Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.
Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic(慢性的) diseases.
Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in middle-aged Australian men. He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men were between the ages of 45 and 65. The men reported about what diseases they had, or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.
The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30 minutes did not reduce the health risk if you spend the next eight hours sitting at the desk. Mr. Rosenkranz said it was important to make sure you exercise. But he said it was also important to find ways not to sit so much during the day.
Many jobs today require sitting and working at the desk all day. James Levine works at the Mayo Clinic in the United Sates. He suggests working while standing at high table some of the time instead of sitting at a desk. Dr. Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or eating. Or he advises walking with the people you work with for an on-foot meeting. And he notes that if you spend more time on your feet, you may have muscle activity that helps burn fats and sugars in your body.

Using a raised eyebrow or smile, people with speech or physical disabilities can now operate their Android-powered smartphones without using their hands, Google said on Thursday.
Two new tools put machine learning and front-facing cameras on smartphones to work, identifying face and eye movements. Users can look at their phone screens and select a task by smiling, raising eyebrows, opening their mouths, or looking to the left, right or up.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that 61 million adults in the United States live with disabilities, which has pushed Google, Apple and Microsoft to make products and services more accessible to them. “Every day, people use voice instructions, like ‘Hey Google’, or their hands to operate their phones,” the tech giant Google said in a blog post. “However, that’s not always possible for people with serious physical or speech disabilities.”
The changes are the result of two new features: one is called “Camera Switches”, which lets people use their faces instead of taps to interact with smartphones. The other is Project Activate, a new Android application which allows people to use those gestures to start an action, like having a phone play a recorded phrase, send a text, or make a call. The free Activate app is available in Australia, Britain, Canada and the United States at the Google Play Store.
Apple, Google and Microsoft have kept rolling out inventions that make Internet technology more accessible to people with disabilities or who find that age has made some tasks, such as reading, more difficult. Voice-instructed digital assistants built into speakers and smartphones can enable people with sight or movement challenges to tell computers what to do. There is software that identifies text on web pages or in images and then reads it aloud, as well as automatic generation of captions that display what is said in videos. Apple built “Assistive Touch” into the software powering its smartwatches. It lets touchscreen displays be controlled by sensing movements such as finger pinches or hand clenches.
    28. What is the main role of the two new tools?
    A. Taking sharper photographs with a phone.
    B. Using smartphones with face gestures.
    C. Curing people’s speech or physical disabilities.
    D. Increasing the fun of playing with smartphones.
    29. What do we know about the Project Activate app?
    A. It’s sold at a high price. B. It’s mainly used to send texts.
    C. It’s instructed by voice. D. It’s being used in a few countries.
    30. What does the underlined part “rolling out” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A. picking out. B. referring to. C. bringing out. D. reacting to.
    31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
    A. To promote Android-powered smartphones.
    B. To encourage more movements suitable for the disabled.
    C. To explain the problems disabled smartphone users have.
    D. To introduce some other inventions benefiting the disabled.
    D
Chinese traditional painting and dance are two vital parts of the art world. But what about when they meet each other?
This year, a dance drama titled Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting(《只此青绿》) was staged on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala and became a hit.
According to CCTV, this poetic dance program was inspired by the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains(《千里江山图》). Created by Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng at about 18, the painting is amazing in its huge size, rich coloration and the expressive details, reported CCTV. It shows a Chinese blue-green landscape: “mountains and groupings of infinite rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water”.
When the dancers moved elegantly, audiences seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers. “It brings me a pure experience of beauty. It is not only a drama but also an ‘exhibition’. Vast mountains and rivers are coming to life!” Internet user Mo Weisha wrote in a review. “More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.”
Some people even decided to watch the dance again when it was staged in the theaters later. In fact, in recent years, more and more modern shows pay attention to Chinese traditional culture and have received warm welcome. As for why, it is due to people's great love for traditional culture.
“The younger generations have grown up with a more open mindset. They hug Chinese culture and are proud of it.” Yao Wei, director of Henan TV Station’s Innovation Center, told China Daily.
    32. What is the function of paragraph I in the passage?
    A. To present a common phenomenon. B. To ask readers’ a question.
    C. To describe the art world. D. To introduce the topic.
    33. What can we learn about the painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains from the text?
    A. It was painted in several bright colors. B. It shows natural beauty vividly.
    C. It was created over a thousand years ago. D. It is of small size but includes great details.
    34. Why are shows about Chinese traditional culture becoming popular according to Yao Wei?
    A. People are more open to traditional culture.
    B. People are happy to see new forms of art.
    C. Chinese culture has been spreading around the world.
    D. People have gained more access to traditional culture.
    35. What could be the best title for the passage?
    A. Passion for Chinese Traditional Arts. B. Art Coming Alive Through Dance.
    C. Beauty Presented in Poetic Dance. D. Highlights in Traditional Chinese Culture.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
    A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly(倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs... How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn’t get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane(拐杖) out of a young tree!”

