    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A BC D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

    A

In a lot of other states in America, warm sunny days mean lazy afternoons are spent on the beach. In Oregon, people pack hiking shoes with their bathing suits. Here are 3 incredible hikes for you.

    Cascade Head Preserve

    Distance: 6.8 miles

    Difficulty: Moderate

    Nearest Town: Lincoln City

Managed by the international nonprofit The Nature Conservancy, the Cascade Head Preserve is an excellent hike that typically marks the division between the north and central Oregon coast. There are upper and lower trailheads (小道的起点), with about 3.4 miles of trails between the two.

    Cape Lookout

    Distance: 5 miles

    Difficulty: Easy

    Nearest Town: Tillamook

Of all the capes on the Oregon coast, Cape Lookout might be the most famous, projecting 1.5 miles into the ocean. Visitors can tackle the five-mile, round-trip hike to the tip of the cape where they can enjoy several incredible views over the Pacific Ocean. Separate trails lead down to South Beach and the Campground.

    Clatsop Loop Hike

    Distance: 3 miles

    Difficulty: Easy

    Nearest Town: Cannon Beach

There are several trails that traverse (横越) Tillamook Head at Ecola State Park, but the Clatsop Loop Hike is known for its breathtaking Cliffside views and quiet forested paths. Take the seaside trail from Indian Beach to the Hikers Camp, then take the forested path back.

1Which is the dividing line between the north and central Oregon coast?

    ATillamook. BCascade Head Preserve.

    CCape Lookout. DCannon Beach.

2What can you do while standing on the tip of the cape?

AGo camping in the wild. BGo hiking through the forests.

CKill time on the beach. DEnjoy views over the ocean.

3What is the Clatsop Loop Hike famous for?

AThe vast forest. BThe easy hikes.

CThe amazing views. DThe quiet seaside.

Human is struggling to contain two major crises: Skyrocketing global temperatures and deep-diving biodiversity (生物多样性). But people tend to solve each problem on its own, for instance by using green energies and carbon-eating machines, while surrounding ecosystems to preserve them. But a new report argues that treating each crisis in isolation (孤立地) means missing out on solutions that resolve both. Human can't solve one without also solving the other.

So what might these solutions look like? Say, for instance, you turn a heavily logged forest into a national park. As the trees grow back, they would provide habitat for the return of animals. Letting a forest come back naturally, rather than planting a single species of tree to balance up some corporation's carbon emissions (排放), makes it recover faster. This is known as a nature-based solution, a campaign that both absorb carbon and provides an extra ecological or economic benefit.

Stopping human's attacks on ecosystems can also help fight climate change, the study's authors write. Even cities can get in on the action, the report notes. Urban areas turn into "heat islands" because they absorb the sun's energy during the day and slowly release it at night. They are therefore much hotter than surrounding rural areas. Planting more trees cools cities and provides habitats for birds and shade for humans, which will be even more critical as global temperatures rise.

The big threat, the authors stress, is that nature-based solutions alone can't stop climate change. As temperatures climb and droughts get more severe, it'll be harder for forests, wetlands, and mangroves to survive, even with our help. First and foremost, human has to dramatically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. “Nature is not going to save us." the authors say. “We can only use nature to support efforts.”

“Still, governments and corporations are becoming more conscious of the importance of maintaining biodiversity while also fighting climate change," says Beymer-Farris, from the University of Kentucky. “I myself, as a professor who has been working in this for 20 years, I see a lot of hope, because I see a lot of change on the horizon."

4How should people deal with the two crises?

    ABy using carbon-eating machines.

BBy giving priority to one of them.

CBy tackling them in the meanwhile.

    DBy establishing more nature reserves.

5What is the most effective way to stop climate change according to the author?

APlant more trees in urban areas.

    BAdopt nature- based solutions.

    CSend out less greenhouse gas.

    DProvide habitats for animals.

6What is Beymer- Farris's attitude to the future of the ecology?

    AOptimistic. BDoubtful. CCritical. DConcerned.

7Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

AWhy we care about climate change

BHow to live in harmony with nature

CWhy urban areas become “heat islands"

DHow to protect species and save the planet

    C

It is quite clear to me, based on my research, that tropical (热带的) insects rather than polar bears could be among the first species to become extinct as a result of global warming.

Insects in the tropics are already living at the limit of their temperature range and any further increases could quickly kill them off. This would be a major disaster for tropical habitats, which rely on insects for everything from pollination (授粉) to waste disposal (处理). We have found that a rise in average temperatures in the tropics of just 1 or 2 could be enough to bring about a significant and harmful effect on the survival of a wide variety of important insects. Fitness levels most likely decline quickly and there may not be much we can do about it.

