Like many teenagers, I was once troubled by anxiety and dissatisfaction-feelings that my parents often met with puzzlement rather than sympathy. They were already in their 50s, and having grown up in postwar Britain, they struggled to understand the sources of my discontentment.
“The problem with your generation is that you always desire to be happy.” my mother once said. I was puzzled. Surely happiness was the purpose of living, and we should spare no efforts to achieve it at every opportunity. I simply wasn’t prepared to accept my unhappiness as something that was beyond my control.
But I have noticed a shift in thinking, and I am now coming to the conclusion that my mother’s judgement was spot on. Over the past 10 years, numerous studies have shown that our obsession(痴迷) with happiness and high personal confidence may be making us less content with our lives, and less effective at reaching our actual goals. Indeed, we may often be happy when we stop focusing on happiness altogether.
While greater contentment is achievable, don’t expect miracle, and accept that no matter how hard you try, feeling of frustration and unhappiness will appear from time to time. In reality, certain negative feelings can serve a useful purpose.
When we feel sad, it’s often because we have learned something painful but important, while stress can motivate you to make some changes to your life. The last thing you should do is to blame yourselves for occasionally feeling bad when plans don’t work out.
Eventually, you might adopt the old saying “Prepare for the worst, hope for the best and be unsurprised by everything in between.” As my mother tried to teach me all those years ago, ease the pressure off yourself. and you may find that contentment arrives when you’re least expecting it.
4. Which of the following best explain “spot on” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A. Confusing. B. Correct. C. Ridiculous. D. Controversial.
5. According to the passage, which of the following mainly leads to teenager’ unhappiness?
A. High expectations.
B. Low living-purposes.
C. Inadequate efforts.
D. Improper preparations.
6. Which of the following statements is the author most likely lo agree with?
A. Stress in your life will probably ruin your happiness and life.
B. Higher personal confidence makes us more satisfied with our life.
C. You needn’t be guilty of feeling awful since you may learn a lot from it.
D. If we try hard, feelings of frustration and unhappiness will disappear from our life.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Can we benefit from negative feelings?
B. Why it’s time to stop fighting for happiness?
C. How can we overcome our unhappiness?
D. Can we generation be happier than our parents?
B 5. A 6. C 7. B
根据第二段“‘The problem with your generation is that you always desire to be happy.’ my mother once said. I was puzzled.(“你们这一代人的问题在于,你们总是渴望快乐。”我母亲曾经说。我很困惑。)”可知,作者当时并不赞同母亲的话。而根据前文“But I have noticed a shift in thinking”可知,作者的观念发生了改变,也就是作者认同了母亲的看法,觉得母亲的话是正确的。所以spot on为“正确的”之意。故选B。
5. 推理判断题。根据第三段“Over the past 10 years, numerous studies have shown that our obsession(痴迷) with happiness and high personal confidence may be making us less content with our lives, and less effective at reaching our actual goals.(在过去的10年里,大量的研究表明,我们对幸福的痴迷和高度的个人自信可能会让我们对自己的生活不满意,也会降低我们实现实际目标的效率。)”以及第四段“While greater contentment is achievable, don’t expect miracle, and accept that no matter how hard you try, feeling of frustration and unhappiness will appear from time to time.(虽然更大的满足感是可以实现的,但不要期待奇迹,要接受无论你多么努力尝试,挫败感和不快感还是会时不时地出现。)” 故选A。
根据第五段“When we feel sad, it’s often because we have learned something painful but important, while stress can motivate you to make some changes to your life. The last thing you should do is to blame yourselves for occasionally feeling bad when plans don’t work out.(当我们感到悲伤时,通常是因为我们学到了一些痛苦但重要的东西,而压力可以激励你对你的生活做出一些改变。你最不应该做的事情就是当计划没有实现的时候,因为偶尔感觉不好而责备自己。)”可推断,作者认为我们无需内疚,因为我们从失败中学到了很多。故选C。
7. 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“As my mother tried to teach me all those years ago, ease the pressure off yourself. and you may find that contentment arrives when you’re least expecting it.(就像我母亲多年前教我的那样,减轻自己的压力。你可能会发现满足感会在你最意想不到的时候到来。)”及全文可知,作者分享了自己对母亲的观点“年轻一代的问题在于总是期待快乐”,由疑惑到赞同的转变过程。作者还指出,负面情绪是生活必不可少的一部分,我们需要做的是放松心态,或许能在期待最少的时候获得最想要的满足。所以“Why it’s time to stop fighting for happiness?(为什么是时候停止为幸福而奋斗了?)”

