If you travel in Athens, against popular belief, I would highly recommend saving the Acropolis for your second day. As attractive as it is to head straight to the most famous building in the city, there are several reasons why you should hold off until later. Sunrise is the best time to see the ruins, and who wants to spend their first day in a new city waking up at 6 a.m.? On top of that, the Acropolis is going to make every other site in Athens less important in comparison, so I recommend not hitting it on your first day.
We got to the southeast gate at 7:30, half an hour before it opened at 8. When the gate opened, we rushed to the hill. Our plan paid off because we had the whole complex to ourselves for five minutes. In this age of overtourism, getting to the greatness of the Acropolis with nobody else around felt special and excited.
The Acropolis is the name given to the complex on top of the hill, and it’s made up of several buildings. There’s the Temple of Athena Nike, the Parthenon, the Old Temple of Athena, the Legendary Olive Tree of the Pandroseion, the Porch of the Caryatids at the Erechtheion... and on your way down, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Something that sounds boring but isn’t is the Acropolis Museum, and I recommend spending a couple of hours there. As someone who is a museum-avoider, I listened to the recommendations of everyone who had been, and made myself go inside. And I loved it. The museum houses tons of sculptures unearthed from the Acropolis, and it was interesting to check them out.
Head to Syntagma Square next to watch the changing of the guard. This takes place every hour on the hour, so try to time your visit perfectly. The guards wear fun clothes and make for interesting photos.
    4. The author suggests visiting the Acropolis on the second day so that ___________.
    A. it can save visitors a lot of time
    B. it can save visitors from getting up early
    C. it can make for a better travel experience
    D. it can give visitors a better understanding of Athens
    5. How did the author feel when he ran to the top of the hill?
    A. Bored. B. Worried. C. Relaxed. D. Amazed.
    6. With what may the author agree about the Acropolis Museum?
    A. It is so great that it should be visited last. B. It is enjoyable and worth visiting.
    C. It wastes a lot of time. D. It should be avoided.
    7. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To provide some advice on visiting the Acropolis.
    B. To introduce the history of the Acropolis.
    C. To call on people to protect historic sites.
    D. To encourage people to travel around.

British anthropologists (人类学家) Russell Hill and Robert Barton of the University of Durham, after studying the results of one-on-one boxing, tae kwon do, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling matches at the Olympic Games, conclude that when two competitors are equally matched in fitness and skill, the athlete wearing red is more likely to win.
Hill and Barton report that when one competitor is much better than the other, colour has no effect on the result. However, when there is only a small difference between them, the effect of colour is enough tip the balance. The anthropologists say that the number of times red wins is not simply by chance, but that these results are statistically significant.
Joanna Setchell, a primate (灵长目动物) researcher at the University of Cambridge, has found similar results in nature. She studies the large African monkeys known as mandrills. Mandrills have bright red noses that stand out against their white faces. Setchell’s work shows that the powerful males — the ones who are more successful with females — have a brighter red nose than other males.
As well as the studies on primates by Setchell, another study shows the effect of red among birds. In an experiment, scientists put red plastic rings on the legs of male zebra finches and this increased the birds’ success with female zebra finches, Zebra finches already have bright red beaks (鸟喙), so this study suggests that, as with Olympic athletes, an extra flash of red is significant. In fact, researchers from the University of Glasgow say that the birds’ brightly coloured beaks are an indicator of health. Jonathan Blount, a biologist, and his colleagues think they have found proof that bright red or orange beaks attract females because they mean that the males are healthier. Nothing in nature is simple, however, because in species such as the blue footed booby, a completely different colour seems to give the male birds the same advantage with females.
Meanwhile, what about those athletes who win in their events while wearing red? Do their clothes give them an unintentional advantage? Robert Barton accepts that “that is the implication” of their findings. Is it time for sports authorities to consider new regulations on sports clothing?
    8. According to their research. Hill and Barton conclude that ________.
    A. the colour of clothing has an effect on most sport events
    B. red should be the choice of colour for clothing in sports
    C. red plays a role when competitors are equally capable
    D. athletes perform better when surrounded by bright red
    9. The underlined word “tip” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.
    A. achieve B. advance C. keep D. change
    10. The example of the blue footed booby proves that ________.
    A. male birds use different body parts to draw attention
    B. red is not the only colour to attract female birds
    C. blue gives female birds the same advantage
    D. blue can indicate how healthy a bird is
    11. What can be inferred from the passage?
    A. The colour red gives male animals the most advantage.
    B. Male zebra finches prefer to have red plastic rings on their legs.
    C. Rules on sports clothing are going to be changed.
    D. Athletes wearing red may have an advantage over their opponents.

