During a pandemic (流行病), for many reasons, there are lots of poor parents who are isolated(隔离)with their kids, or roommates who are stuck together in an apartment. But what about the people who have nobody to talk to?
It is common that people feel lonely. However, during the pandemic, this situation can be much worse for experiences like long-time hospital stays or being unable to move due to poor health, disability or age.
Recently, a friendly robot named Robin got a test run in the children's treatment center of the Wigmore Clinic in Yerevan. About as tall as an 8-year-old child, Robin's plastic body and square head may not put you in mind of a human partner, but its face screen containing two big eyes and expressive brows (眉毛) is attractive, which can help children forget their stress for a while.
A hospital can be very stressful for anybody. And the time of treatment, and recovery might seem tiresomely long to an adult stuck in a hospital bed. For a child who can't play with his or her friends or sometimes even family, the long course and boring atmosphere seem unbearable. That's where Robin comes in. It can recognize facial expressions and use the mood of a talk to build personalized, natural conversations and dialogues with a lonely child in the way another child might use. Robin also plays games, tells stories, and makes children take part in various other activities.
According to Expper Technologies, the makers of Robin, during the program with Wigmore Clinic, Robin improved the experience of children in the hospital by 26 percent over those who did not have the chance to play with Robin, and reduced their stress levels by 34 percent during their hospital stay. Mary, whose son was one of those users, said, "Thanks to Robin, my son became happy every day during this pandemic," John Smith, a father of a five-year-old girl in the clinic, told a reporter, “Robin is a great partner. It brings big smiles to my daughter's face.”
14.Why does the author mention the experiences of people having difficulty moving?
A. To encourage people to fight against the pandemic bravely.
B. To point out people’s loneliness during the pandemic.
C. To draw people's attention to healthy living.
D. To call on people to care for those in need.
15.What can we learn about robot Robin from Paragraph 4?
A. Its functions need further tests.
B. Its design is based on some children’s ideas.
C. It is quite difficult to operate for the young patients.
D. It can cheer children up with great communication skills.
16.What’s the young patients’ attitude towards the application of robot Robin?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
17.What could be the best title for the text?
A. Robots Have Been Used to Treat Patients in Hospital
B. Robots Have Brought Both Benefits and Challenges
C. Robot Robin Is Introduced into People's Daily Life
D. Robot Robin Helps Make Sick Children's Life Easier

Did you know that all human beings have a “comfort zone” regulating the distance they stand from someone when they talk? This distance varies in interesting ways among people of different cultures.
Greeks, some of the Eastern Mediterranean, and many of those from South America normally stand quite close together when they talk, often moving their faces even closer as they warm up in a conversation. North Americans find this awkward and often back away a few inches. Studies have found that they tend to feel most comfortable at about 21 inches apart. In much of Asia and Africa, there’s even more space between two speakers in conversation. This greater space subtly lends an aim of dignity and respect. This matter of space is nearly always unconscious, but it is interesting to observe.
This difference applies also to the closeness with which people sit together, the extent to which they lean over one another in conversation, how they move as they argue or make an emphatic point. In the United States, for example, people try to keep their bodies apart even in a crowded elevator, in Paris they take it as it comes!
Although North Americans have a relatively wide “comfort zone” for talking, they communicate a great deal with their hands - not only with gesture but also with touch. They put a sympathetic hand on a person’s shoulder to demonstrate warmth of feeling, or an arm around him in sympathy; they pat an arm in reassurance (放心) or stroke a child’s head in fondness; they readily take someone’s arm to help him across a street or direct him along an unfamiliar route. To many people — especially those from Asia or the Moslem (穆斯林) countries - such bodily contact is unwelcome, especially if done with the left hand. The left hand carries no special significance in the US. Many Americans are simple left and use that hand more.
18. What would most probably happen when a Greek meets a North American?
A. The Greek keeps 12 inches apart from the North American.
B. The Greek can keep comfortable distance with the North American.
C. The North American accepts the Greek distance when they become friends.
D. The North American keeps backing away while the Greek keeps moving closer.
19. Which of the following statements is true about the people in the United States?
A. Their sense of distance has nothing to do with dignity or respect.
B. They tend to keep the bodily space unconsciously.
C. They avoid any bodily contact in communicating.
D. Their communication cannot be carried out without hand gesture.
20. It can be inferred from the passage that the Frenchmen prefer ______.
A. to move closer when they communicate
B. to use more body language to interact with others
C. to sit farther apart when they talk in a large room
D. to have physical contact in a crowded elevator
21. Touching with the left hand is regarded as ______ in the Moslem countries.
A. a meaningless gesture B. an offensive act
C. a sincere greeting D. an incomprehensible joke
D
There have been many studies that show being in nature is good for your health. Walking in the woods is good for your well-being. Living near trees can help you live longer. But when you go for a walk in the woods, what is it particularly about being in nature or being outdoors that makes you feel good? Is it the sights or smells or sounds? A new study finds it might have something to do with the birds you hear while you have a walk.
Researchers from California Polytechnic State University analyzed how much the natural sounds people hear when they’re outdoors influence well-being. They found that the “chorus (合唱)” of birds singing increased well-being in protected natural areas.
For the study, researchers placed 10 hidden, evenly spaced speakers(扬声器) on two parts of trails(小路) in the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks in Colorado. They played recorded songs from 11 kinds of birds. The researchers take turns to play the birdsong for a few hours a day for a week, and then turned off the speakers for a week at a time. They interviewed hikers after they passed through the areas with the speakers.
“The main result is that hikers that heard the birdsong responded to questions that showed a higher level of well-being compared to those that did not hear the birdsong,” Biology Professor Clinton Francis, who led the research, says.
Hikers who heard more birdsong on the first part of the trail said they felt better. Those who heard more birdsong on the second part reported that they thought more birds lived along that part of the trail. This feeling of more birds helps make the hikers feel better. “With the chorus, we were able to show that natural sounds have a clear effect on the quality of hikers’ experiences,” says Francis.
22.What's the function of the questions in paragraph 1?
A. To advise people to walk in nature.
B. To bring in the topic of the text.
C. To call on people to care about nature.
D. To raise doubt about the research done before.
23. Why were the speakers placed along the trails?
A. To broadcast chorus live. B. To remind hikers of their health.
C. To play sounds of different birds. D. To improve people's well-being.
24. What was the final step of the research?
A. Recording. B. Interviewing. C. Photographing. D. Comparing.
25. What is the best title for the text?
A. Hearing birdsongs is good for people's health.
B. Walking in forests help people live longer.
C. Being in nature is good for people's heath.
D. Raising birds improves people’s living quality.