Some events have been added to the 2024 Olympics, with surfing, breakdancing and sport climbing among the recent additions. With them come a group of terms that are foreign to the French language. For some French-language purists, it’s too much to bear to rely on English to praise surfers on their “noseriding”-standing on the front of the board. They’ve decided they need a French solution.
The French government has created a team of language experts devoted to promoting the national language. They will meet periodically over the next couple of years to identify and define new sports terms. The French battle against the influence of other languages isn’t new. In 1994, the Toubon law was passed, forcing the use of French in all government publications, contracts and advertisements. Yet it contained several loopholes, which allow brands and companies to extensively use English. As a result, anglicisms are becoming more obvious.
Julie Neveux, linguistics professor at Sorbonne University in Paris, said anglicisms are “sometimes estimated at just under 5% of the present vocabulary, but they are disturbing because they show that we follow an economic and cultural model other than our own.” They are particularly present in sports competitions and events, during which athletes from around the world are used to communicating in English. “Sport was one of the first areas to be globalized,” said sports historian Michael Attali, “This phenomenon has strengthened English as the official language.” Despite their best efforts, no committee has successfully prevented English from infiltrating everyday language. By the time French officials agreed on a translation and its definition, the English version has already spread throughout the nation, “Similar committees have been put in place in the past, but nothing has changed so far,” said Attali.
“There are far fewer anglicisms in French than there are French words in English.” said Neveux, adding these exchanges should not be seen as a threat. “All living languages exist by borrowing from each other. Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.”
8. What will a team of language experts do?
A. Promote the spread of French in the world.
B. Decide upon some new sports terms.
C. Bring English and French together.
D. Make French much purer.
9. What’s the result of previous efforts to stop English from infiltrating French?
A. Unimportant. B. Successful.
C. Fruitless. D. Unmentioned.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. English is more popular than French.
B. All languages should be preserved.
C. The exchanges between two languages can be avoided.
D. Neveux is positive about the impurity of language.
11. Where can we probably read the passage?
A. In a newspaper. B. In a travel guide.
C. In a biography. D. In a fiction novel.
B 9. C 10. D 11. A

根据第二段中“They will meet periodically over the next couple of years to identify and define new sports terms.(他们将在未来几年定期开会,以确定和定义新的体育术语)”可知,一群语言专家会决定一些新的体育术语。故选B项。
根据倒数第二段中“Similar committees have been put in place in the past, but nothing has changed so far(过去也有类似的委员会,但到目前为止没有任何改变)”可知,以前阻止英语渗透到法语的努力结果是徒劳的。故选C项。
根据最后一段“‘There are far fewer anglicisms in French than there are French words in English.’ said Neveux, adding these exchanges should not be seen as a threat. ‘All living languages exist by borrowing from each other. Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.’(‘法语中的英语词汇远远少于英语中的法语单词。’
故选A项。

A new test for COVID-19 is coming to store shelves throughout the U.S. This is the first test for the disease that you can do at home. It does not need a prescription, or doctor’s approval, to use.
Currently, the U.S. is testing nearly 2 million people daily, and most health experts agree the country needs to be testing many more people than that. Most tests still require a nasal swab(鼻拭子) performed by a health professional, followed by processing at a laboratory. That typically means you have to wait days for the test results.
For months, health experts have stressed the need for fast, widespread home testing, which allows people to screen themselves and avoid contact with others if they have an infection. With this new home test, people can “swab their nose, run the test and find out their results in as little as 20 minutes,” said FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn.
The test kit includes a small tool to help you to take nasal swab, or sample from inside your nose. Once you swab your nostril(鼻孔) you place the swab onto a small cartridge. This cartridge analyzes the sample and sends the results to an app on your smartphone. The app displays the results and then helps you interpret them. Users can also connect with a health professional through the app.