Six Neanderthals who lived in what is now France were eaten by their fellow Neanderthals some 100,000 years ago, according to fearful evidence of the cannibalistic (食人的) event discovered by scientists in a cave in the 1990s. Now, researchers may have figured out why the Neanderthals, including two children, became victims of cannibalism: Global warming.
While previous studies have examined Neanderthal remains to find proof of cannibalistic behavior, this is the first study to offer clues as to what may have led Neanderthals to become cannibals. Scientists found that rapid changes in local ecosystems as the planet warmed may have wiped out the animal species that Neanderthals ate, forcing them to look elsewhere to fill their stomachs.
The researchers examined a layer of sediment (沉积物) in a cave known as Baume Moula-Guercy, in southeastern France. In that layer, charcoal (碳) and animal bones were so well-preserved that scientists could reconstruct an environmental picture representing 120,000 to 130,000 years ago. They discovered that the climate in the area was likely even warmer than it is today, and that the change from a cold, dry climate to a warmer one happened quickly. “Maybe within a few generations”, study co-author Emmanuel said. As the animals that once populated the landscape disappeared, some Neanderthals ate what they could find — their neighbors.
Cannibalism is by no means unique to Neanderthals, and has been practiced by humans and their relatives “from the early Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age and beyond,” the study authors reported. The behavior adopted by the starving Neanderthals in the Baume Moula-Guercy should therefore not be viewed as “a mark of bestiality (兽性) or sub-humanity”, but as an emergency adaptation to a period of severe environmental stress, according to the study.
    12. What does the study mainly focus on?
    A. The social behavior of Neanderthals.
    B. The reason for cannibalism among Neanderthals.
    C. The climate change in southeastern France.
    D. The influence of global warming on ancient animals.
    13. What can possibly be used to describe the climate in southeastern France 120,000 to 130,000 years ago?
    A. It was no warmer than it is today.
    B. It was first warm while later cold and dry.
    C. Its change was mild and went through quite a long process.
    D. Its change is a chief factor contributing to cannibalism.
    14. Which of the following might the study authors agree with?
    A. Neanderthals’ cannibalism showed their bestiality.
    B. Cannibalism was actually a measure the Neanderthals had to adopt to survive.
    C. Neanderthals’ cannibalism guaranteed their rule over other tribes.
    D. Only Neanderthals were found to have cannibalism in human history.
    15. Where can you most possibly find this passage?
    A. In a science journal. B. In a travel brochure.
    C. In a history book. D. In a geography book.

When Bryan Anderson noticed an old lady, caught on the side of the road, he knew she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out with his motor still running.
Even with a big smile on his face, she was worried. He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. After reading her mind, he introduced himself as Bryan Anderson and began to help her.
Learning that she had a flat tire, without a second thought, Bryan set out to work and took hours to get it right, dirty and tired. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid.
With everything done, the lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened. Bryan never thought about being paid. This was helping someone in need. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.
Bryan told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person help the way he gave her, and he added, “And think of me to let the chain of love pass on.”
Hearing that she owed him nothing, with tears rolling down her cheeks, the old lady drove off with a deep “Thank you”.
A few miles down the road, the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. In the dirty-looking restaurant, the whole scene was unfamiliar to her; a waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. Then she remembered Bryan.

    Paragraph 1:
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a $100 bill.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:

