When Jayce Crowder was in Kindergarten he noticed that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.
It started when one boy laughed at him. He was mad at looking so different from others. His mother Lewis anxiously didn’t know how to deal with it. A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth grader. The boy, then 14, had become an Internet-star after posting videos of his slam dunk. Like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one slam dunk after another.
At the time it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce — he’d see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. Luckily, a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to encourage Jayce and build his confidence.
A few days later, the boys met at Washington Middle School. Several months later they instantly bonded. Trashaun taught Jayce how to achieve slam dunks, even giving him a basketball as a gift. He encouraged Jayce not to let anyone drag him down and shake his confidence.
After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability. He practises shooting basketball every day and he really loves it. Jayce often chats with Trashaun on the Internet about basketball skills as well as some school issues. He is really motivated by this role model and has a positive attitude to his future life. As for Trashaun, he never dreamed that his videos would have such an effect. His relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids.
    1. Why was Jayce shocked when he saw the slam dunk of Trashaun Willis?
    A. Because Trashaun has a positive attitude.
    B. Because Transhoun looked the same as Jayce.
    C. Because Transhaun became an Internet star at such an early age.
    D. Because Trashaun was disabled with impressive basketball skills
    2. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. Jayce looked forward to helping more kids
    B. His mother left him alone when he was laughed at.
    C. Jayce started to accept his own disability with the help of Trashaun.
    D. A family friend set up a meeting with Transhaun to encourage Jayce.
    3. What does Jayce’s story mainly tell us?
    A. Practice makes perfect. B. Confidence counts a lot.
    C. Wisdom makes a great difference. D. A role model is of great importance
根据第二段中“A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth grader. The boy, then 14, had become an Internet-star after posting videos of his slam dunk. Like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one slam dunk after another.(几周后,Lewis打开电视,看了一则关于八年级学生Trashaun Willis的新闻。
根据倒数第二段中“Trashaun taught Jayce how to achieve slam dunks, even giving him a basketball as a gift. He encouraged Jayce not to let anyone drag him down and shake his confidence.( Trashaun教Jayce如何灌篮,甚至送给他一个篮球作为礼物。他鼓励Jayce不要让任何人拖垮他,动摇他的信心)”以及最后一段中“After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability.(会面之后,Jayce学会了接受自己的残疾)”可推知,Jayce在Trashaun的帮助下开始接受自己的残疾。
根据最后一段“After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability. He practises shooting basketball every day and he really loves it. Jayce often chats with Trashaun on the Internet about basketball skills as well as some school issues. He is really motivated by this role model and has a positive attitude to his future life. As for Trashaun, he never dreamed that his videos would have such an effect. His relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids.(会面之后,Jayce学会了接受自己的残疾。
    B
These days, it's not unusual to see middle-aged men collecting Star Wars action characters, office workers wearing Hello Kitty decorations, or famous people like David Beckham playing with Lego bricks. It's becoming more and more common to see adult taking an interest in toys, books and the activities that are traditionally designed for children. This phenomenon has led to a new word: kidult.
What lies behind the phenomenon? One is that adults miss their happy days of childhood, and this is especially true with today's fast-paced, stressful lifestyles. Another is that adults have more time and money to spend on themselves. Some adults could only window-shop for their dream toys when they were kids, but now they can afford that radio-controlled car or high-priced doll they have always wanted.
Society traditionally disapproves of adults who continue their childhood interests, viewing it as a sign of irresponsibility. Those who agree with this view sometimes believe that kidults are suffering from Peter Pan Syndrome, a state of mind where people do not want to grow up.
From the view of kidults, though, this phenomenon is seen as nothing but harmless fun. Kidults think that having youthful interests keeps them young, happy and creative, and their refusal to meet with society's acceptable tastes shows independent thinking. Besides, they argue that being a kidult is not just a personal choice. The real causes include expensive housing, increased educational requirements for work and poor work opportunities.
