Did yu knw that all human beings have a “cmfrt zne” regulating the distance
they stand frm smene when they talk? This distance varies in interesting ways
amng peple f different cultures.
Greeks, sme f the Eastern Mediterranean, and many f thse frm Suth
America nrmally stand quite clse tgether when they talk, ften mving their faces

They put a sympathetic hand n a persn’s shulder t demnstrate warmth f feeling,
r an arm arund him in sympathy; they pat an arm in reassurance (放心) r strke a
child’s head in fndness; they readily take smene’s arm t help him acrss a street r
direct him alng an unfamiliar rute. T many peple — especially thse frm Asia r
the Mslem (穆斯林) cuntries - such bdily cntact is unwelcme, especially if dne
with the left hand. The left hand carries n special significance in the US. Many
Americans are simple left and use that hand mre.
18.What wuld mst prbably happen when a Greek meets a Nrth American?
A.The Greek keeps 12 inches apart frm the Nrth American.
B.The Greek can keep cmfrtable distance with the Nrth American.
C.The Nrth American accepts the Greek distance when they becme friends.
D.The Nrth American keeps backing away while the Greek keeps mving clser.
19.Which f the fllwing statements is true abut the peple in the United States?

“The main result is that hikers that heard the birdsng respnded t questins that
shwed a higher level f well-being cmpared t thse that did nt hear the birdsng,”
