Four Famous Castles In Britain
The country is abundant of castles, some ruined, and others still surviving today. They are a reminder of their either glorious or violent past. Read on for the one that interests you most.
Bodiam Castle, East Sussex
Built primarily for defence in the 14th century, the castle looks perfectly protected from the outside. You might think you could expect much of the same inside it, but sadly not. The war reduced the inside to ruins. The fairytale appearance of the castle standing within its broad moat(护城河)makes an indescribably spectacular picture.
Hever Castle, Kent
As a queen's childhood home, it is the perfect picture-book castle. Its thick creeper- covered walls are surrounded by double channels. With large collections including portraits, paintings, furniture and treasures, it attracts a lot of tourists here. Among its collections are two private books signed by the queen herself, which are historically valuable.
Windsor Castle, Berkshire
If you want to have a better understanding of more than 900 years’royal(王室的)life, then there really is no better place to visit than this splendid castle. It is the largest and oldest castle that is still occupied now in the world. In 1992, a fire swept through the castle, destroying 115 rooms. The repairing was completed five years later.
Tintagel Castle, Cornwall
Few places can compete with Tintagel Castle in romance and mystery. The ruins that you see today date from the 13th century, which, however, didn't stop it to become a popular at- traction. Due to the legend of King Arthur, for centuries the castle has fired writers' and artists' imaginations on how the heroic king's life began here.
21. What do Bodiam Castle and Hever Castle have in common?
A. They are surrounded by water. B. They own many art collections.
C. They were built for defence. D. They are still lying in ruins
22. In which castle are there people living now?
A. Bodiam Castle, East Sussex.
B. Hever Castle, Kent.
C. Windsor Castle, Berkshire.
D. Tintagel Castle, Cornwall.
23. What is Tintagel Castle well-known for?

