Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-km race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact(接触)with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says, According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里) per hour, which is about twice as many as they would burn walking although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1, 000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should Probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
    4. What advantage does race walking have over running?
    A. It’s more popular at the Olympics.
    B. Its less challenging physically.
    C. It’s more effective in body building.
    D. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
    5. How does the author describe the characteristics of race walking and running?
    A. By giving examples B. By making comparisons
    C. By giving definitions D. By giving famous quotes
    6. What does Dr. Norberg suggest about race walking?
    A. Walking behind an experienced racers. B. Having a medical checkup.
    C. Asking coaches for opinions. D. Doing regular exercises.
    7. What is the author’s attitude toward race walking?
    A. Objective B. Doubtful C. Tolerant. D. Unclear

And now, Words and Their Stories, from VOA Learning English. On this program we explore terms and expressions in the English language. And today we talk about a word that will help you talk about the best of times. That word is heyday. If you are in your heyday you are in your prime. You are at the peak of your abilities. You are having your best days ever!
Some people had their heydays when they were young, maybe in college or high school. They consider themselves past their prime. They might talk about those past experiences only and not plan for new experiences in the future. These people might be stuck in their glory days. Other things besides people can have a heyday. If you are at the pinnacle of success, you could say your career is having a heyday. Also, a place, like a city, can have a heyday and so can an industry.
For example, I grew up in the rust belt of West Virginia. In its heyday, my hometown was known for its steel industry. In fact, every man in my family worked in the steel mills. But when the industry shrank, the steel factory jobs disappeared. The city fell on hard times and today is still trying to recover.
However, many other parts of West Virginia are having a tourism heyday because of the beautiful natural environment.
So, where does the word heyday come from? Some word experts say that it first appeared in English in the 16th century as an interjection. An interjection is a word or cry (such as “ouch”) that expresses a sudden or strong feeling. So, “heyday” was used to express extreme happiness or wonder. Around the same time, “heyday” was also used as a noun meaning “high spirits.”
Meriam-Webster online dictionary says it was not until the 18th century that the word was used to mean “the period when one’s achievement or popularity has reached its zenith.” Usually, we use heyday in the singular form.
Saying the plural is a little less common. And that’s all the time we have for this Words and Their Stories. Until next time, I’m Anna Matteo.
    8. Which of the situations is proper to use the word “heyday”?
    A. A rich man B. A hard period
    C. A significant event D. A popular place
    9. What does “zenith” in the last paragraph probably mean?
    A. Peak. B. Quality. C. Quantity. D. Bottom.
    10. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
    A. How to learn English
    B. Words and their stories
    C. Heyday — The Best of Times
    D. An introduction of the idioms
    11. Where is the passage probably taken from?
    A. A TV show. B. A radio program.
    C. A language salon. D. A speech competition.

The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) have taken it a step further changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. “We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,” explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by, is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn tree into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off “switch” where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source — such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway — a lot of energy is lost during transmission. Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
    12. What does the study in the first paragraph mainly find?
    A. Different plants beautify the cities B. Green plants have benefits
    C. There is a big fall in crime rates. D. Employees like green plants.
    13. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer?
    A. To make the life of plants longer. B. To change composition of plants
    C. To test chemicals in plants. D. To detect plants’ lack of water
    14. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?
    A. They will speed up energy production. B. They may send electricity to the home.
    C. They might help reduce energy consumption. D. They could take the place of power plants.
    15. What may be the best title for the passage?
    A. Could glowing plants replace lamps? B. Can we grow more glowing plants?
    C. How do we live with glowing plants? D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free?

