Aeron McQuillin, 18, Bailey Campbell, 17, and Billy Tarbett, 15, were on their way to a supermarket in Fonthill, Ontario, when they spotted a woman on the side of the road with smoke coming out of her car. They quickly found the problem and determined the car was too dangerous to drive.
The driver couldn’t afford a tow truck (拖车). So, Billy suggested that they push the car. The woman lives more than five miles away. Dan Morrison, who also stopped to help, told CNN the driver's jaw dropped on hearing the teens' offer. Bailey told CNN they just wouldn't want to be stuck like that, so they insisted.
The three bought bottles of water and a speaker and started their journey. Morrison drove behind them with his hazard lights (警示灯) on for safety. Bailey said they faced several problems. The first was a big hill 300 yards from the start. Halfway through, they took a break and the battery died.
After more than two and a half hours of pushing, they finally delivered the car back home. Bailey described the motorist as both thankful and amazed. They exchanged hugs, and everyone went home for some much-needed rest. The teens never got the woman's full name.

Nowadays, air pollution is a global issue and particularly difficult to deal with in big cities with a large population. According to WHO, around 90% of people worldwide breathe polluted air, which is said to cause eight million deaths per year.
The Swedish furniture company IKEA hopes to reduce this number by producing the GUNRID curtain. It uses a technology that has been developed by IKEA suppliers in cooperation with several European and Asian universities over the course of the last few years. The process is activated by both outdoor and indoor light.
“For me, it’s important to work on products that solve actual problems and are closely connected with people. Textiles (纺织品) are used in homes and by enabling a curtain to clean the air, we are creating an affordable solution that does not take up too much space and also makes the home more beautiful,” says Mauricio Affonso, Product Developer at IKEA Range and Supply. “Our curtain will be available to the public in two years,” he adds.
For many years, IKEA has been trying to stop using harmful chemicals and reducing carbon footprints. Last year, IKEA started the Better Air Now campaign, aiming to turn rice straw — rice harvesting remains that are traditionally burned and contribute heavily to air pollution — into a new renewable material source for IKEA products. IKEA has also been committed to becoming positive to deal with climate change by 2030, reducing our overall climate footprint by 70% on average per product (compared to 2016).
In addition, the company has recently been acclaimed for its practical commitment that 70% of the materials used to make its products were either made from renewable or recycled materials.
“We know that there is no single solution to the problem of air pollution, but we will work for a long term for positive change, to enable people to live healthier lives,” says Lena Pripp-Kovac, Head of Sustainability at Inter IKEA Group.
8. What can we learn about the GUNRID curtain?

B. It works well in dark rooms.
C. It is able to make the air cleaner.
D. It was invented independently by IKEA.
9. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The Better Air Now campaign. B. The wide market for rice straw.
C. IKEA’s efforts to reduce air pollution. D. Tips to control one’s climate footprint.
10. Which can replace the underlined word “acclaimed” in para. 5?
A. Criticized. B. Evaluated. C. Warned. D. Praised.
11. What’s the author’s main purpose of writing the text?

The Maginot Line was one of the largest military structures (军事建筑) ever built, second only to the Great Wall of China. It was named after the man, French Minister of War André Maginot, who argued for its construction. André Maginot had fought with the French against the Germans in the First World War. Much of this conflict took place along the Western Front, which was a line of trenches (堑壕) across which the two sides faced one another. Both sides dug in deep and each lost many men over little ground.
Maginot never forgot these bad conditions. Thus he wanted to build a line of defences that would give the French an advantage in a similar conflict. He was concerned that the Germans would attack France again. Germany's population nearly doubled France's. The line of defences that Maginot pictured would allow a smaller French army to hold off a larger German force. In1929, Maginot persuaded the French Parliament to agree with his idea.
Though calling it a line makes it seem thin, the Maginot Line was in fact quite deep. It was fifteen miles wide at some points. There were outposts (前哨) guarded by troops, antitank rails planted in the ground, storage rooms armed with machine guns, and large and small fortresses (碉堡) along the line. Each had halls, lots of supplies, and air conditioning. The Maginot Line would give the French a supreme advantage in the case of a head-on (正面的) attack by the Germans.
Unfortunately for the French, the Germans did not attack head-on. They arranged for a small army in front of the line to attract the French. While the French were waiting, the Germans sent a larger force through Belgium, which is France's northeastern neighbor. The French did have some defences along their border with Belgium, but this part of the Maginot Line had not been strengthened. The Germans quickly attacked these defences. Within five days of their initial attack, they were well into France. Once they were in France, the Germans attempted to capture the main fortresses along the Maginot Line. Soon, Paris was taken and the Maginot Line turned into a failed project.
12. What did André Maginot learn from World War I?
A. The importance of setting up a defense line.
B. The ways of getting France out of conflicts.
C. The secrets of defeating Germany totally.
D. The urgency of strengthening armed forces.
13. What are described in detail in the third paragraph?
A. The French troops. B. The guns and fortresses.
C. The features of the line. D. The military supplies.
14. What was the problem with the Maginot Line?
A. It was of poor quality. B. Part of it looked strange.
C. It was too long. D. Part of it was weak.
15. How did the Germans break the Maginot Line?
A. They bought off some of the French officers.
B. They attacked the French army from another side.
C. They fought with the French army head-on.
D. They convinced the French army to give up.