Many tropical species can only accept a narrow range of temperatures because the climate they experience is pretty steady throughout the year. Now our study shows that they will be harmed by rising temperatures more than species in cold climates. Unfortunately, the tropics also hold the large majority of species on the planet.

We used daily and monthly global temperatures from the 50-year period between 1950 and 2000 and compared them against data showing the “fitness levels” of different species. “Fitness” was determined by indicators such as population growth rates and physical performance for different creatures.

We found that even moving into the shade did not help the insects. The direct effects of climate change on the organisms (生物体) we studied appear to depend a lot more on the organisms’ flexibility than on the amount of warming in the area where they lived.

As well as the danger for insects, the research confirms that there will be other consequences of global warming that could also have a serious impact on tropical regions, particularly on food crops. Our research focused only on the impact of changes in temperature, but warming also will change rainfall patterns. These changes could be more important for many tropical organisms, such as plants, but they are harder to predict.

8What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 2 refer to?

AGlobal warming. BLiving in the tropics.

CKilling polar bears off. DInsects becoming extinct.

9Why are tropical species more likely harmed by climate change?

AThe fitness of crops they feed on is declining.

BThey can hardly stand up to temperature changes.

CTheir living environment has been greatly damaged.

DThe amount of warming is not steady in the tropics.

10What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

    AThe significance of the research.

    BThe challenge facing the researchers.

CPredictions about the impacts of global warming.

DSuggestions on how to preserve tropical regions.

11What is the main purpose of this text?

ATo solve a problem. BTo give practical advice.

CTo report a coming event. DTo present a research result.

    D

Endangered polar bears are breeding (繁殖) with grizzly bears (灰熊), creating “pizzly” bears, which is being driven by climate change, scientists say.

As the world warms and Arctic sea ice thins, starving polar bears are being forced ever further south, where they meet grizzlies, whose ranges are expanding northwards. And with that growing contact between the two come increasing hybrids (杂交种).

With characteristics that could give the hybrids an advantage in warming northern habitats, some scientists guess that they could be here to stay. “Usually, hybrids aren't better suited to their environments than their parents, but these hybrids are able to search for a broader range of food sources, ” Larisa DeSantis, an associate professor of biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, told Live Science.

The rise of “pizzly” bears appears with polar bears' decline: their numbers are estimated to decrease by more than 30% in the next 30 years. This sudden fall is linked partly to “pizzly” bears taking up polar bears' ranges, where they outcompete them, but also to polar bears' highly specialized diets.

“Polar bears mainly consumed soft foods even during the Medieval Warm Period, a previous period of rapid warming,” DeSantis said, referring to fat meals such as seals. “Although all of these starving polar bears are trying to find alternative food sources, like seabird eggs, it could be a tipping point for their survival.” Actually, the calories they gain from these sources do not balance out those they burn from searching for them. This could result in a habitat ready for the hybrids to move in and take over, leading to a loss in biodiversity if polar bears are replaced.

“We're having massive impacts with climate change on species,” DeSantis said. “The polar bear is telling us how bad things are. In some sense, “pizzly” bears could be a sad but necessary compromise given current warming trends.”

12Why do polar bears move further south?

ATo create hybrids. BTo expand territory.

CTo relieve hunger. DTo contact grizzlies.

13What makes “pizzly” bears adapt to natural surroundings better than their parents?

    ABroader habitats. BMore food options.

    CClimate preference. DImproved breeding ability.

14What does the underlined phrase “a tipping point” in paragraph 5 refer to?

AA rare chance. BA critical stage.

CA positive factor. DA constant change.

15What's the main idea of the text?

APolar bears are changing diets for climate change.

BPolar bears have already adjusted to climate change.

C“Pizzly” bears are on the rise because of global warming.

D“Pizzly” bears have replaced polar bears for global warming.

    书面表达

    Dear editor,

Recently there has been a series of wide-ranging discussions about whether it is necessary for primary school students to learn English.

As a senior high school student who has gone through all the pains and efforts to learn this language, I firmly believe it’s time we took immediate action to free primary school students from the sufferings.

While English is a must in international trade, for most of its child learners across the country, whose number is counted in millions, English is not necessary in their future life. Nor is it an essential part in their future jobs. Most students learn English only to pass exams and that’s why they will soon forget every word after graduation. Why must we trap young kids into an odyssey of learning something unimportant and unnecessary?

A curriculum without English will certainly benefit parents financially, and of course, will be a blessing for young kids who desire less academic pressure and more time to play.