    4. According to the text, a kidult is________.
    A. an adult who hasn't grown up B. a kid who lives with an adult
    C. an adult who has a simple mind D. an adult who takes up childhood interests
    5. Which of the following best explains "disapproves of" underlined in paragraph 3?
    A. Refuses. B. Forgives. C. Encourages. D. Respects.
    6. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
    A. To introduce a rising phenomenon. B. To complain about strange people
    C. To encourage studies on kidult culture D. To present reasons for the kidult culture.
根据第一段中“It's becoming more and more common to see adult taking an interest in toys, books and the activities that are traditionally designed for children. This phenomenon has led to a new word: kidult.(成年人对玩具、书籍和传统上为儿童设计的活动感兴趣,这已经变得越来越普遍。
根据画线词后文“adults who continue their childhood interests, viewing it as a sign of irresponsibility”可知,社会传统上认为成年人有童年兴趣爱好是不负责任的表现,所以抵制成年人继续他们童年的兴趣爱好。 A. Refuses. Forgives.原谅;C. Encourages.鼓励;D. Respects. 故选A。
根据第一段“These days, it's not unusual to see middle-aged men collecting Star Wars action characters, office workers wearing Hello Kitty decorations, or famous people like David Beckham playing with Lego bricks. It's becoming more and more common to see adult taking an interest in toys, books and the activities that are traditionally designed for children. This phenomenon has led to a new word: kidult.(如今,中年男子收集《星球大战》的动作角色,办公室职员戴着Hello Kitty的装饰品,或者像大卫·贝克汉姆这样的名人玩乐高积木,这些都是司空见惯的事。 故选A。
    C
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020, public health and government officials have put social distancing rules in place and advised people to stay at home as much as possible. Many schools around the world started online learning.
Do teenagers have it easy being home all the time? Not necessarily. They can’t connect with teachers and friends in person and do outdoor activities. They are even concerned about the deadly disease. These have caused a rise in anxiety among young people.
In a study of about 1,500 teens last spring, 70% kids said that they were struggling with anxiety and 45% had felt more stressed than usual. Poncin, a professor of clinical child psychiatry (精神病学), said that it’s difficult to show exactly what is causing the increased stress. Some factors focus on our communities and families, while others are individual (个别的). “There are many stress factors that teens are worried about, like their parents losing jobs, family members getting sick, parents not being home, not talking with friends, and more,” Poncin said. “Teens need to learn how to be together and how to talk and be with people.”
Thinking about something over and over also builds stress. To help ease (缓解) their worries, teens can bike, walk the dog or even pick up a new hobby.
In my home state of North Carolina, Roy Goode, head of the local educational agency, is especially concerned about students who don’t have the resources they need to learn at home. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders,” he said. “We need to make sure they all have a chance to succeed so we can overcome any challenge that comes our way.”
