Are you nearsighted (近视的)? Do you wear glasses? Many of you may say “yes”.
In fact, China’s young people have the highest rate (率) of nearsightedness in the world, according to a report from the World Health Organization. More than 70 percent of middle school students in China are nearsighted.
In August, a plan to solve this problem was made. It is about to cut down the rate of nearsightedness for middle school students to less than 60 percent by 2030. Schools across the country are taking action to meet this purpose.
Luoyang Experimental School in Henan started with its desks. It has designed(设计)desks with a board above the top of them. The board stops students from lowering their heads too close to their desks. More than 400 students have used them so far. More students will use them soon. Renmin University Chaoyang Branch School is now providing desks and chairs according to students’ heights(身高). Studies have shown that right desk height can cut down nearsightedness.
Spending more time outside is also a good way to solve the problem. Chengdu No. 7 High School makes sure that its students play outside for at least 80 minutes every day.“We have a PE class and a 20-minute break in the morning and afternoon to do exercise,”said Sun Zihan, 14.
Watching the screen for a long time can also hurt our eyes. Beijing 101 Middle School has a way to deal with this problem. In its classrooms, there are special boxes for keeping students’ mobile phones.“We have to hand in our phones every morning and get them back after school,”said Huang Jiameng.

For two long years I lived the life of a slave. I dreamt to be free day and night but it was never possible. My master liked to go fishing in a little boat and he always took me with him. A man called Moely and a young boy called Xury also went with us.
One day my master said to us “Some of my friends want to go fishing tomorrow. Get the boat ready.” So we put a lot of food and drink on the boat and the next morning we waited for my master and his friends. But when my master arrived, he was alone. “My friends don’t want to go fishing today” he said to me, “But you go with Moely and the boy and catch some fish for our supper tonight.” “Yes, master ” I answered quietly but inside I was excited, my chance came!
We took the boat out to sea. For a time we fished quietly and then I moved carefully behind Moely and knocked him into the water. “Swim!” I cried. My master liked to shoot sea birds so there were guns on the boat. Quickly I took one of these guns. “Go back to the shore, or I’ll shoot you through the head!” So Moely turned and swam back to the shore as quickly as he could. Xury looked at me with his mouth open because I had always been such a good and quiet servant. He did not know what kind of man I was! But Xury was happy to help me. “I’ll go over the world with you!” he cried.
Later, we managed to get more water and food to sail on. Several days had passed. Suddenly Xury saw a ship, we called and shouted, but the ship didn’t see us. Then I remembered the guns which made a lot of smoke. Luckily, the ship saw us and returned. The captain of the ship listened to my story, He was going to Brazil and agreed to help me. Some people love going to museums, while others really hate it and would rather stay at home, enjoying their favourite TV shows. So museums are being seen as outdated and boring by today’s young people. I have just returned to the UK after travelling around the USA. While I was there, I visited lots of museums.I must say, museums are educational, either to develop knowledge learned at school, or to improve knowledge of other cultures.
In Chicago, we visited the world-famous Art Institute of Chicago. It was full of paintings, drawings and sculptures by a large number of artists, such as Picasso, Monet, Matisse and Dali. There was a mixture of traditional and modern art.
When we were in Washington D.C., we visited a few of the Smithsonian museums. These are all free to visitors, which is great if you just want to see a few things, and not spend all day inside. The Air and Space Museum was particularly good:it had lots of planes on show, interesting information and also some interactive(互动) parts. We also went to the National U. S. Holocaust(纳粹大屠杀) Memorial Museum. Naturally, it was sad to read about the horrors which influenced so many people in World War II. However, it was also interesting to read the stories of those who survived the Holocaust, as well as those who helped others.
Last but not least, I also found the 9/11 Memorial and Museum to be of great interest. This museum is for those who lost their lives, as well as their families, when the Twin Towers in New York City were attacked by terrorists(恐怖分子) in 2001. It tells you how the terrorists planned the attack and what happened as a result of their actions. Surviving pieces of the towers are shown in the museum. It was a truly meaningful visit, which made me value my own life that little bit more.
I think museums play an important role in realizing historical importance for future people. Whatever your interests, there may be a museum for you. You can visit waxwork(蜡像) museums to see models of famous people (and get photos with the Queen!), science museums for an interactive visit and so much more! Best of all, if you’re ever in the UK, many of them are free!

D. The Air and Space Museum shows the twin towers were attacked by terrorists.
( )44. What can we infer(推断) from the passage?
A. Future people have the duty to protect museums.
B. Visiting 9/11 Memorial and Museum is educational.
C. Most museums around the world are free for students.
D. Taking photos is allowed in the Smithsonian museums.

Antarctica (南极洲) is the fifth largest on Earth. It is also the coldest, windiest, driest and highest. It is an ice-covered place where no large plants grow, and no land animals live there.Antarctica covers an area of more than 13.6 million square kilometres. It is nearly twice the size of Australia, or one-and-a-half times the size of the United States of America.
Antarctica does not belong to one country, and it has no government. People visit Antarctica – usually as tourists, or to do scientific research – but no one lives there all the time.
Antarctica was the last place to be discovered. It is not certain who first saw Antarctica, but sailors began to map Antarctica’s coast from their ships in the 1800s. The first proved landing was in the mid-1890s.
Over the next few years, several men tried but failed to reach the South Pole, which is the Earth’s southernmost point.
Finally, a team led by Norwegian Roald Amundsen reached the South Poe in 1911. By then, countries around the world were becoming more and more interested in the frozen place, and soon Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom had laid claim(声称)to parts of Antarctica.
As so many nations had made a claim to govern in Antarctica, it was clear that fighting might break out. Diplomats(外交官) from different countries wanted to stop a war from starting, so they began talking about a treaty for Antarctica. A treaty is a written agreement signed by two or more nations.
Several countries had already set up research stations in Antarctica where scientists could live and work. Most scientists worked during the summer months when it was not as cold as in winter. Scientists hoped a treaty would allow them to continue their work and to exchange information with scientists from other countries.
56. What’s the area of Antarctic?
57. Who first saw Antarctica?
58. How many nations had laid claim to parts of Antarctica?
59. Why did diplomats from different countries begin talking about a treaty for Antarctica?
60. Would you like to work in Antarctica in the future? Why? (请自拟一句话回答)
