One day, my brother and I were coming back from the islands where we often risked going and got more fish than others. All at once, the sky was covered with dark clouds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible storm. A huge wave covered our boat and we nearly fell into the sea. My brother put his mouth close to my ear and cried out “Moskoe-strom!” The moment I heard the word I became very frightened. I knew what he meant by that one word well enough.
With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of the whirlpool (漩涡). We were hopeless. Nothing could save us. I felt sick, as if I was falling from a mountain top in a dream. We went round and round, nearer and nearer to the horrible edge of the whirlpool. It may appear strange, but at that moment, when we were on the edge of the whirlpool, I felt calmer than when we were moving towards it. I began to think how amazing a thing it was to die in such a way, and how wonderful it was to see the power of nature. Suddenly, we went over the edge. I thought my life was over. But moment after moment passed, and I was still safe.
The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed. I saw clearly that there were other objects in the whirlpool—trees and barrels (水桶). After a while, I became curious about the whirlpool itself. I then made three important observations. The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly. So I tied myself to a barrel to help me float. I tried to make my brother understand, but he was too frightened and stayed in the boat. Without waiting, I jumped into the sea to try and escape.

The Christmas Spirit Strikes Again
I always dreamed of making a big surprise of a lifetime. Thanks to a little determination, some luck, and a generous helping of Christmas Spirit, my dream became a reality.
My family is Canadian, although my sister moved down to Australia a few years ago to study. She was graduating just before Christmas, but due to my own scholarly schedule back home, I would be unable to make it down in time for her graduation. She was understandably disappointed, and I felt guilty that I wasn’t able to be there for her on this special occasions.
While I was talking to my professor the week before my sister’s graduation, she commented, “Well, if you want to go, just go ahead!" I couldn’t believe my luck! I nearly jumped for joy. “Just make sure you get permission from administrator (行政主管),” she added. My heart sank. The administration at my school was infamous for denying any sort of time-off requests. I almost didn’t bother asking, because I knew it would be a waste of time. But something in me decided to try, just in case. Maybe it was the hope that the Christmas Spirit would somehow affects the administrator at this time of year. When I returned home to check the reply in my inbox, I steeled myself for disappointment. I held my breath, opened the e-mail, and started to read. And re-read, just to make sure I’d understood. Approval? I couldn’t believe my luck!
Immediately, I called the airline. Unexpectedly, even during the busy Christmas season, I was able to change my ticket to arrive the day before my sister’s graduation. With news this fantastic, I was bursting to tell my sister. But, fingers on the dial((拨号盘), I paused. Wouldn’t it be much more fantastic if I could surprise her? What a state of shock she would be in! Slowly a great idea came to my mind. I decided a much more dramatic arrival than just a ring of the doorbell. What if I couldn’t arrive in a box?
I started to plot.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn't get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!”

This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cell phone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It's really amazing. ”
“Well,” Jane shrugged (耸) her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I'll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!”
“Sounds more like punishment than a vacation,” she didn't look up from her soup and mumbled (嘟囔), “I cannot walk that far. ”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK, I'll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I'm ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path. “I'm still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

One of the tires on my car had a nail in it. Of all times for this to happen — a flat tire. But when is a good time for a flat tire? Not when you are wearing a suit and you have been traveling for nearly five hours on a country road and, adding to this unpleasant picture, dusk is approaching. What’s worse, my cellphone didn’t have a signal there. No kidding!
I sat for a few minutes complaining, but I had no choice but to begin emptying my trunk so that I could get at the spare tire and tools needed to get the job done. I carry a large plastic container filled with what I call “just-in-case stuff.”
Darkness began to settle in. It was becoming a bit difficult to see. The tire was on the passenger side, thank God, away from all the traffic, but it also made it difficult to benefit from the headlights of passing cars.
Suddenly, a car pulled off the road behind me. In the blinding light I saw a male figure approaching me. “Hey, do you need any help?” “Well, it certainly isn’t easy doing this with a white shirt and suit on,” I said. Then he stepped into the light. I literally was frightened.
This young guy was dressed in black, with both his arms covered in tattoos. His hair was poorly cut. He had leather bracelets with spikes on each wrist. “How about I give you a hand?” he said. “Well, I don’t know... I think I can...” I said nervously. “Come on, it will only take me a few minutes.” He took right over. While watching him I happened to look back at his car and noticed for the first time someone sitting in the passenger seat. That concerned me.
I suddenly felt nervous. Thoughts of carjackings and robberies flashed through my mind. I really just wanted to get this over and survive it.

