One day, I went to the store to pick up the next week’s food. I had something important to do so I had little time and I had to put off shopping for Christmas presents until later in the month.

When we arrived there, I gave my son a dollar and asked him to give it to a poor man at the door of the store. We went in and soon filled our cart(购物车) with food. Then we walked towards the self-checkout machines(自主结账收款机). I hated using them. I preferred to chat with the friendly cashiers(收银员), but there were too many people waiting there. As I stopped and waited, though, I heard a man at the machine next to mine saying something angrily. Every time he put his old, wrinkled(起皱褶的) twenty-dollar bill into the machine, it spit out the bill. I quickly took a newer twenty-dollar bill out of my wallet and gave it to him. He thanked me with a warm smile and paid for his goods. I told him to keep his money but he insisted(坚持) that I should take his old, wrinkled twenty-dollar bill. I nodded, put it in my coat pocket, and wished him a Merry Christmas.

After checking out, I remembered the saying, “Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you.” I reached into my pocket, smiled, and went outside. Then I gave that wrinkled twenty-dollar bill to another poor person and walked to my car happily.

It’s no surprise that hard physical work(体力工作) makes you tired, but what about hard mental work(脑力工作)? Sitting and thinking hard for hours makes one feel tired, too. Now, scientists have new findings to help us know why this is. And according to their studies, that you feel mentally tired because of thinking hard isn’t just a feeling. It may have something to do with our brain(大脑).

Studies show that when you work hard with your brain for several hours, some toxic chemicals(有毒物质) in your brain can affect(影响) your mind when you make decisions. At this time, you are more likely to make wrong decisions because of tiredness. So when their brains work for a long time, people feel like doing easy and simple actions without thinking too much.

“Some studies show that tiredness is a kind of feeling cooked up by the brain to make us stop what we are doing and do a more relaxing activity,” says Mathias Pessiglione of Pitié-Salpêtrière University in Paris, France. “But our findings show that mental work leads to more toxic chemicals, so tiredness is truly a symbol. It tells us to stop your brain for its better working.”

We all know robots can work without stop, but the brain can’t. The scientists really want to know why. So they did more studies on two groups of people: those who needed to think hard and those who had easier mental work. And they found people who think hard are easier to get tired. They even make more wrong decisions when they’re tired.

So, is there any way to help our brain think more clearly and work better? “I would keep my good old habits: rest and sleep! They are the best for almost everyone. The studies show that toxic chemicals get less and less during sleep,” Pessiglione said.

In future studies, they hope to learn why tiredness can affect the brain so easily. They also want to learn if it has something to do with other illnesses in brain.

Hou Changliang, 36, was a volunteer(志愿者) teacher from Hunan. In 2011, Hou took part in a volunteer program. He then taught in rural(乡村的) schools in Guangxi, Guizhou and Yunnan for 11 years.

Starting from 2018, Hou posted pictures of his everyday life with students on Douyin. The videos have got more than 7.3 million likes. Now, his story has made national headlines, reported China Daily.

What’s the most important thing to help develop rural education? With first-hand experience, Hou would say it’s not buying new books or desks, but a change of mindset(观念).

For example, for two years, he had to fight the drop-out rate(辍学率) of his students in Guangxi, reported CGTN. People there often didn’t know the importance of their children’s education, especially the education of girls.

Hou also encouraged rural students to understand and love their hometown. “Only in this way will they care about its future and that of its people,” he said.

He told China Daily he could feel his students’ interest in city life. They once asked him what amusement parks and subways were. He then found that textbooks are sometimes mainly about city life but seldom about rural life. “As rural students look up to the city life shown in textbooks, they may just want to go away from home,” he said.

So he sometimes used pictures of rural life in his teaching. He also turned farming work such as planting vegetables into topics for writing tasks and math problems. He wanted the young people to feel proud of their villages.
