Do you want to see majestic lions roaring, rare rhinos running and colorful birds flying? You’ll find this incredible display of nature in the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley.

    First stop

Fly into Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This great city is known for its fashion markets and beautiful art. And be sure to pick up some rich Kenyan coffee while you’re there! Then head for the countryside.

    Plan your trip

The largest of the three lakes in the system, Lake Nakuru, is less than 175 kilometers from Nairobi. But Lakes Bogoria and Elementaita are equally worth a visit. You can stay at one of several choices of luxurious cabins in the valley. And if you sign up for a trip, be sure to put flamingos, the white and pink birds, at the top of your list.

    Paradise

The Kenya Lake System is shallow and alkaline (碱性的). That means it supports vegetation such as green algae, a food source for many waterfowl. Hundreds of species of birds flourish here, using this area as a major breeding and nesting ground. Water buffalo, leopards, monkeys and the endangered Rothschild giraffe also make this area their home.

    Other sights

Wildlife isn’t the only natural wonder in the Great Rift Valley. The valley marks a place where the earth is divided far below the surface. This rock separation below ground leads to noticeable features above ground. Walking around Lake Bogoria especially, you will see steam rising from hot springs.

Other activities include golfing, horseback riding and hiking. The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, either. The river valley is far from city lights, so many visitors gaze at the stars shining above.

If you are ready for a wildlife experience, don’t hesitate!

    21. Where can you buy fashionable gifts in Kenya?

    A. Nairobi.      B. Lake Nakuru.      C. Lake Bogoria. D. Lake Elementaita.

    22. Which should be the first choice on your travelling list?

    A. Living in a cabin. B. Seeing flamingos.

    C. Visiting hot springs. D. Gazing at shining stars.

    23. What can we learn about the Kenya Lake System?

    A. It has countless lakes worth visiting. B. It’s an ideal place for wildlife to live.

    C. Its water is unsuitable for plant growth. D. It’s famous for rich culture and history.

    B

Many schools across the US hold graduation ceremonies this time of year. In some schools, even 5 and 6-year-olds observe their graduation from kindergarten. And so can older people, much older. Meet 70-year-old Jerry Reid, who just graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He earned a bachelor’s degree.

Mr. Reid might not look like the average college student; his hair is definitely grayer. But still Jerry Reid’s age is easy to forget, other UVA students know him as one of their own. Mr. Reid sat into the “Hoo Crew,” a group that cheers loudly for the school at sports events. He also joined a men’s group on campus. He sang drinking songs along with many other students. Mr. Reid’s school friends say they can talk to him just about anything.

About a half century ago, in his 20s, Mr. Reid was not in school. Instead, he was racing cars and chasing girls. But he says his friend Bill invited him to UVA parties. “Bill told me what a terrible life I had unless I came up here and went to school with him,” said Reid.

That was in 1963. Jerry Reid says it took him 48 years to take that advice. In 2011, he entered college. UVA Professor Luke Wright says Mr. Reid influences students. He opened the minds of the young adults. The teacher says Mr. Reid showed them that life does not end at 40. Instead, the 70-year-old college graduate believes that getting older can be the beginning of a dream.

“Remember that path that you left waits for you. It’s there. It’s yours. All you must do is to get out of your own way and get back to it. And, that’s exactly what I did,” said Reid. Mr. Reid says that he and his wife Susan now would take some time off to enjoy his college degree. Then, he’ll return to UVA to begin studying for his graduate degree.

    24. What do you know about Mr. Reid from the passage?

    A. He was laughed at by other students.

    B. He got his graduate degree at the age of 70.

    C. He was interested in racing cars in his youth.

    D. He transformed the views of young people completely.

    25. From what he did in the university, we can infer that Mr. Reid was _________.

    A. considerate    B. independent  C. intelligent    D. energetic

    26. What does the fourth paragraph mainly discuss?

    A. How Mr. Reid realizes his dream.     B. What teachers think of Mr. Reid.

    C. When Mr. Reid entered college.      D. Why the students like Mr. Reid.

    27. What lesson can we learn from the story of Jerry Reid?

    A. It is never too late to learn.   B. Two heads are better than one.

    C. Actions speak louder than words. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

    C

In mammals, loud calls usually serve as alarm signals that warn fellow species of an enemy or other danger. On the other hand, screams from humans can have very different meanings, as Swiss researchers now report in the journal “PLoS Biology”. Human’s screams are not always only associated with negative emotions such as fear, pain, anger and grief, but also positive emotions such as joy and pleasure.

Sascha Frühholz and his colleagues from the University of Zurich studied how many types of human screams there are, how accurately test subjects can distinguish them, and which brain regions are involved in processing such sound signals. To do this, they first made sound recordings of different screams. Twelve men and women were to put themselves in situations where they reacted with a brief scream. The predetermined situations included, for example: an attack by an armed stranger, celebration about a sporting victory of their favorite team, the threat of an opponent.

From the recordings, the researchers finally selected 420 screams. From this, they identified six distinct categories of screams, including three of alarming characters (cries of pain, anger, and fear) and three non-alarming screams (as expressions of great pleasure, extreme joy, and desperate sadness). Contrary to all expectations, the subjects reacted to non-alarming screams more quickly and recognized the emotion expressed with it more reliably than with alarming screams. This was also confirmed by images of the brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI).

Until now, researchers assumed that humans also detect and process perceived alarm signals particularly quickly in the form of screams, as this is an important survival mechanism, says Frühholz. But unlike monkeys and other mammals, non-alarming screams would have become more important for communication. “This changed priority is probably due to needs that have evolved in the evolution of complex human social relationships.”

    28. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. Human’s screams expressions.       B. An experiment launched in screams.