B. The legend of a great king.

Most of us have original stories in which our hobby comes from or how it becomes a job we love to do. Here's my story. It all started when I lived in California. I was exposed to graffiti (涂鸦)written on buildings and walls almost everywhere. But I thought that I could draw much more characters and fun things with my pen than what could be created by graffiti. However, it was there growing and creeping(渐渐出现)into my life one day.
As I was older, I moved to St. Louis and saw the graffiti all over downtown. I was very curious as to how it got onto the walls. I happened to see a movie called Breakin', where I learned graffiti is one of the four elements of hip-hop and first saw how it was written with spray paint. Since that, I have been totally immersed into it and wanted to try it by myself.
I set about learning how to draw letters and make them look fashionable as what I saw on the walls in St. Louis. I practiced drawing my name and other people's names in bubble letters, which was the first step of learning how to write graffiti, essentially. By the end of middle school, I was ready to go out to write on the walls, but it turned out unsatisfactory. Then I learned my craft and the structure of graffiti from a real graffiti writer. I also met more minded-like people who became my good friends afterwards. We wrote graffiti for the first time on stock cans and then found walls to write on. Later on, we discovered a graffiti yard where we could practice.
It was one of the best things that ever happened to me. From there, we found our way to our career. Over 20 years later, we're still engaged in our craft and enjoying every second of writing. It just goes to show that something we love can be our lifestyle.
24. What did the author think of graffiti at first?
A. It didn't look real.
B. It was out of date.
C. It was limited in contents.
D. It damaged the public space. 25. Why did the author mention the film Breakin'?
A. It helped him write graffiti well.
B. It inspired his interest in graffiti.
C. It was very popular in St. Louis.
D. It promoted graffiti to become a hit.
26. What did the author mainly talk about in paragraph 3?
A. His friendship with others.
B. His achievement in graffiti.
C. His gratitude to his teacher.
D. His learning to write graffiti.
27. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. My path to a graffiti writer
B. St. Louis, where my career began
C. Graffiti, a new fashion in the US
D. My childhood memory about graffiti
C
Facial images can be used to identify signs of disease in diagnosis(诊断). For example, abnormal changes in eye movement can indicate poor visual function and visual developmental problems. However, facial images also record other information about the patients, including their race, sex, age and mood. Due to privacy concerns, people often hesitate to share their facial images for public medical research or electronic health records, blocking the development of digital medical care.
The researchers now develop a digital mask, which inputs an original video of a patient's face and outputs a video based on the use of a deep learning algorithm (算法)and 3D reconstruction. At the same time, the digital mask can remove as much of the patient's personal biometric (生物统计的)information as possible.
Next, the researchers tested how useful the masks were in clinical practice and found that diagnosis through the digital masks agrees with that carried out through the original videos. This suggested that the technology was accurate enough in clinical practice. The team also confirmed that the digital masks can also avoid artificial intelligence-powered facial recognition.
The team surveyed randomly(随机地)selected patients attending clinics to test their attitudes towards digital masks. Over 80% of patients believed the digital masks would ease their privacy concerns and they expressed an increased willingness to share their personal in- formation if such a measure was carried out.
Professor Patrick from the University of Cambridge said, “Digital masks offer a practical approach to protecting information from facial images, while still allowing the information to be useful to clinicians. ” This could make telemedicine-phone and video consultations, much more practicable, making healthcare delivery more efficient especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. If tele- medicine is to be widely adopted, then we need to overcome the barriers and concerns related to privacy protection. The digital mask is an important step in this direction.
28. What is the problem with the facial images in diagnosis?
A. Its result may be inaccurate.
B. Its process is too complicated.
C. It may reveal patients' privacy.
D. It fails to observe eye movement.
29. What can we learn about the digital mask?
A. It preserves biometric information of patients.
B. It can prevent the individual being identified.
C. It has high requirements for the original videos.
D. It helps doctors diagnose disease more accurately.
30. What is Professor Patrick's attitude towards the digital mask?
A. Objective.
B. Cautious.
C. Critical.
D. Supportive.
31. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. The significance of the digital mask.
B. The future development of telemedicine.
C. The barriers to protecting patients’ privacy.
D. The practical ways to protect patients' privacy.
D
Agriculture may feed the world, but it is also contributing to environmental problems. Agriculture production uses about 70% of the Earth's fresh water and makes up about a third of greenhouse gas emissions. But it doesn't have to. Farming is moving inside, and farmers aren't exactly what they used to be.
Take for example Grover and Phil, two robots, or farmers of the future, working at Iron Ox, a farm tech company in Silicon Valley, planning to set up farms around the country in or- der to grow crops closer to consumers in a greener way. “We have different robots that are looking after the plants. They can check and scan them for issues, and change the amount of nutrients plants get and the amount of water they get, "explained Brandon Alexander, CEO of Iron Ox.
Iron Ox’s method is very different from what Alexander calls the“spray(喷洒)and pray” approach to agriculture on a Texas farm, where he grew up and more chemicals create more quantity at the expense of quality. “Besides, a lot of the water in field farming gets just washed out and never actually reaches the plants. And when 70% of your fresh water is going into farming, only 10% of that actually reaches the plants. It's just generating a lot of waste, ”he said. However, the indoor farming allows farmers to grow any crop at any time, regardless of climate change. It also uses hydroponics(无土栽培),growing crops without soil so water goes directly to the roots.
“In the indoor farming industry today, even with all the investments into it, these investments are a drop in the bucket(桶) in spite of the great potential of this new industry," he added.
Iron Ox is now magnifying its business in more states. Alexander says the company will produce about 100 times more produce over the next 18 months than it's currently producing to satisfy greater needs.
32. Which of the following may be Grover and Phil's work?
A. Producing nutrients for crops.
B. Curing plants of their diseases.
C. Watering plants scientifically.
D. Delivering produce to consumers.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Chemicals contribute a lot to the quality of crops.
B. Hydroponics is impractical in growing crops now.
C. It takes much more time for crops to grow indoors.
D. Indoor farming has advantages over traditional one.
34. What does Alexander say about indoor farming in paragraph 4?
A. It causes a waste of more water.
B. It needs buckets to grow crops.
C. It is unlikely to attract investments.
D. Its investments are far from enough.
35. What does the underlined word “magnifying" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Expanding.
B. Changing.
C. Reducing.
D. Quitting.

M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages-you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Mon-day-Spanish; Tuesday-Italian; Wednesday-German; and Friday-French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

M: My name is John Croft, For three years and six months, I worked as a taxi driver for Downtown Taxi in Vancouver. I drove my cab five days a week from 3: 00 in the afternoon until around 12: 00 at night. There were traffic jams every afternoon, but it didn't bother me, Most passengers were nice enough, although I can remember most of them. I liked to show tourists our beautiful city. A lot of tourists from Asia visited Vancouver. In the evening, I took people out to restaurants, clubs and theatres. It was interesting to see people dressed in their best clothes for parties, The most interesting customer I had was a man dressed as a bird! I can still re- member the scene clearly and I think I'll never forget it. My cab was always clean and I always tried to be friendly. The trip to the airport was usually my biggest tip. I liked my job and made a comfortable living. However, as we know, it is really a tiring job. So I don't drive a taxi anymore. Now I have lots of free time, but sometimes I miss meeting new people.