    7. Why does the author list the numbers in paragraph 3?
    A. To tell the reasons leading to anxiety. B. To stress the importance of being together.
    C. To show teens’ increased mental problems. D. To stress the need for dealing with sadness.
    8. Which of the following best shows Poncin’s opinion?
    A. He believes chatting online helps. B. He thinks teens should learn at home.
    C. He thinks there are different reasons for teens’ stress. D. He believes government is responsible for Covid-19.
    9. According to the passage, what can teens do to free them from worries?
    A. Stay at home alone. B. Develop new hobbies.
    C. Play computer games. D. Have a walk with friends.
    10. Where is the text most likely from?
    A. A diary. B. A magazine. C. A guidebook. D. A novel.
C 8. C 9. B 10. B
根据第二段关键句“They can’t connect with teachers and friends in person and do outdoor activities. They are even concerned about the deadly disease. These have caused a rise in anxiety among young people.”(他们不能亲自与老师和朋友联系,也不能进行户外活动。 再根据第三段关键句“In a study of about 1,500 teens last spring, 70% kids said that they were struggling with anxiety and 45% had felt more stressed than usual.”(在去年春天对1500名青少年进行的一项研究中,70%的孩子说他们正在与焦虑作斗争,45%的孩子感到比平时更紧张。)
根据第三段关键句“Poncin, a professor of clinical child psychiatry (精神病学), said that it’s difficult to show exactly what is causing the increased stress. Some factors focus on our communities and families, while others are individual 和“‘There are many stress factors that teens are worried about, like their parents losing jobs, family members getting sick, parents not being home, not talking with friends, and more,’ Poncin said.”(Poncin说:“青少年担心的压力因素很多,比如父母失业、家人生病、父母不在家、不与朋友交谈等等。”)
根据倒数第二段关键句“To help ease (缓解) their worries, teens can bike, walk the dog or even pick up a new hobby.”(为了缓解他们的担忧,青少年可以骑自行车、遛狗,甚至培养新的爱好。)
通读全文,结合第三段关键句“In a study of about 1,500 teens last spring, 70% kids said that they were struggling with anxiety and 45% had felt more stressed than usual.”(在去年春天对1500名青少年进行的一项研究中,70%的孩子说他们正在与焦虑作斗争,45%的孩子感到比平时更紧张。)
If you've never organized your own yard sale before, don't worry. But just follow these tips, and you should be well on your way to a successful sale:
Plan ahead. Just decided you're going to have a yard sale? Great! ____11____ In addition to preparing and placing signs around the neighborhood, you also need to find out whether your city and neighborhood organization has rules about yard sales.
Get help. Ask a couple of friends neighbors or family members to help you out with set-up, running the "register," or clean-up—or better yet, to add their own things to the sale! ____12____
Advertise. ____13____ You can pay for an advertisement in the newspaper, but there are lots of ways to advertise for free. Yard-sale-specific Web sites and handmade signs around your area can all help spread the word.
Direct. Make it as easy as possible for people to find your house on the day of the sale. In addition to putting your address in all of your ads you might want to put up signs starting at the main road on the morning, so nobody gets turned around and gives up.
____14____ Make it look attractive so it actually sells! Wipe down wash, iron and hang clothing, and lay everything out nice and neat on clean tables and shelves.
Price everything! It will definitely take you more time, but put price tags on every item rather than just waiting for someone to ask, and avoid the "all blue tags are $1" system, which mostly just annoys people. ____15____ You'll sell more this way.
    A. Make it look good.
    B. Choose suitable goods.
    C. Tell your possible buyers you're having a sale.
    D. Now give yourself at least one month to get prepared.
    E. Multi-family or neighborhood-wide sales draw more buyers.
    F. It's much easier for the shopper if each item has a clearly stated price in plain sight.
    G. Hopefully, you'll sell absolutely everything to make the entire experience worthwhile.
D 12. E 13. C 14. A 15. F
Just decided you're going to have a yard sale? 以及后文“In addition to preparing and placing signs around the neighborhood, you also need to find out whether your city and neighborhood organization has rules about yard sales.(除了在社区周围准备和放置标识,你还需要了解你所在的城市和社区组织是否有关于庭院拍卖的规定)”可知,上文提到要进行庭院旧货出售,且本段的主旨是提前计划,可知本句是在说明要为庭院旧货出售提前进行准备。
Ask a couple of friends, neighbors or family members to help you out with set-up, running the "register," or clean-up—or better yet, to add their own things to the sale!(寻求帮助。
根据上文“Advertise.(打广告)”以及后文“You can pay for an advertisement in the newspaper, but there are lots of ways to advertise for free. Yard-sale-specific Web sites and handmade signs around your area can all help spread the word.(你可以在报纸上付费做广告,但也有很多免费做广告的方法。
根据后文“Make it look attractive so it actually sells! Wipe down wash, iron and hang clothing, and lay everything out nice and neat on clean tables and shelves.(让它看起来有吸引力,这样它就能真正卖出去!
It will definitely take you more time, but put price tags on every item rather than just waiting for someone to ask, and avoid the "all blue tags are $1" system, which mostly just annoys people.(给所有东西标价!