As a nurse at the cancer care center where I’ve worked for seven years, I’ll do almost anything to make a patient feel better. But when I met Patty at the center, in 2011, she didn’t want my help.
She was a tiny 44-year-old single mom battling an aggressive head and neck cancer. Unlike many of our other patients, Patty was alone during her treatment, but no matter what I did. I couldn't get her to open up. She just buried herself in book or pulled a blanket over her head to fend off conversation.
Eventually I hit on a reliable way to make Patty smile: mentioning her nine-year-old son, Stephen. She'd tell me how well he did in school, how he'd been selected to read a poem he wrote at a local bookstore. She desperately wanted to live for him. With three kids myself, I totally understood how she felt.
After a year and a half of treatment, in August 2012, Patty was told her cancer had spread, and I learned she wouldn't live much longer. My first thought was, “What's going to happen to Stephen?”
Nurses at the center shared stories at their meetings about how bright and unusual the boy was. but no one seemed to know how to resolve the issue of what would happen to him when his mom died. My husband, Michael, who too works at the center, started hearing about Patty and Stephen.
One morning in October, Patty quietly slipped away. Michael and I picked Stephen up after school, drove him to a nearby park, and sat on a bench by a pond. I finally managed to say, “Stephen, we're sorry to have to tell you this, but your mom came to an end this morning.” The sound that came out of his mouth was like nothing I'd ever heard before. This skinny little guy sat between the two of us and just wailed (哀号) and wailed. It was as if his whole world was just destroyed.

In my double profession as an educator and health care provider, I have worked with a great many children infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about Tyler, who was a lovely and optimistic kid.
Tyler was born infected with HIV; his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medication to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medications were fastened to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing. Once in a while he and his mother made an appointment with doctors in the hospital. This cure was a big challenge for so young a body, but Tyler never showed that he was in great pain.
Tyler wasn't willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to bind hím playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicine-laden backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon. All of us who knew Tyler was surprised at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him. It was hard to look on him as a patient. Tyler's mother often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she caught a glimpse of him through the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly and easily spot him.

The first time I ever wandered into my college library was when I was in Fresher’s Week. That afternoon, I didn’t have a tight schedule and I decided to go walking around the campus. I went to different places until I saw a door with a sign “library” on it. I pushed the door open, and what welcomed me were rows of tall shelves, with lots of books on them. It was as if each book on the shelves had its own unique smell and each book was trying to tell its story. I walked up to the first shelf and picked up the first book that caught my attention.
Luckily, a book exhibition was taking place there. The author of one of my favourite books was giving a lecture. Her book inspired me a lot, so I was very happy to see her. While I recorded her lecture with my phone, I had so many questions coming into my mind to ask her.
After that, I came across a new friend at the exhibition. We discussed what we thought about the exhibition and we had a lot in common to share. He talked about how novels expand one’s horizons, and how they draw people into another world. “A good writer makes a reader who has never been to Europe or any other continent experience that continent without stepping foot onto it.” What he said really impressed me.
At the very moment, one of his friends was looking for him. I wanted to add him as my friend, only to find my phone had run out of power. So we had to swap phone numbers. After saying goodbye, I remained in the library, picking up a novel to read.

Let him learn the hard way
Paul was with me in the kitchen helping me out with the dishes. From his facial expression and his unmistakable body language I knew he wanted to ask something. Paul is doing his second year in a famous high school. I have always been afraid of spoiling him with my love as he is my only child.
We are well placed in life. Both of us – my husband and I-are human resource executive (主管). As I was about to switch off the kitchen light. Paul came near me with pleading eyes. “Mom. Our school is organizing a trip to the Yellow Stone National Park this time. They are charging only 200 per student, which covers all expenses--train tickets, food and stay. Mom, please, please let me go. I have more than a month’s time to pay the money. And we are going only in our holidays.”
I did not know what to say. My motherly nature was to say an immediate yes to see a smile on my son’s face, But I should not spoil this nice kid. So, I said to him, “Paul, I need to talk to Dad. Can I tell you tomorrow morning?”
“Thanks. Mom.”
After talking with my husband, we agreed to let him go but make him earn the money.
“Paul, Dad and I thought about your trip. Yes, in principle it’s okay for us. But you have to earn it. You said that you have more than a month to pay the money.”
“Thanks a lot, Mom. I shall surely save the money well before the due date.”
“And Paul, I would like to know the progress you make every day. So, let me know how much you have got on a day-to-day basis. You shall write that on this board, Okay?”
“Okay. Mom. Thanks once again.”