Ellume’s test works differently than other tests. Most tests look for the genetic material of the virus. This is the material that hakes up its genes, which influence how the virus looks and acts. However, Ellume’s test looks for proteins that the virus sheds(散发). These viral proteins are large molecules that can trigger a response from your immune system, which is the collection of cells and their responses that help the body fight off infections.
Like other COVID-19 tests that look for proteins, Ellume’s test still has a shall chance of errors. FDA officials say that people who get a negative result but still have coronavirus symptoms should follow up with a doctor.
Although the price of the test could prevent some people from using it, Dr. Michael Mina, a professor at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, called the new test “a great addition” to existing options.
12. What is the problem with current testing in the U.S.?
A. It is not efficient enough. B. It leads to poor management.
C. It based on nasal swabs. D. It results in outbreak of virus.
13. What is the right procedure for home testing?
a. analyze the sample
b. send the result to an app
c. take a nasal swab
d. place the swab on a cartridge
e. interpret the result
A. cadbe. B. cdabe. C. dcbae. D. dcabe.
14. What is a negative factor of the new test?
A. It’s unaffordable for some people.
B. It has a great chance of errors.
C. It’s an addition to existing options.
D. It causes people to get infected.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Smartphone apps for analysis.
B. A tool for taking Nasal swab.
C. More options for recovering.
D. Home test for COVID-19.
A 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据文章第二段“Currently, the U.S. is testing nearly 2 million people daily, and most health experts agree the country needs to be testing many more people than that. Most tests still require a nasal swab(鼻拭子) performed by a health professional, followed by processing at a laboratory. That typically means you have to wait days for the test results.(目前,美国每天检测近200万人,大多数健康专家认为,美国需要检测的人要多得多。大多数检测仍然需要由卫生专业人员进行鼻拭子检测,然后在实验室进行处理。这通常意味着你要等几天才能得到测试结果)”可推断,目前的检测方法无法满足检测的人数需求,而且需要很久才能得到检测结果,所以是低效的。故选A。
根据第四段“Once you swab your nostril(鼻孔) you place the swab onto a small cartridge. This cartridge analyzes the sample and sends the results to an app on your smartphone. The app displays the results and then helps you interpret them.(当你用棉签擦拭鼻孔时,把棉签放在一个小墨盒上。这个墨盒分析样本,并将结果发送到您的智能手机上的应用程序。该应用程序显示结果,然后帮助你解释它们)”可知,应先擦拭鼻孔,然后放到墨盒上,墨盒分析样本,把结果发到APP上,最后解读结果。故选B。
14. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Although the price of the test could prevent some people from using it, Dr. Michael Mina, a professor at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, called the new test “a great addition” to existing options.(尽管这种测试的价格可能会使一些人望而却步,但马萨诸塞州剑桥市哈佛大学教授Michael Mina博士称,这种新测试是对现有选择的“一个很好的补充”)”可知,这种测试的弊端就是价格昂贵,有些人负担不起。故选A。
根据文章第一段“A new test for COVID-19 is coming to store shelves throughout the U.S. This is the first test for the disease that you can do at home. It does not need a prescription, or doctor’s approval, to use.(一种新的COVID-19检测方法即将在美国各地的商店上架。这是你可以在家里进行的首个检测方法。它不需要处方或医生的批准就可以使用)”及全文可知,文章主要介绍了一种新的COVID-19检测方法。所以“Home test for COVID-19.(COVID-19家庭检测)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选D。

【答案】Which factor leads to success, talent, struggle or enthusiasm? In my viewpoint, struggle leads to success.
As the old saying goes, no pain, no gain. We will get nothing but only waste our life if we only daydream instead of struggling. Those who are lazy and sloppy to their work will never succeed.
Last year, I was chosen to participate in the sports meeting. Because I’m not good at sport, I felt anxious. I didn’t want to live up to others’ expectations. Through struggling with exercise, I got the third place in race walking.
We should be aware of that we should keep struggling. Only in this way, can we succeed!
