The negative health impacts f plastic n bth wildlife and humans have been well dcumented. Recycling cntributes t settling the prblem. Hwever, the material cming frm the plastic recycled using the traditinal technlgy is f lwer quality and can nly be used a few times fr items like clthing r carpets befre it has t be thrwn away.
Nw, French start-up Carbis wants t help alleviate the wrld’s plastic pllutin with a bacterial enzyme (细菌酶) that “eats” PET—the mst plentiful plastic used t prduce packaging and plastic bttles. The enzyme is able t dwngrade 90% f a tn f plastic in less than 10 hurs. And the resulting material can be used t create anything and, mre imprtantly, can be cntinuusly recycled.
T break dwn the plastic, the waste is placed in a reactr with water and the enzyme and heated fr 16 hurs at 65℃. The resulting mix is then filtered (过滤) and purified (净化). This allws fr the recvery f the building blcks that make up PET. These building blcks are then remade int new plastic and transfrmed int bttles and ther items, withut having t use mre resurces.