根据第一段中“Sunrise is the best time to see the ruins, and who wants to spend their first day in a new city waking up at 6 a.m.? On top of that, the Acropolis is going to make every other site in Athens less important in comparison, so I recommend not hitting it on your first day.(日出时分是参观废墟的最佳时间,谁愿意在新城市的第一天早上6点醒来?
根据第二段中“Our plan paid off because we had the whole complex to ourselves for five minutes. In this age of overtourism, getting to the greatness of the Acropolis with nobody else around felt special and excited.(我们的计划得到了回报,因为我们在五分钟内独享了整个建筑群。
根据第四段中“Something that sounds boring but isn’t is the Acropolis Museum, and I recommend spending a couple of hours there. As someone who is a museum-avoider, I listened to the recommendations of everyone who had been, and made myself go inside. And I loved it. The museum houses tons of sculptures unearthed from the Acropolis, and it was interesting to check them out.(卫城博物馆听起来很无聊,但其实不然。
根据第一段中“If you travel in Athens, against popular belief, I would highly recommend saving the Acropolis for your second day.(如果你去雅典旅行,我强烈建议你把卫城留到第二天去。)”以及第四段中“Something that sounds boring but isn’t is the Acropolis Museum, and I recommend spending a couple of hours there.(卫城博物馆听起来很无聊,但其实不然。 故选A。

根据文章第一段“when two competitors are equally matched in fitness and skill, the athlete wearing red is more likely to win(当两名运动员的身体素质和技术水平相等时,穿红衣服的运动员更有可能获胜)”可知,Hill和Barton通过研究得出结论:当竞争对手的能力相当时,红色对胜利起了作用。故选C。
根据划线词上文“when there is only a small difference between them(当它们之间只有很小的差别时)”以及划线词下文“The anthropologists say that the number of times red wins is not simply by chance, but that these results are statistically significant.(人类学家说,红队获胜的次数并不仅仅是偶然的,而且这些结果在统计学上是显著的。)”
根据文章第四段“In fact, researchers from the University of Glasgow say that the birds’ brightly coloured beaks are an indicator of health. Jonathan Blount, a biologist, and his colleagues think they have found proof that bright red or orange beaks attract females because they mean that the males are healthier(事实上,Glasgow大学的研究人员说,这些鸟鲜艳的喙是健康的标志。
通读全文,再根据文章第一段“when two competitors are equally matched in fitness and skill, the athlete wearing red is more likely to win(当两名运动员的身体素质和技术水平相等时,穿红衣服的运动员更有可能获胜)”以及文章最后一段“Meanwhile, what about those athletes who win in their events while wearing red? Do their clothes give them an unintentional advantage?(那么,那些穿着红色衣服在比赛中获胜的运动员呢?

通过文章第一段“researchers may have figured out why the Neanderthals, including two children, became victims of cannibalism(研究人员可能已经弄明白了为什么尼安德特人,包括两个孩子成为食人族的受害者)”以及第二段“this is the first study to offer clues as to what may have led Neanderthals to become cannibals.
根据文章第三段“They discovered that the climate in the area was likely even warmer than it is today, and that the change from a cold, dry climate to a warmer one happened quickly.(他们发现,该地区的气候可能比今天更温暖,而且从寒冷干燥的气候到温暖的气候变化很快就发生了。)”以及“As the animals that once populated the landscape disappeared, some Neanderthals ate what they could find(随着曾经居住在这片土地上的动物消失,一些尼安德特人吃他们能找到的东西)”可推知,12至13万年前的法国东南部的气候状况使该地区动物逐渐消失,从而导致了食人现象的发生。故选D。
通过文章第四段“The behavior adopted by the starving Neanderthals in the Baume Moula-Guercy should therefore not be viewed as “a mark of bestiality or sub-humanity”, but as an emergency adaptation to a period of severe environmental stress(因此,在Baume Moula-Guercy,饥饿的尼安德特人所采取的行为不应被视为“兽性或亚人类的标志”,这是一种对严重环境压力时期的紧急适应)”可推知,作者认为食人族的行为不过是一种适应环境的无奈的选择。故选B。
通读全文,再根据文章第一段“Now, researchers may have figured out why the Neanderthals, including two children, became victims of cannibalism: Global warming.(现在,研究人员可能已经弄明白了为什么尼安德特人,包括两个孩子成为食人族的受害者:因为全球变暖。)” 故选A。

either...or...“或者……
固定搭配be familiar to“为……
根据固定搭配arrange for sb. to do sth.“安排某人做某事”,可知此处用动词不定式,故填to meet。

    Paragraph 1:
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a $100 bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her $100 bill, but the old lady had driven off. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on a napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: You don’t owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: do not let this chain of love end with you. Under the napkin were four more $100 bills.
    Paragraph 2:
That night when she got home from work, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. She was wondering how the lady knew how much she and her husband were in need. With the baby to be born next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband Bryan Anderson was, but now everything is going to be all right.
