Boys Learn Housework at School
Everyone should play a part in housework and should know how to perform basic life skills. However, in some places, housework is seen as something that only women do, leaving some men unwilling or even unable to do them.
A school is fighting for gender equality(性别平等) with a program that teaches boys and young men basic life skills, including cleaning, cooking, and even sewing(缝补).
However, people hold different opinions on this topic. Let’s have a look at them.
A Elaine | I have two sons and they are both taught that there is no such a thing as an idea that cooking and cleaning are women’s work, and that chores should be done by both genders. | D Niki | Sorry, I see this as something that should be taught at home! My parents taught me all chores at a very young age. Parents need to stop expecting things like this to be taught at school. |
B Debbie | It’s parents’ job to teach their sons and daughters how to use common sense in all aspects of living. By the way, children learn by example. | E Adam | All parents should do this; school is for teaching schoolwork.
|
C Emmy | It shouldn’t have anything to do with gender. It’s called life skills that everyone should have. | F Jani | In Finland, our kids are taught these kinds of skills and that has nothing to do with gender. They’re life skills. |
23. Which of the following housework is NOT mentioned in this article?
A. Cleaning. B. Sewing. C. Washing.
24. Match people’s opinions A-F with the two topics: ①These life skills have nothing to do with gender; ②These skills should be taught at home. Which of the following is right?
A. ①-AC; ②-BDEF B. ①-ACF; ②-BDE. C. ①-BF; ②-ACDE.
25. What’s the school’s main purpose in teaching boys chores?
A. To understand how difficult it is to do housework.
B. To ask boys to do more chores than girls at home.
C. To call on boys to share housework at home.

Many people are trying to learn a new language. Some of them consider it as a hobby, while others have to learn a language because it is required by their jobs or study. As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like learning Chinese.
It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese characters(汉字) to read and understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3,000 characters sounds like an impossible task, for many of the Chinese characters look the same. That’s why some people give up halfway. It’s the most difficult part for me, too. But I manage to learn how to write each character by watching videos online. Whenever I saw a character I didn’t know in the street or on a menu, I would just write it down on my phone and then look it up. Slowly I’ve learned the characters that are common in daily life.
It’s also important to listen to Chinese as much as possible. I downloaded(下载) a lot of listening materials onto my phone and listened to them on the way to school, work and even dates with my friends. I also watched a lot of Chinese TV shows and films, where the words are not so difficult and there are always subtitles(字幕). In this way, I’ve also learned how to express myself like a Chinese.
As for speaking, I practice talking about different topics in Chinese when I am cycling around, effectively talking to myself or in my head, thinking through different conversations and situations. For example, whenever I was going to a shop, I would think how to say that in Chinese. It helps me to think in a Chinese way, which is really important.
Learning a language is never easy. Generally, I just use every tool on hand and take my learning step by step, and I’m still learning new things to this day!
26. Why does the author try to learn Chinese?
A. He wants to get further study in China.
B. He expects to get a good job in China.
C. He hopes to learn about Chinese culture.
27. What does the author think is the most difficult part to learn Chinese?
A. Reading. B. Writing. C. Speaking.
28. How does the author practice speaking?
A. By travelling around China.
B. By watching Chinese movies.
C. By thinking as a Chinese.
29. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. It takes time to learn a language.
B. Chinese isn’t as difficult as you think.
C. It’s a wise decision to learn a language.
30. Where can you read this passage?
A. In a guidebook. B. In a newspaper. C. In a science book.
D
Woodcarving(木雕) is a traditional folk art form in China. Chen Jia, a young woman from Chaozhou, south China’s Guangdong Province, has focused herself on passing down and innovating(创新) Chaozhou woodcarving.
Chen, born in the 1990s, began to learn the craft (工艺) when she was 14 years old under the influence and support of her family.
“I wanted to give up several times during the learning process, as I often hurt myself. It’s also very difficult. My father wanted me to give up woodcarving and find an easier job.” Chen said.
Chen said that she had a strong sense of achievement when her first woodcarving artwork, which took her several months to finish, was sold. “Since I have mastered it, I just keep going.” said the artist.
The step-by-step process for Chaozhou woodcarving is not simple. To finish one woodcarving piece, a woodcarver usually needs more than 30 carving knives and wooden hammers of different sizes.
A common theme for carvings includes different sea animals, such as crabs(螃蟹) and lobsters(龙虾), which are symbols of good harvest(丰收) and show the local culture of Chaozhou, since many Chaozhou people used to work as fishermen.
To make her woodcarving works even more lively, Chen always pays greater attention to the details of daily life, including watching real live crabs and lobsters carefully.
In the past, Chaozhou woodcarvings were mainly used to decorate buildings, including serving as furniture and festival items(物品). However, people living in modern life started to lose interest in it.
To attract young people to better admire the traditional art form, Chen has innovated the themes, shapes and usage of woodcarving. She now carves out small decorative items for daily use, such as combs(梳子), hoping that more and more people will accept the artworks.
31. Why did Chen Jia learn woodcarving craft when she was young?
A. Because her family influenced and supported her in doing it.
B. Because she would like to pass down and innovate it.
C. Because she thought it might be an easy job for her to do.
32. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A strong sense of achievement.
B. Traditional Chaozhou woodcarving.
C. Chen’s first woodcarving artwork.
33. Which of the following words can best describe Chen Jia?
A. Caring and humorous.
B. Honest and helpful.
C. Hard-working and creative.
34. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Chen Jia made a decision to give up woodcarving and find an easy job.
B. Wood carvers need many different carving tools to finish woodcarving works.
C. Chaozhou woodcarvers used to carve out small items for daily use.
35. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain why woodcarving is disappearing now.
B. To tell us how important woodcarving is in our life.
C. To introduce an excellent woman woodcarver in China.

It might be many people’s first time hearing Chinese paddlefish(白鲟), and they probably have never seen them swimming in the Yangtze River with their own eyes. Chinese paddlefish have lived for more than 150 million years, sharing the same sky with dinosaurs. But it disappeared in 2022.
Chinese paddlefish, often known as “king of freshwater fish” in China, could weigh as heavy as 500 kilograms and an adult fish could grow to 7 to 8 meters long. It had a long, silver-gray body and a very large mouth. With poorly developed eyes, the fish used its long, sword-like nose to sense electrical activity to find food.
The decline(减少) of Chinese paddlefish has been caused by human activities. These giants were once commonly seen and caught not only in the Yangtze but also other rivers in China. Their huge size made them a popular target for fishermen and a welcome dish to dinner tables. Overfishing(过度捕捞) caused their populations to decline sharply in the latter(后期的) half of the 20th century.
In 2003, an adult Chinese paddlefish accidentally appeared near Yibin, in south-central China. Scientists hoped to follow its movements, but within hours all signals(信号) were lost. It turned out to be the last of the species(物种) ever seen alive.
The sad news of Chinese paddlefish’s extinction(灭绝) spread quickly online. One said, “I have never met you before. The moment I do, it’s goodbye forever.”
41. How long have Chinese paddlefish lived?
42. How did paddlefish find food?
43. Why did paddlefish decline sharply in the latter half of the 20th century?
