Once upon a time, there were no rivers or lakes on the earth, but only the Eastern Sea. There were four dragons living in it. They were the Long Dragon, the Yellow Dragon, the Black Dragon and the Pearl Dragon.

One day the four dragons were playing in the clouds. When they looked down, they saw a white－haired woman. She said, “Please send rain quickly, my God, to give us rice to eat.” There had been no rain for a long time. Crops(庄稼) all died and the grass turned yellow.

“How poor the people are! They will die unless it rains soon，” said the Yellow Dragon. The others all agreed, “Let's go and ask the Jade Emperor(玉皇大帝) for rain.”

But when they met the Jade Emperor, he refused to send rain. The four dragons decided to save the people by themselves. They flew to the sea and drank lots of water, and then flew back into the sky and sprayed(喷洒) the water out over the earth.

“It's raining! It's raining！” People in the area cheered.

But the Jade Emperor wanted to catch them, so the four dragons ran away and decided to turn themselves into four rivers. And they are China's four great rivers—the Heilongjiang(the Black Dragon) in the north, the Huanghe(the Yellow Dragon) in the center of China, the Changjiang(the Long Dragon) in the south, and the Zhujiang(the Pearl Dragon) in the very far south.
