A week ago I went on a drive to explore an area of Eastern Washington that I’m not familiar with at all. It was the rolling countryside north of where I live, near the little town of Manson.
The geography here is dry but lower, wider, and full of rolling hills. The area miles intothe distance towards the East. It seemslike a very rural, mainly uninhabited (杳无人烟的) area, but actually, as you explore, you quickly realize that there are houses even in the most remote (遥远的) looking areas, little pockets of human life here and there.
I think that people who live in these areas are either retired, working remotely from home, or really need the peace and energy that the quiet countryside can give.
Driving up a lonely, winding road, suddenly there was a flash of color above that passed over the car. Of all things it was a peacock (孔雀). What on earth was it doing in this remote area? It seemed really out of place. It flew from one side of the road to the hill on the other, joining eight others that were already there, enjoying the sun. Their colors were brilliant. And yes, they seemed more comfortable in that area than in palace gardens. They are, after all, very much like pheasants (野鸡), just much more beautiful. Someone nearby must have attended them. I could only see one female; of course she wasn’t as beautiful to look at as the males. Her feather was much more like the grass and rocks of her surroundings.
These little day trips always seem to bring surprises, even in remote areas. There is always something that will prove to be unexpected.
4. How was the area that the author explored?
A. It was an area of hills near the little town of Manson.
B. It was dry but lower, wider, and full of visitors.
C. It was an area without human life existing.
D. It was a rural but busy area.
5. What does “a flash of color” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The sunlight. B. A peacock. C. The car. D. A pheasant.
6. How many peacocks did the author see?
A. One. B. Eight. C. Nine. D. Eleven.
7. What can we learn about the peacocks?
A. Female peacocks are more beautiful than male ones.
B They showed great interest in the car.
C. They suited more to palace gardens.
D. They must be raised by human.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,记述了作者旅行中的所见所闻。

Located in the picturesque Goulburn Valley in country Victoria is the Kialla Central Primary School, attended by just 77 students, four teachers and one excellent principal (校长). After experiencing epidemic lockdown period (疫情封闭期) that forced them into remote learning for months, the boys and girls of Kialla have just one message — THANK YOU!
“We never expected such a wonderful outpouring of thanks,” principal Debbie Humphries tells Woman’s Day from the school’s playground where the students have gathered to praisethe devoted (有献身精神的) staff who supported them during these recent tough times.
“Spending time with these amazing children, we found one unique quality really shines through their exceptional kindness. From Foundation One through to Year 6, all 77 come together as one, each adding their little bit of magic to the mix,” says Debbie, 52. “Our school motto, ‘A small school doing big school things!’, summarized what we aim to do every day—to go beyond the normal course of duty, to schedule their education according to their individual strengths, and weaknesses, and give them a chance to shine and be their best.”
“I’ve been here at Kialla Central since its foundation,” Harry, 11, explains confidently, “Thanks to the best teachers in Australia, actually the universe, lockdown and remote learning was like being in the classroom—only more fun! Now I’m in Grade 6 and a school captain, and it’s my job to help teach the little ones that we must always look out for each other,” he says.
Annika, who is honored to captain the school with her good mate Harry, is convinced Miss H and the Kialla staff are real-life angels, without the wings! “During lockdown, they changed everything to make learning more interesting. We made Mother’s Day cards as part of our art lesson, and they organized flowers from a local community garden to gift to our mums. If one of us was having a birthday, they all got in their cars and drove by our houses singing Happy Birthday!” she says.
“We’re very proud to know our hard work has paid off — just look at those smiles!” says principal Debbie.

The State of California is depending on its forests to help cut down planet-warming CO2. But that climate-change strategy may be risky, as new research from the University of California, Irvine(UCI)reports that trees in California’s mountains and open spaces are dying from wildfires and other pressures — and fewer new trees are filling the blank.
“The forests are not keeping up with these large fires,” said study co-author James Randerson, the Ralph J. and Carol M. Cicerone Professor of Earth system science at UCI. Acrossthe whole state, tree cover area has dropped 6.7% since 1985. “These are big changes in lessthan forty years,” he said. It’s the first time that researchers have been able to measure tree population fall in California, and find out the reasons(wildfires and woodcutting).
For the study, the UCI-led team used satellite data from the USGS and NASA’s Landsat mission to study plant changes between 1985 and 2021. They found that one of the most obvious falls in tree cover was in southern California, where 14% of the tree population in local mountain had disappeared, maybe everlastingly.
“The ability. of forests to recover(恢复)from fire appears to be dwindling in the south,” said Jonathan Wang, a researcher in Randerson’s research group, who led the study coming out in AGU Advances. “At the same time, the state’s coverage of bushes and grasses is rising, which could mean more everlasting ecosystem shifts(生态系统转化).”
“The speed and scale of fall in tree cover is different across the state. Tree cover in the Sierra Nevada, for example, stayed relatively unchanged until around 2010, then began dropping suddenly. Fortunately, in the north, there’s plenty of recovery after fire,” said Wang, perhaps because of the area’s higher rainfall and cooler temperatures. “This threat(威胁) to California’s climate solutions isn’t going away anytime soon,” Wang said. “We might be entering a new age of bigger fire and vulnerable(易受损的) forests.”
12. What mainly helped California cut down CO2?
A. Rich forests. B. Less vehicles.
C. Energy saving. D. Fine weather.
13. What has caused the drop of tree cover in the past few years?
A. Poor soil.
B. Continual floods.
C. High demand for farmland and food.
D. Large wildfires and people’s cutting trees.
14. What does the underlined word “dwindling” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Suitable. B. Falling. C. Obvious. D. Boring.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. California’s trees will die out in the future
B. California’s environment will face a big challenge
C. The reasonfor California wildfires has been found out
D. Wildfires seriously threaten California’s tree cover
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述野火导致加利福尼亚州树木的数量不断下降。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“The State of California is depending on its forests to help cut down planet-warming CO2.(加利福尼亚州依靠森林来帮助减少使地球变暖的二氧化碳)”可知,加利福尼亚州依靠森林来减少大气中的二氧化碳。故选A项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“It’s the first time that researchers have been able to measure tree population fall in California, and find out the reasons(wildfires and woodcutting).(这是研究人员第一次能够测量加州树木数量的下降,并找出原因(野火和伐木))”可知,加利福尼亚州树木减少的原因是野火和伐木。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段最后一句“They found that one of the most obvious falls in tree cover was in southern California, where 14% of the tree population in local mountain had disappeared, maybe everlastingly.(他们发现,树木覆盖率下降最明显的地方之一是南加州,当地山上14%的树木消失了,也许是永远消失了)”及第四段中“At the same time, the state’s coverage of bushes and grasses is rising, which could mean more everlasting ecosystem shifts(生态系统转化).(与此同时,该州的灌木和草的覆盖率正在上升,这可能意味着更多持久的生态系统变化)”可知,森林里树木消失也许是永远地消失了,同时该州的灌木和草的覆盖率正在上升在南部;由此可推知,划线词所在句意为:火灾后森林的恢复能力似乎正在减弱,dwindling意为“下降”。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“…trees in California’s mountains and open spaces are dying from wildfires and other pressures — and fewer new trees are filling the blank.(……加州山上和空地上的树木正因野火和其他压力而死亡——填补空白的新树越来越少)”可知,本文主要讲述野火导致加利福尼亚的树木数量下降。故选D项。

I’m sorry to know that your best friend and you broke up over a small thing, for which you feel regret. I understand quite well that you are upset and have a strong will to recover your friendship.
I recommend that you take the first step actively. It is not unusual for teenagers of our age to have disagreements. But don’t let them affect your relationship unless they are very important. So, I think you should be the first to reach out the hand of friendship because it depends on you to be the icebreaker of you two.