During lunchtime, Emma suggested going to the zoo to feed the animals and her mom agreed.
“We’ll stop by the bakery and pick some bread up. Now hurry and eat and then we'll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She'll be here any minute,” Mom said.
Emma ate her lunch and then ran into her room to get her shoes. The problem was that she could only find one of them. She looked under her bed, but all she could see were dirty towels and pants. She moved some of her toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find her shoe. After she’d checked everywhere in her room, she ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?” she asked.
Her mom thought about how many times she’d told Emma to clean her room up. She whispered something to Emma’s grandma and then said to Emma,“You will have to stay at home. Your dad and I will take Ryan to the zoo. Grandma will stay here with you.”
“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the zoo,” Emma cried. “I’m sorry, Emma. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you ignored me. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not doing as I asked. You will stay at home.”
Emma ran into her bedroom, crying. Her mom came to the door and said, “Emma, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told grandma not to give you any sweets until you finish the work.” She went out to the car with Ryan and Emma’s dad and then they drove away.
    Paragraph 1:
Emma sat on her bed and cried for a long time.
    Paragraph 2:
Emma and her grandma were sitting at the table, eating when her mom, dad, and Ryan came home.

根据第一段中“A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.(例如,在俄亥俄州扬斯敦进行的一项研究发现,城市绿化较好的地区犯罪率较低。
根据第二段中“These include plants that have sensors printed on their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater.(这就包括叶子上印有传感器来显示植物缺水的情况的植物,还有一种植物可以检测到地下水中的有害化学物质)”可知,麻省理工学院的工程师在植物叶子上打印的传感器的功能是检测植物缺水。故选D。
根据最后一段中“Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.(发光的植物可以缩短这段距离,从而帮助节约能源)”可知,发光植物的未来可能有助于减少能源消耗。故选C。
根据最后一段中“Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source — such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway — a lot of energy is lost during transmission. Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.(照明约占美国总耗电量的7%。 故选A。

1.根据上文“Some people may feel denial after a disappointment. It’s not very healthy to be in denial, because if you don’t accept the situation for what it is, you can’t take the next steps to move on.
2.根据本段内容“If someone else achieved what you wanted, don’t start taking your frustrations out on them. Face your failure with grace, and people will respect you even more for it.(如果别人实现了你想要的,不要把你的沮丧发泄在他们身上。
3.根据上文“Of course, it’s good to figure out what you did wrong this time so you can do better in the future, but there is a fine line between being active about your mistake and lying on it.(当然,弄清楚这次你做错了什么,这样你就可以以后做得更好,但是积极面对错误和逃避错误之间是有一条细微的界限的)”以及后文“or if you found that you just could not figure it out, drop it and move on.(或者,如果你发现你只是无法弄明白,放下它,继续前进)”可知,后文提到发现无法弄明白,可知本句与后文并列都是在假设发现出错的情况,故C选项“一旦你意识到哪里出了问题”符合语境,故选C。
4.根据后文“Reach out to friends and family, and keep in mind that you have loved ones who will stick by you through thick and thin.(向朋友和家人伸出援助之手,记住,你有爱你的人,他们会在任何情况下都支持你)”可知,本段的主旨是求助于身边的朋友和家人,G选项中support对应后文中stick by。
5.根据上文“Even though your disappointment has got you down, there are still plenty of possibilities ahead for you.(尽管你的失望让你沮丧,但前方仍然有很多的可能性)”以及后文“Who knows? What disappoints you may open up an opportunity that you had not previously considered.(谁知道呢?

故填from。
故填who/that。
故填is meant。
故填their。
故填to strengthen。
故填a。

Emma sat on her bed and cried for a long time. And then she wiped her eyes and started to clean her room. It took her two hours to clean up the room. “I did it!” she said proudly. She even found her missing shoe. She ran into the living room. “Grandma! Come and see. I cleaned my room and found my shoe.” Grandma looked at Emma’s room. “If you had kept it this way, you wouldn’t have lost your shoe. Come and have some sweets now,” she said.
    Paragraph 2:
Emma and her grandma were sitting at the table, eating when her mom, dad, and Ryan came home. “Well, look at Emma’s room! It’s clean,” her dad said. “How was the zoo? Did you have fun?
