As a child, visiting the z was mre a punishment than a treat. I didn’t find the chimps’ tea parties funny, nr the bird shws entertaining. Feeding time fr seals was less painful, but their perfrmances still seemed like they belnged mre in a circus.
And I hated circuses, especially the animal acts — men teasing lins, girls balancing n elephants and mnkeys playing ftball. I knew that every trick a circus animal did was unnatural, achieved thrugh strict training and quite pssibly cruelty.
Happily, during my lifetime public attitudes and the law have changed. Circuses using wild animals are nw almst extinct, and zs have definitely evlved.
When my children were yung, I ccasinally tk them t ur lcal z. The elephants were in tiny cages and the grillas lked bred as they sat peeling bananas and staring at teasing visitrs. Each cage had a sign which listed the animal’s name and where it came frm. But, back then, there was little infrmatin included abut the envirnmental challenges they faced.
As a result, envirnmentalists and animal lvers ften ppse zs. “Animals belng in the wild,” is a cmmn — and understandable — cmplaint. But what d the animals themselves prefer?
Generally speaking, z animals have a lnger life. But — yu may prtest — they are nt free. What? Free t be hunted and killed, free t die f hunger r thirst? Maybe sitting in a cage eating bananas isn’t s bad.
Nt that such cnditins are acceptable in mdern zs, due t the wrk f BIAZA, the British and Irish Assciatin f Zs and Aquariums. These days every z requires BIAZA’s apprval t perate, and the assciatin sets the standards, bserves cnditins in zs and develps animal-research prgrammes, bth in the UK and abrad. BIAZA als rganizes the animal exchanges between zs all ver the wrld.
Cnsequently, tday, mst z animals are brn and raised in zs, live in large, cmfrtable enclsures and are cared fr by well-trained, knwledgeable and caring z emplyees. Of curse it’s n substitute fr living in the wild but unfrtunately this isn’t always pssible. Meanwhile, why nt visit yur lcal z and decide fr yurself?
]4. Frm Paragraph 2, we can guess that the writer believes circus animals__________.
A. shuld have been placed in zs
B. were nt treated well by their trainers
C. were nt as intelligent as thse in zs
D. had much shrter lives than thse in the wild
5. Which f the fllwing statements abut zs wuld the writer prbably agree with?
A. Z animals shuld be freed int the wild.
B. Zs are mre ppular nw than in the past.
C. Z animals are mre restricted than in the past
D Zs nw prvide caring living cnditins fr animals.
6. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Zs Are Imprving B. Zs r Circuses?
C. Clsing Dwn Circuses D. Life f Animals

Thrughut histry, music spread amng peple f different cultures. In tday’s technlgical advanced sciety, hwever, peple spread music nline, smetimes withut an artist’s permissin. Peple wh find music fr free nline are nt paying fr CDs r every MP3 dwnladed. T truly understand the influence f music piracy (盗版行为) n creatrs, ne must understand hw many peple are invlved in the recrding prcess. Fr the sale f each album, prfits must be shared between musicians, sund engineers, music prducers, managers, advertisers, and the cmpany selling the prduct. Many peple believe sharing music nly affects the recrding artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business fr all cmpanies invlved.
There are many peple wh dn’t see the harm in sharing music nline and even think they have the right t d it. One nline blgger states that he riginally paid fr an entire CD and that he shuld be able t d with the material whatever he wants. Hwever, internet piracy wuld prevent musicians frm cntinuing prducing albums fr fear f theft. Therefre, if peple want t cntinue listening t their favrite artists, they need t buy their music s that artists will make enugh prfit t cntinue their music careers.