    参考范文:
    Dear headmaster,
I’m Li Hua, a student from Senior One. With so many parents coming to pick up their children, traffic jams are frequent near the school gate, causing much inconvenience to us and passers-by. I am writing to discuss the traffic problem near our school gate.
In order to avoid traffic congestion, I strongly recommend some effective measures be taken. First, encourage students to ride a bicycle or walk to school by themselves instead of taking a car, which will not only help reduce the jam, but benefit students’ health. Besides, it is also a good idea to allow Senior One students to leave school 10 minutes earlier than others, which will surely make the street less crowded.
I do hope there will be fewer traffic jams near our school gate.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
    参考范文:
Berlin thought it was a good idea. They set about making a cane for Grandpa immediately. The moment they chose a young tree of moderate size, they cut it down and then removed the branches and skins with a knife. With a small wood fastened on the top as a handle, a fashionable cane came into being. To make the handle feel comfortable, they wrapped a soft cloth around it. Berlin, full of innovative ideas, carved words Gift To Grandpa on the cane. What a cool cane!
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. Staring at the fancy cane, Grandpa was so happy with smiles on his face shining like a diamond. He thanked his grandsons for the wonderful gift with affection, “You brothers are really great creators!” Supporting himself with the cane, Grandpa couldn’t contain himself and went to the forest step by step. Watching the trees and grass around, he emotionally said he would forever cherish the fond moments they were together in the forest.

M: Great. Here is my student card. Oh, I’m sorry. I only have 3 dollars in cash now. Can I pay with my credit card?
    W: Of course.
    Text 4
W: Ernie, you can’t be serious. Are you really moving back to Germany? I thought you loved living here in South Africa. (4)
M: I do, Jane. But I won’t go back to my country. I will work in Italy for our new branch next month.
    Text 5
W: We need to know what you saw. Did the fire begin during the morning or the night?
M: I didn’t see any fire in the morning, but I did see smoke rising during the afternoon. (5) I thought it was just someone heating the house.
    Text 6
W: Did you watch the news on TV that the Chinese robot landed on the dark side of the moon? It’s named Chang’e-4.
M: Yes. I just read in the newspaper that the scientists found that it was driving on 40 feet of moon dust. (6)
W: Yes. I am so surprised about the discovery. (7) It is amazing that there could be so much moon dust there.
M: I am not surprised, but I am interested. (7) Beneath the levels of dust, there is probably so much information on chemicals that make up our universe.
W: I agree. I hope they can bring back some good samples.
    Text 7(第8题为总结题)
M: Construction of the bridge between our two countries was finally finished in November, 2019. I remember when the work started in December, 2016. Only 3 years! I bet this is going to be very good for business, Anna. We’ve reached $500 thousand in 2019, (9) but we could do so much more.
W: Definitely, Viktor. I bet our company can gain another $400 thousand in sales by 2021 from both the Chinese and the Russian sides.
M: I predict 2020 will be our best year ever!
W: Well, maybe the next year will be. The bridge isn’t scheduled to open until April. (10)
M: Let’s get ready for the increase. My goal is to have $1.5 million in sales by 2023.
    Text 8
W: How many people live in your house now, John?
M: My family was given this house from my grandparents after they died. My father, my mother, my sister and I live there now. My sister will be moving out to go to University of California next year, though. (11)
W: That’s a big family. Will you be going to university as well?
M: I hope so. Next year, I’ll begin applying to different schools. The school I want to go to is the University of Alabama, (12) but I know it will be cheaper if I choose a school here in Florida.
W: Those are both good choices. Do you know what you want to study?
M: I’m doing very well in math and biology. My father wants me to become a doctor, but I think I’ll be happier if I’m taking chemistry classes. (13)
    Text 9
W: That was a long phone call! What’s wrong with your sister?
M: She just lost her job. (15)
W: Oh, poor Stephanie! (15) That’s the third job she’s gone through in a year. Did this company combine with a bigger company, like the last one? Or did she make a mistake?
    M: Neither.
W: So, what is the reason now? (15)
    M: They’re replacing her job with a robot. (15)
W: Wow! In the financial field? I thought that kind of thing only happened at supermarkets.
M: It’s becoming more widespread. Even my job as a car repairman isn’t secure anymore. (16) Fortunately, I own my business so that I can support our kids. (14)
W: Yes, that’s a relief. I suppose my job is still going to be necessary many years from now.
M: I don’t know about that. Some teachers will still be needed, I’m sure. But online schools are starting to catch on. Maybe you should switch to something else, like business management. (17)
W: I’m too old for that. (17) Hopefully, I’ll be retired before that day comes.
    Text 10
In 1933, an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the filmmaker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney’s cartoon films for children. When Walt Disney heard Clarence’s voice, he said Clarence was the perfect duck. (18) The duck was the now famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film The Wise Little Hen. Donald Duck lived in an old houseboat and wore his sailor jacket and hat. (19) Later that year he became a star after an 8-minute Mickey Mouse film. The audience found him very funny because he would lose his temper very quickly and he became angry easily with Mickey’s 8 nephews. (19) Soon Donald Duck was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself. In the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s Donald Duck and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto appeared in hundreds of Disney cartoons. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared—there were no more new cartoons. (20) Clarence Nash passed away in February, 1985. But his voice is still heard by children today through cartoons on TV.