    C. Loud calls as a survival mechanism.   D. Mammals’ loud calls served as alarm signals.

    29. Which expression can be reacted to more quickly?

    A. Cries of pain. B. Anger.  C. Fear.  D. Desperate sadness.

    30. What does the last paragraph convey?

    A. Monkeys are not sensitive to non-alarming screams.

    B. Humans survive because of quick reaction to screams.

    C. Non-alarming screams gain priority because of human’s revolution.

    D. Non-alarming screams make human social relationships more complex.

    31. What is the purpose of the text?

    A. To spread and advocate.     B. To argue and discuss.

    C. To compare and inform.      D. To recommend and introduce.

    D

Children from four Buckinghamshire primary schools visited Epilepsy Society to plant a hedge树篱as part of a Plant-for-the-Planet project. The children from these schools were planting a hedge in the garden of the Queen Elizabeth House at the charity in Chalfont St Peter. Plant-for-the-Planet gives children across the globe the opportunity to learn about the threats of global warming to the environment, and then put their new knowledge into practice as they plant new trees.

The day was organised by Bob Sherren who showed the children how to plant the planet-friendly line of trees in protective chambers 防护室to shield them from hungry wildlife as they settle in their roots. Bob said, “The day really was Thinking Globally, Acting Locally put into action. The children learned about the importance of planting trees as a way of helping to bring about climate justice for many living in poorer nations and of course enjoyed planting the trees too. The eventual hedge, which will grow to full size over ten years behind the Queen Elizabeth House, is made up of trees such as oaks, silver birches and so on.

Bob added, The children were also able to help people living at Epilepsy Society because they will gain some well-needed privacy from the hedge in time. The natural wildlife benefits too from the fruits and nuts that a hedge made from native species can provide as well as the possibility for any number of nesting sites.”

Emma Darlington, Epilepsy Societys volunteer officer, said, “I think it's so important to encourage the younger generation that the future is in their hands and that they can make a difference, whether it is through taking part in projects like this or spreading awareness. We hope they learn a little bit about the work we do at Epilepsy Society too --- the trees they planted will be enjoyed by everyone here for years to come.

    32. What is the purpose of the Plant-for-the-Planet project?

    A. To help children learn more about society.

    B. To raise childrens awareness of global warming.

    C. To offer children colourful after-school activities.

    D. To teach children how to protect natural wildlife.

    33. What does the underlined word shield in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Separate. B. Take.    C. Get.   D. Protect.

    34. What can we learn from Emma Darlingtons words in the last paragraph?

    A. She hopes to popularize volunteering work.

    B. She tries to drive the children to study hard.

    C. She expects the children to take positive action.

    D. She believes the younger generation is promising.

    35. Which of the following best described childrens activities?

    A. Beneficial.    B. Effective.    C. Substantial.   D. Cooperative.

    第二节(5小题每小题2.5满分12.5)

    阅读下面短文从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项选项中有两项为多余选项

The lifestyle of a college learner or someone taking a graduate course gets even busier at higher academic level as compared to that of a high school student. What everyone assume is that college life is supposed to be fun with a rich social life. However, all the bustle and hustle (熙熙攘攘) often leaves less time.    36    How can you ensure that doesn't happen and involve a healthy lifestyle into your daily routine?

Due to the high expectation placed on students, many experience high levels of pressure.   37     Continuous heavy workload eventually leads to depression, anxiety, inability to concentrate, and an increase in risky behavior. In that case, nowadays, students can get help with their assignments from their tutors or advisers.

38    Although it’s an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, even students who make it a New Year wish often give up on the goal. A workout partner comes in to keep you accountable, offer companionship and give you the push you need to make physical activity part of your routine. It’s fun to work out with someone else with similar goals.    39

If you frequently over commit, you will eventually spend less time on things that really matter. After all, you are in school to learn, so attending classes, and completing assignments on time has to be your priority. The remaining few hours is for socializing or engaging in fun. If you find yourself saying yes to every invitation for fear of disappointing your friends, you will find yourself dealing with burnout.    40

    A. A healthy lifestyle concerns some other aspects.

    B. An unhealthy body increases the risk of diseases.

    C. So don't promise too much and plan your time widely.

    D. It also gives you a chance to socialize away from the school environment.

    E. Consequently, a healthy lifestyle takes a back seat, causing diseases and stress.

    F. Working out regularly can be a struggle for most students with a busy schedule.

    G. In fact, academic stress has become a lifestyle crisis affecting students at all academic levels.

I remember the hot summer when we discovered ice cream sandwiches at the corner store. They were ten cents a piece, a lot of money back then. I don’t remember how we came to buy one and taste it, but we were mad after that. Of course, none of us had any money. Whether we rode our bikes, or played ball, or sat and played cards, we talked and dreamed about those soft, creamy sandwiches.

My dad worked nights, coming home to join us for breakfast, and then sleeping till late afternoon. When he came home one morning, I heard the jingle (叮当声) of change in his pants and something ugly slowly came into my mind. All day long I kept coming into the house and listening at his door. When I heard his sleeping sounds, I cracked the door and there hanging at the foot of the bed were those pants. I slipped in and took a handful of change. It was enough for my friends and me to eat like greedy pigs. And I became a hero to my band of friends.

That went on every day for about two weeks. I had gotten good at slipping in and slipping out, and then ran to my friends and we headed to the store.

One day there was no change in dad’s pocket so I felt hesitated a moment, then took out two whole dollars. I had been okay with taking the change, but those dollars made my face hot. Even before we began enjoying sandwiches, my stomach felt sick. The importance and joy I had felt buying for my friends was gone. If dad knew what I had done, he’d kill me.

    注意:
