The ships and life jackets were ready. Now I just had to wait for my little brother, Daniel. His lungs(肺) had only 40 percent of the breathing capacity(量)of a common teenager. Daniel was fourteen—only four years younger than me—but I made it my business to look after him. Friends who were coughing had to stay away until they were well. If not, it would mean a trip to the hospital if Daniel caught a cold. Many people said I protected him too much. I was like Daniel’s guardian angel(守护神), though he probably didn’t know it.
I climbed into my seat and waited. When he was breathing better, we rowed past the cliffs(峭壁). The sea was mad, but it was no trouble for us with rowing experience. We felt surprised at the beautiful scene.
Suddenly the blue sky became windy and dark. Our ships went up and down in the wave. I got too close to a rock on my left side. But before I could move away, a strong wave swept up my ship and pushed me toward the rock I was trying to avoid. I tried to keep my balance but failed! Suddenly, my ship was ripped(裂开)by the rock. I fell into the water. Everything was white. I looked around but my ship was nowhere to be seen. The waves were too strong. I could hardly move.
I could see my brother 30 yards away. He was just away from the dangerous white water and rocks, still in his ship. If he came closer, he would fall into the water, too. He wouldn't have the strength to fight. But Daniel was rowing as fast as he could. I caught the back of his ship. Breathing hard, Daniel pulled me toward the ship. He could hardly breathe but kept rowing.
Finally my feet touched the shore. It took Daniel a while to get his breath back. We both lay on the shore.
Looking at Daniel, I thought of something.
( ) 35. We can learn from the first paragraph that Daniel ________________.
A. had his lungs operated on B. will soon go to hospital

A. Because his falling down in the ship made the ship break.
B. Because his ship hit a rock as a result of a strong wave.
C. Because his ship knocked into the shore on his left side.
D. Because a strong wind made his ship turn over in water.
( ) 38. We can learn from the last paragraph that ________________.
A. a friend in need is a friend indeed
B. rich rowing experience is important
C. Daniel is also the writer’s guardian angel
D. the writer decided not to protect Daniel
(C)
Jane Eyre(简爱)tells the story of a good and independent woman, who does not depend on others and does not give up even facing many difficulties. Jane is poor and an orphan(孤儿)and is treated badly by her rich aunt and cousins. She is sent away to a school where the pupils are treated very badly. Jane remains strong, because she knows she is good. And when she had the chance to run away, she does. Jane takes a job in the house of a rich man called Mr Rochester.
Jane falls in love with Mr Rochester who is twenty years older than her. Jane is sad when Rochester brings a beautiful woman Blanche to his house. Jane thinks Rochester will marry Blanche. So she decides to leave. Rochester asks her to stay but she will not. She tells him she loves him and says that she is poor and not beautiful, but it does not mean that she has no feelings. She speaks to Rochester as a ‘spiritual equal’.
Rochester asks Jane to marry him and she agrees, but on the day of the wedding she finds out that Rochester is already married. Jane decides to leave and even though Rochester says his wife is mad and begs Jane to stay, she cannot. Jane will not stay with a man who is already married. She has no family to protect her and no money, but she is proud and she wants to do the right thing.
When Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte was first published, it was called an autobiography(自传). In Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte, like Charles Dickens, shows the double-standards in Victorian Britain. Have you ever had trouble trying to choose a gift? Perhaps you need a birthday present for someone who is hard to please. How about clothing? You might be worried about choosing the wrong size, color, or style. Books or DVDs? You may not know enough about the person’s likes, dislikes, and interests. And giving money may not seem right. Well, how about a gift card?
A gift card is a card that is issued (发行) by a certain store. It’s worth a certain amount money. It looks like a credit card (信用卡), but it actually works like cash. A gift-card holder can spend the amount of money noted on the card in the store that issued it. These cards are big money makers. One reason is that when gift-card holders go to the store, they often see other things to buy, and they end up spending more money than the gift card is worth.
Gift cards are becoming popular in many countries around the world. Why? Cards are easy to buy and easy to use, either in the store or online. The receiver can select his or her own gift, and the giver doesn’t have to worry about finding just the right thing.
Receiving a gift card, however, is not the same as receiving a gift. An actual gift can better remind us of the giver’s thought and effort that went into the choice. The message of a real gift is more likely to be, “I spent some time trying to find the right gift for you because I care about you.”
Often a gift card doesn’t pass on the same message as an actual gift. It may seem to say, “I was in a hurry. I didn’t have time to think about what you really like.” In today’s busy world, gift cards are certainly convenient. However, they can make us forget the real purpose of giving gifts, which is to build a closer bond relationship between the gift-giver and the gift-receiver.
( ) 43. The first paragraph is used to ____________.
A. introduce the main topic B. show the writer’s attitude
C. describe how to choose a gift D. explain how to use a gift card
( ) 44. What do we know about gift cards?
A. They are the same as credit cards. B. They help stores earn much money.
C. They bring more customers to stores. D. They are worth more money than they cost.
( ) 45. What is the advantage of giving an actual gift?
A. It is liked by the receivers. B. It reminds people of their interests.
C. It shows the giver’s thought and effort. D. It passes on more messages about the receivers.
( ) 46. The last paragraph mainly talks about ____________.
A. the real purpose of giving gifts
B. the disadvantage of gift cards.
C. the relationship between gift cards and actual gifts.
D. the relationship between the gift-giver and gift-receiver

How to Make the Time for Your Personal Goals
One of the biggest challenges in trying to achieve any personal goal is that we want to put them off until tomorrow, or next week, in order to finish more important things at work and home. Maybe the following can help you find the time for your personal goals.
1. Make one goal at a time
Often the problem is that you try to make too many goals at once. You have a list of things you want to finish and because of that you never start. It’s very difficult to pay attention to too many goals at once. So catching one goal at a time is enough.
2. Be sure you really want it
It’s not enough to say, “It would be nice to learn French” or “It would be cool to do yoga(瑜伽) every morning”. It has to be something you really want. Ask yourself why you want to achieve this goal, and how much you want it.
3. Show that you’re serious
Tell as many people as you can about your goal. Write down your goal carefully. If you can’t even write it down, you’re not serious. Then write out a plan, with dates and actions. Think about problems, and write down your ways to solve them. The plan shows you’re serious.
4. Make it your top task
You all have many things to do in your lives, from school or work to family. If you put all these first, you won’t ever find the time for your goal. Instead, if we make our goal our top task, we’ll make the time.
With these steps, your goals surely come true.
