in a company in Nanchang, J iangxi province, five years ago, she was surprised to get a call from her former coach, asking about her willingness to return to canoeing and compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Xu quickly made her decision.
"I quit(辞职)my job, told my family about it and went back to training three days later. There was not much time left for me to prepare for the Olympics," Xu recalls. "I never thought that one day I could go back to the sport. Now that I have started again, I will do mybest."
To catch the opportunity to go back to canoeing on the international level, Xu started her training—"as cruel as hell". She began her daily exercises early morning and ended at 10:30 p.m. Every day, she would set several detailed goals for her training. "Only when I reached all my daily goals. I would go ashore," Xu says.
The more than two months of grueling(艰辛的)training finally paid off. Xu won two gold medals at the 13th National Games in two women's canoe events, which meant she would be part of the national team to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.
24. What does the underlined word "bumpy" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Rough. B. Smooth. C. Positive. D. Normal.
25. What did Xu do after her retirement?
A. She started up a business. B. She changed to another sport.
C. She worked in a company. D. She got promoted in her thirties.

C. The benefits of canoeing. D. The best time to exercise.
27. What message does the author want to convey in the text?
A. Stay true to yourself. B. Practice makes perfect.

Children should do housework. That's a controversial(有争议的)idea, though not everyone will admit it. A few parents will say that their children are too busy for housework. Many more of us assign(分派)housework, or say we believe in them, but the housework just doesn't get done.
That's a problem. For starters, housework is good for kids. Being a part of the routine work of running a household helps children develop an awareness of the needs of others, while at the same time contributing to their emotional well-being.
One small study, done over a period of 25 years, found that the best predictor(预测)for young adults' success in their mid-20s was whether they participated in household tasks at age 3 or 4. Those early shared responsibilities extended to a sense of responsibility in other areasof their lives.
But for all that their help matters, few kids are doing much around the house at all. In a survey of 1,000 American adults, 75 percent said they bel1eved regular housework made kids "more responsible". Yet while 82 percent reported having had regular housework growing up, only 56 percent of those with children said they required them to do housework.
Sports and homework are not get-out-of-housework-free cards. The goal, after all, is to raise adults who can balance a caring role in their families and communities with whatever lifetime achievement goals they choose. Housework teaches that balance.
What should you do when getting children to do housework? Accept no excuses. Don't worry if you must repeat yourself again and again. If you re spending more time getting the child to do this job than it would take to do it yourself, then you're doing it right. Can a payment help? Maybe. But if you're trying to teach kids to share the responsibility of a home, paying them for routine housework is not the right message.
28. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. Very few children get housework done.
B. Children are very busy with housework.
C. Housework is a must-do for parents.
D. Family members should respect each other.
29. What is found in the small study?
A. Housework helps a man live a happy life.
B. A man's success depends on his housework.
C. Housework benefits a sense of responsibility.
D. A child must start doing housework at Age 3.
30. What does the author advise parents to do in the last paragraph?
A. Balance housework and study. B. Help the child do housework positively.
C. Do housework by themselves. D. Pay the child for housework.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. Adults Do Less Housework in the US B. Housework Matters to Children
C. Parents Words Speak Louder D. Children Need More Care at Home

Over the last two days, much of Spain has been coated with dust, and the skies have turned bright orange. A huge cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert is causing the strange weather. The dust cloud is expected to spread to other parts of Europe.
Across much of Spain on Tuesday morning, a thin layer(层)of red dust coated everything outside. From streets to sidewalks to balconies, everything was covered with a layer of dust. As the sun rose, the dust in the air turned the skies in some cities a strange orange. The cause of the dust and unusual sky colour wasn't a forest fire, but dust from the Sahara Desert.
Every year, a large cloud of dust rises from the Sahara Desert. It's called the Saharan Air Layer. Usually, it crosses the Atlantic Ocean as part of a natural cycle that helps develop farmland and beaches in Central and South America.
But sometimes, depending on the weather, the layer of dust gets forced to the north. Large sandstorms in northern Africa lift sand and dust into the air, where it gets blown towards Spain. Though the particles(微粒)in the air come from sand, they're much more likedust than sand at a beach.
These kinds of storms aren't unknown 1n Spain. In fact, it has a special name. It's called a "calima". This calima is so large that it can be seen from space. A NASA scientist who studies weather in the atmosphere says it's like a river of dust in the air. That river of dust has met with a river of wet air driven by strong winds.
Spain's weather service described the dust storm as being "very intense(强烈)". At one point on Tuesday, the air quality in Madrid was the worst in the world. Government health experts warned people not to go outside without a mask, and to keep their windows and doors closed at home.

