The grup at Skipping Rcks Lab has made a water bttle yu can eat. The prduct is called Oh. Unlike plastic bttles, Ohs are neither tall nr hard. They lk mre like bubbles, r small, rund, clear balls. They can hld liquid inside. Peple wh drink Ohs can be surprised: the utside bursts in the muth.
Rdrig Garcia Gnzalez is with Skipping Rcks Lab. He explains that the utside, r the membrane, f Oh is made f seaweed, a plant that grws in the cean. “It’s a membrane made f seaweed that can cntain water r any kind f liquid. It’s made frm an extract (汁) f the brwn seaweed.”
The Oh membrane is tasteless, and yu can eat it. The cmpany says even if yu thrw away the membrane, it will break dwn in abut fur weeks. Gnzalez says the membrane is strng, and gd fr the envirnment.
Every year, billins f plastic water bttles are thrwn away, plluting land and waterways arund the wrld. The typical water bttle made f plastic can take hundreds f years t degrade.
Lise Hnsinger is als with Skipping Rcks Lab. “Mst peple just grab a bttle f water, hld it fr five minutes, drink it, and thrw it away. Hw can that then exist fr 700 years? S, yeah, this is abslutely a slutin t that. We are very purist: we dn’t want t see this packaged in plastic.”
There are limits t the Oh. It cannt be refilled. Each bttle is small. And Ohs d nt stre fr mre than a few days. The Skipping Rcks Lab is wrking n thse issues. “We’re still wrking n things like extending the shelf life, lking at different ptins in terms f thickness, if we want t make ne that stands up mre, r mre flexible fr marathns where peple just want t eat it whle.”