“There’s our guide,” I said to the bus driver. He stopped and opened the door to let me off. “You must be Becky.” she said.”My name is Anne.”
As the tour director for a group of forty-three. I quickly confirmed with Anne the sites we would like to see during the next four hours: the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House. Most importantly, we discussed when and where to let everyone have a break. It was not a simple matter for so many people. Then we climbed aboard to begin our tour of Washington D.C..
After introducing Anne to the busload of waiting tourists, I handed the microphone to her and made my way toward the last seat. The conversation with a guide usually ended there since she stayed busy engaging guests. My job was to ensure nobody got lost. But on that day, we managed a brief chat in the shade of a tree by the lawn.
“Where are you from?” Anne asked.” Alabama. Are you from Washington.D.C.?” “Well, I live here now, but I was born in Ohio,”she said.“ I was born in Ohio, too.” “Where did you grow up?” she asked in surprise. “ Middletown,” I answered. “Me too!”“Why did you leave home and come here?” I asked. “My father is an orthopedic(骨科的)doctor and he came here for further study……” “An orthopedic doctor? Sorry to interrupt you, but what’s your father’s name?”I felt like I couldn’t breathe at the moment. “Edward Cooper,” she answered. “ Mr.Cooper! My doctor’s name was Edward Cooper,”I said. “That’s really my dad!”Anne exclaimed.
My parents had told me a story. I was born without the left arm, and my left leg turned inward. Then an orthopedic doctor placed a cast from my hip to my tiny toes magically. Thankfully, my leg straightened out and grew strong. By ten months, I could take my first steps.
Paragraph 1:
At the time of the joy, however, my parents dreaded the final bill for the months of orthopedic care.

Paragraph2:
The doctor who showed such great kindness to my family was Anne’s father.

参考答案
1. Some time after I left the boat, I saw my brother struggling in the sea. I tried my best to approach to him but I failed again and again. I waved and called him to tie himself to another barrel to help him float. I struggled to run away from the whirlpool and prayed the storm could stop as soon as possible.
Soon after that, the whirlpool became less wild and then the sky was clear. The wind became calmer, and the moon was shining. I was still tied to the barrel and the waves soon carried me to an area where the other fishermen were. Fortunately, a boat picked me up when I was tired out. The fishermen were very old friends, but they were unable to recognize me at first because I was in a so difficult position. To my great excitement, minutes later, another boat arrived with my brother in it. How lucky we were!

When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather’s house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. They found a straight tree and set to work. They cut the tree down, and with a knife they took the bark off. It was a wonderful tree, which was smooth and was just of the right size. They thought grandpa would love it.
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. When grandpa took the cane, his hands shook with joy, thinking, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack said, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods.” Grandpa smiled and decided to give it a try so as not to make his grandchildren disappointed. He held the cane in his right hand and the arm of his chair in his left hand. He stood up with strength on his legs. Everyone was surprised and excited to see grandpa stand up. She followed me, her mind wandering. Minutes later, we started to climb a steep slope. Jane sighed, dragging her legs behind me. I was surprised to find some rarely-seen trees and flowers, and took many photos but Jane showed no interest. She stopped and sat on a rock, thirsty, sweaty and bored. I handed her a bottle of water and we took a break. “I missed my phone,” she complained as we continued climbing. Though unhappy, she just climbed along with me.
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How awesome !” She looked around dreamily, her eyes twinkling with indescribably wild excitement. A refreshing breeze brushed the mountain top, miles of trees spread out below us and birds chirped between branches. We sat on a large rock and ate sandwiches, enjoying the sounds, the smells and the sunlight. “Anyone still wants her phone?” I joked. She rolled her eyes, laughing out loud. The next morning, Jane danced to my room, crying, “Let's hike around the lake today.” Sure, get our backpack then, I beamed, relieved and joyful.

Suddenly, a small, soft voice came from the front seat of the car. “Are you all right?” she said as she turned around. “Yes, I am,” I replied with much relief seeing the old woman there.
Paragraph 2:
“My grandson insisted on stopping to help you when he saw you struggling with the tire,” the old woman said. “I am grateful for his help,” I said. “He is a great kid. He’s always eager to help people in need,” she said with a laugh. I felt ashamed of myself that I had judged him by the way he was dressed. Later, when the rain stopped, we changed the tire. I tried to offer him money, but he refused it. Then I thought that what people wear on the outside actually can’t decide what they wear on the inside. It’s one’s spirit that matters most.

Despite my concern and anxiety, pal seemed to enjoy the process. Thus, what I did in the following days was just witness him record the amount and give him a high five. Two days before the due date when he arrived home after school, he cried with excitement, “Mom, I made it!” seeing the bright smile in Paul’s face and the shaking fist in triumph, I hugged him tightly with grateful tears in my eyes.