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn't read books in silence would have to answer her when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behaviour.
But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn't been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the room I heard Josh ask Nick, "Can I trade my candies for your toy?" At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, "Let's sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow." And so it went all around me, until about half of the students communicated with each other.
After a while. I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill's instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, "Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?" As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.
Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, "If you were 1alking while I was gone, then please stand up." The guilt(内疚)suddenly weighed heavily on me. "I shouldn't have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me." I thought. Then, I summoned up(鼓起)my couragc to stand up, worried about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my surprise, no one followed me and I was the only one in the classroom standing.
With Mrs. Hill's encouragement, another student stood up. |

第二节
One possible version:
To my surprise, no one followed me and I was the only one in the class room standing. I lowered my head, alone and filled with fear. After looking around for a while, Mrs. Hill walked towards me. Strangely, she asked in a soft voice, "Why did you dare to stand up? I said I wanted to be honest and that I realized what I had done was wrong. Unexpectedly, Mrs. Hill was quite amazed by my answer and praised me for that. Then she returned to the front of the classroom and explained why we should be honest.
With Mrs. Hill's encouragement, another student stood up. Then more students followed until about half of the students stood up. Seeing it, Mrs. Hill praised us for our courage. Then, she asked us to sit down. We continued reading books. After we finished, Mrs. Hill reminded us to remember that everyone should be responsible for his behaviour. We all agreed with her. And I was happy that in a way I set a good example to my classmates.

M: I don't think the bad weather will last long. It changes so quickly.
W: I hope so. We have planned to visit the square and the garden, but we have to call it off.

W: Good idea. Thanks a billion.
(Text 6)

W: Are you joking? The train will leave in an hour. It is seven now. Where did you put it?

M: No, it is not here. I have to buy another ticket.

M: Something is biting me!
W: Me too. I can't stop moving. They are everywhere in the room!
M: Do you have any bug spray?
W: No, I forgot to buy some.
M: Then we have to put up with it.
W: We can cover ourselves with beer! If they bite us, they'll get drunk and fall asleep.
M: Good idea! Let's do it right now! It doesn't work. What should we do?
W: Run! They are thirsty for more!
(Text 8)
W: The house owner will take back his house next month.
M: I feel sorry for you. It's very hard to find a good house here.
W: Do you know any places?
M: Well, I guess I can ask around to see if anyone's got a room or an apartment for rent.
W: Thank you. I think I should also have a look at the Internet to see if anyone's got a spare room.
M: How much are you expecting to spend?
W: I can only afford 1,000 yuan a month.
M: It looks as if you'll have to get a place far away.
W: It doesn't matter, but it needs to be close to the subway station or the bus station.
M: Anything you need to have in the place?
W: I want a bedroom with a bathroom, and it'll be better if the bedroom is on the sunny side.

W: Maybe we will. Bye.
(Text 10)
Welcome to the United States, ladies and gentlemen. Now I'd like to tell you what you should do when you become ill. If you feel sick and want to see a doctor, check with the manager of your hotel. They may call a doctor for you. American doctors are busy all the time, and it may be difficult to see the doctor immediately, especially if you are well enough to go to the doctor's office. If you have difficulty explaining what is troubling you in English, your tour guide may be able to help you.
You may also go to the nearest hospital, especially if you need immediate attention. If you are seriously hurt and alone, call 911 and the person there will get help for you. Don't be afraid if you re sent to the hospital. In the United States, people are often sent to hospitals so that doctors can use the special machines and services for tests and treatment. Unfortunately, the United States does not have a national system to help pay medical bills.
