Fr many English learners learning t write fluently in English is much mre challenging than learning t speak fluently. Even fr advanced level learners, written cmmunicatins can cme much mre slwly in English than spken cmmunicatins.
Writing in English needs t fllw rules f grammar much mre clsely than in spken English. Fr example, if smene says ‘Please brrw me yur pen’ in cnversatin, it’s clear frm the cntext that the speaker intended t say ‘Please lend me yur pen’. In written cmmunicatin, wrds are even mre imprtant because they lack visual cntext. Especially if yu are wrking in a business setting, making mistakes can cause miscmmunicatin which might lead t prblems. In cnversatin, yu can smile and make a gd impressin. With writing, all yu have are yur wrds.
Imagine if yu’re at a party. Yu might have a cnversatin with smene and nly understand a few wrds. Hwever, because yu’re in the cntext f a party, yu can make all the mistakes yu want. It desn’t matter. Everyne is having fun. When it cmes t writing, there’s nt s much rm fr errr.
Spken English is much mre spntaneus (自发的) than written English. It’s lser and mistakes dn’t necessarily impact yur ability t cmmunicate clearly. In writing, it’s imprtant t think abut hw t write t the intended audience. Yu need t understand wh will be reading yur writing. It takes time t figure these things ut.
We expect mre f what we read. We expect it t be true, entertaining r infrmative. When there’s an expectatin, there’s pressure t perfrm well. With speaking, with the pssible exceptin f giving a presentatin, there’s nt nearly s much pressure-unless yu’re clsing a business deal.
It is imprtant when teaching written English skills - especially fr business English - t be aware f the challenges that learners will face when learning t functin in a written English envirnment
28. Accrding t the secnd paragraph, why are wrds mre imprtant in written cmmunicatin?
A. Because writers can nly rely n wrds.
B. Because grammar nly applies t writing.
C. Because written wrds are mre expressive.
D. Because written English invlves little visual effect.
29. In which situatin is a persn expected t have the mst pressure?
A. When taking part in parties. B. When giving a presentatin
C. When having a talk with friends. D. When hanging ut with business partners.
30. What will the authr prbably cntinue t write after the last paragraph?
A. Tips n hw t teach English writing skills.
B. Functins f writing skills in business English.
C. Difference between spken and written English.
D. Challenges peple will meet in making business.
31. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. Why Is It Easy t Speak Fluently? B. What Cntributes t a Gd Writing?
C. Hw Can a Persn Imprve His Writing? D. Why Is Writing Mre Difficult than Speaking?
D
Yu’re lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. G t sleep, yu tell yurself. Yu shut yur eyes tight, frce yur bdy t relax, and wait fr the pleasant sleep t cme. But nthing happens. It’s 3 a. m. , and yu’re still staring at the ceiling.
We have all been in this situatin. Try as we might, it is nearly impssible t cnsciusly will yurself t sleep. Sleep cmes t thse wh let their mind wander and fcus n anything ther than sleep itself. Cunt sheep, cntrl yur breathing, listen t an audibk (有声书), r whatever - s lng as it turns yur mind frm wanting t sleep. This is a cmmn example f the “law f reversed effrt. “

Yu are tld t hld the handlebars, t push ff with this ft, t pedal at that speed, t hld yur balance here, and s n. When riding, we knw all these instructins, but we d nt try t d them. They just happen. In Huxley’s wrds, it’s “cmbining relaxatin with activity. “
There’s a spiritual way f viewing the “law f reversed effrt” as well. It’s smething that has a much lnger histry than Aldus Huxley -- it’s the Daist idea f “Wu Wei.” It is t walk the path that pens up and push the dr that gives. Call it fate, divine (神圣的) calling, r whatever, but Wu Wei is t stp ding what yu think is right, and t let yurself be pulled by sme ther pwer. Wu Wei is the grass bending in the wind. It’s the stick riding dwn the river.
There are many mments in life when trying harder makes things wrse. When yu have a msquit (蚊子) bite, a brken bne, r a nsebleed, yu leave it be. Picking and tapping nly wrsen the prblem. S, t, with a lt f life’s majr mments.
32. Why is the example f the failure t falling asleep mentined in the text?
A. T shw hw cmmn sleep lss is.
B. T intrduce the Law f Reversed Effrt.
C. T recmmend effective ways t get t sleep
D. T prve the impssibility f willing urselves t sleep.
33. What might help us learn riding a bike accrding t Paragraph 3?
A. Making reversed effrt. B. Trying ur best t practice.
C. Riding in a relaxed manner. D. Remembering t fllw instructins.
34. Which might be an example f “Wu Wei” accrding t the text?
A. Ignre a msquit bite.
B. Sail against a strng wind.
C. Will yurself t sleep when suffering sleep lss.
D. Remind yurself f instructins when riding a bike.
35. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Wu Wei, a Daist Idea B. Hw t Deal with Sleep Lss
C. Reversed Effrt: Key t Success D. The Harder Yu Try, the Harder Yu Fall
