The negative health impacts of plastic on both wildlife and humans have been well-documented.

Howeverplasticswhich are used for everything from grocery bags to food packagingare hard to avoid.

NowFrench start-up Carbios wants to solve the worlds plastic pollution problem with a mutant bacterial enzyme() that digests PET—the most abundant polyester plastic(聚酯塑料) used to produce packaging and plastic bottles—and turns it into its chemical building blocks. The resulting material can be used to create anything andmore importantlycan be endlessly recycled.

Mechanical recycling is limited explains Carbios CEO Martin. After 6 or 7 cycles of recyclingthe plastic might only be good enough to use for something like the plastic on the backing of a carpetand eventuallyit will have to be thrown away.So its not a solution for the end of life of plasticswhereas our solution is an unlimited recycling solution.

The companys search for the best plastic-eating bacteria began about a decade agowith 100,000 promising candidates. The list was soon reduced to one—a leaf compost bug.Once it had been identifiedCarbios scientists introduced mutations(突变)The new and improved enzyme was able to downgrade up to 90 percent of a ton of plastic in only 10 hours. To break down the plasticthe waste and the enzyme will be heated for 16 hours at 65.The resulting mix is then purified. This allows for the recovery of the chemical building blocks and removes any additives and colors that may be present.

This technique will certainly help reduce plastic pollution Martin said. But we can only win the battle if people do a better job of ensuring plastic waste ends up in a recycling bin.

What will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guessesof coursebut we can be sure that he will be different from what he is todayfor man is slowly changing all the time.

1   Maneven five hundred years agowas shorter than he is today.Nowon averagemen are about three inches taller.Five hundred years is a relatively short period of timeso we may assume that man will continue to grow taller.Againin the modern world we use our brains a great deal.Even sowe still make use of only about 20% of the brains capacity. As time goes onhoweverwe shall have to use our brains more and moreand eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change toothe headin particular the foreheadwill grow larger.

2   In factwe use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that mans eyes will grow stronger.

On the other handwe tend to make less use of our arms and legs.  3   At the same timehoweverour fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer.  4

Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at  5   All the samein spite of all these changesfuture man will still have a lot in common with us.He will still be a human beingwith thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

    AThis may well be true.

BLet us take an obvious example.

CNowadays our eyes are in constant use.

DTheseas a resultare likely to grow weaker.

ENow how exactly will this great revolution occur?

FIn the futurethenboth sexes are likely to be bald.

GWere all set to get much taller and thinnerif we want to survive.

On the other handwe tend to make less use of our arms and legs.

But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. disappear对应F选项中的 be bald。故选F

    5答案 A

Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at可知,人类将不再像以前那样好看。 故选A
